Portugal: First to arrive, last to leave
True from its African colonies, which were impossible to hold. Madeira had no inhabitants when colonized, so yes, it is part of Africa, but (like the Azores) an autonomous part of Portugal rather than an occupied territory.
Always.
The spanish Sahara was the last, unless you count the island in the west coast.

Sorry for the misspelling of Egypt.
It's not "Egytp", but Egypt.
We (France) still have Mayotte & Réunion (as well as a few lesser islands) between Africa & Madagascar.
But very nice video. Turns out, I myself always had a vision in mind of the colonization era of africa as a period way longer in time but for most of it it was only just bits here and there on the cost lines.

@Oricand yeh but one country Mongolia but only in Asia not all over world like British Spanish and hittler is European too man
Oricand you should be also proud of the mass immigration that your stupid ancestors caused
Yggdrasil yes, into the most depraved hands and form of slavery these ever existed. It was beyond their imaginings. The slavery as practiced by Africans was not chattel slavery. European slavery was crass, vile, and violent on a level never seen before in the history of the world. Africans has no context for that level of brutality and we’re unaware of how sadistic their trade partners were by nature. Their version of slavery was different. It operated much like the European feudal system, but without all of the incest and sharing of their wives with the men of higher status, which was common practice with Europeans.
@Oricand You my friend are piece of shit.
The iberians started it, the iberians haven't quite ended it.

Great video, but there are some omissions about Portugal:
-You forgot the Portuguese archipelagos of Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe;
-You also forgot Portuguese Congo (today Cabinda enclave, in Angola) on the north bank of the river Congo mouth;
-Although the French Conquest of Dahomey includes the city of Ajudá (Ouidah), the Fort of São João Batista was a Portuguese sovereign territory until 1961, when the garrison of the fort burned it after they were expelled by the Army of Benin.
But was an amazing work anyways, congratulations👍
Glad you mentioned São João Batista--listed under Ouidah in Wikipedia. In 1961 it was the world's smallest colony (population 5). I'm not sure it was burned, as the article says the residents "tried to", and now the fort is a museum. An interesting story.

Sao Joao Batista was once included in the Guinness Book as the smallest polity in the world

3:04 "Free State"
I would raise a hand in objection but I don't have any.Avarage Congolese during those times.
That's a technical name, the Free State of Congo wasn't even part of the Belgian empire, it was the personal territory of the Belgian king. He sent his private army to rule it and exploit it. Some American journalists decided to explore it and discovered the barbarity, as a result the Belgian Parliament eventually forcefully took the territory into official rule by the Belgian government, ending the free state. Sadly the Belgian King died peacefully instead having to be held accountable for his crimes.
:V
AnOriginalName
How would he ever be held accountable...
In his defence they gave him that territory so everyone (rich investors) could exploit it (instead of a onestate colony). Free state could not tax so it was very unprofitable for Leo II hence all the economic coercion.

Fun fact:
The fall of Dien Bien Phu (Vietnam) in 1954 marked the end of French worldwide colonial empire. Two years later in 1956, Tunisia and Morocco (3:25) obtained independence, after which France became bogged down in the Algerian campaign, sounding the death knell for a French colonial army forced to call on conscripts.
you know, aside from algeria, the french population really had no interest in the colony, they were becoming a burden economically and all they did was make france look bigger.the people wanted to focus on ww2 reparation and that's part of the reason why france lost its empire.
same thing for algeria exept the french population wanted to keep it so they had to call a historical figure in order to release it.
if the french wanted it they could have easily kept their colony until the late 1900 but they would have fallen behind economically
@@firecreeper2249 No, if they would have want to kept their colony the couldn't because the algerian population was forming the army and would have kick the ass of France out of Algeria quickly. The algerian population was 10 millions against 1 million and also french population feared and quitted. They algerians had many losses but they were stronger.
@@akbeh the algerians were in no way stronger, militias are NEVER stronger than great powers, idk how you got that idea, like maybe you're gonna give me the example of the algerian winning one battle with hard odds, but winning battles don't make you win wars.
If France wanted they could have easily starved the population and made examples so resistants lose public support and supplies, france didn't do that because algeria was deemed too much trouble for what it's worth(which we might argue was somewhat wrong since france with algeria's population and ressources would be much more important)
maybe I'm wrong since I don't know much about the algerian independance war, but so far ,looking on my own and asking algerian, it seems the fln was just a big militia that didn't hold any territories bigger than a village,
if you have proof of the opposite, please share them, I'd like to know more about this conflict
@@firecreeper2249 At the end of War, it wasn't the FLN fighting more but the population was insurging, with 11 December 1960 manifestation. And population was already starving and the more they suffer, the more they fight the colonial power. 1 Million and half algerians died in War. The Algerian nation had a great history and it's culture was middle-eastern with islamic relgion, so the population don't accept to be ruled by Europeans. It's more a question of dignity than starvation. Just see the Japanese patriotism (in WWII), so it's same for Algeria. Morroco and Tunisia weren't patriotic as Algeria so they didn't fight too much. Also, Algeria is a country that made one of greatest wars of Revolution in History. The strategy of FLN was to hide in cities and mountains and to make guerrillos attacks, so they won't say : " hello everybody I hold a town" because they will be attacked. I suggest you to see the films : The Battle of Algiers and Algerian war films (like Mostefa BenBoulaïd, opium and stick, patrol in east, Lotfi, etc.)
@@akbeh Would you happen to have sources other than films? I'd like to believe you but there's a chance what you're telling me is romanticised, in comparison, I'd get similar comment about the french resistance during ww2 while in reality they didn't do much. It's not that I don't trust you or that I'm anti algerian, it's just that I'd like to be sure to have a non biased understanding
Though (in case it's not clear)I did appreciate that you took the time to write that much, thank you for that

