All politicians who state this are wrong. European super-powers are responsable, from the 15th century onwards, for worldwide corruption, injustice and competition. European problems have caused worldwide earthquakes including WW2 and somehow until our days, the european developed countries cause various problems all over the world. So its hazardous to speak about european values. If we want to build Europe upon such ideas, failure is certain. How can so many intelligent europeans be convinced that our "common values" will "make the world a better place?" As we try to build it up starting with wrong premises. The EU is a union of many different languages and societes. Everyone having his own peculiar character. This explains the arising of populistic parties and ideas. People all over europe dont want to loose their identity. They are afraid of instituions that are trying to reign over their heads. My thought instead is that we should build up and strenghten the singularity and the unique brands that many european countries undoubtly are. Europeans identify themselves with their language, their country and their regions. Each having reached incredible skills and fame around the world as unique brands that cant be copied. And the places where europeans have emigrated during the centuries, they are not like us anymore. they have developed new societes with new rules, skills and forms of living. We should not try to proselytize the world any more, as we made a lot of damage in many places, and are still doing it. why cant we accept, that other countries are doing better than us? At least they try to do so. Shouldn t we seek for cooperation with other economies and countries, instead of trying to compete with them? Europe has alway been at the crossroads. Everything is on the move. As it has always been. What we need is not blaming each other for what occurs being natural processes of societies. It happens in England now. The great continental powers have alway been a threat to England. England has always been a threat to Ireland and Scotland. We should comprehend and accept what is going on in the UK instead. And not obstruct their social and political processes.