Very important and overlooked historical information. Bravo. A major factor in the current mass migration from poorer countries in Africa and other parts of the globe to richer countries in Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand. The richer countries didn't get rich automatically!
No countries get rich automatically, European culture ensured that Europe was prosperous long before Africa was colonized. Just as it ensured that America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia become prosperous once Europeans established themselves.
@@oisinoc It's called accumulation of raw resources! That's why invading and colonizing countries get rich, even today! Europe was in the dark ages for centuries! With the development of better ships, firearms, and industrialization, able to dominate the globe past five hundred years, using white skin color as an excuse!
@@raminkhajavi9513 So Africans had access to Africa's enormous resources for millennia but could not get rich from them? Interesting. Who developed these better ships and industrialization? Europeans. Europe's prosperity was its people, everything else came from that. :)
@@oisinoc yes africa had rich civilizations before european colonizers. Not just accumulation of raw resources (invasions), but also cheap labour (slavery) is how empires got rich. That's how Europe "prospered and everything else came from that" past five hundred years. Science, knowledge, and technology is not just a european innovation, but traverses throughout time and region. For example, the chariot 2500bce central asia. The arab Muslim empire also contributed tremendously to civilization as we know it, and transferred much knowledge to Europe. Yes, european people innovators also, but in order for empires to gain wealth, it's called invasions, colonization of others for cheap surplus labor and resources. Just like today! Most of the resources and products of cheap labour ends up in "first world" countries, which export weapons and bombs, to b dropped elsewhere.
@@oisinoc according to one of my fave lecturer scholars pre computer days, Joseph Campbell, said, wars of attrition, mass subjugation of others, slavery, began with first empires, when men started making temples for themselves and calling themselves king of kings, around 2500 bce mesopotamia. But egyptian empire was started even earlier! Then it just went from empire to empire! European world dominance for past 500 years. A good example of difference of cultural mindset is when Columbus landed, "the natives are so friendly, nice, and hospitable. They bear many gifts. They will make good slaves."

Africa will be a united superpower in 50 years, mark my words.
Highly unlikely considering the closest any native 'African' empire has gotten to controlling the entire continent are 3 major groups. In East 'Africa', twice; Aksum & the Ethiopia. In West 'Africa' thrice. Almohad (Algeria/Morocco),Songhai, & Mali. In the north by Egypt three times. Fatimid, Ayyubid, & Mamluk. In the east they never went past 1.3 million km^2. The west at most they reached was about 2.3 million km^2(1.4 for Songhai & 1.1 for Mali). The north between 2 and 4.1 million km^2. Other than these no other native 'African' kingdom and or Empire has went past the one million km^2 mark. The other closest one was the Kongo Empire about 780K km^2 if I remember correctly. Making it possibly the 9th largest native empire. So what most likely is going to happen in the next 5 decades to 1 century is that 'Africa' will steadily normalize back to its historical size of its nations. Making it likely that Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, Mali, & Ethiopia will change the least in territorial size. While the others will split into several different countries.
