Are you wondering what it costs to live in an RV full time for a year? With so many new RVers and people considering the RV lifestyle, we wanted to share our full-time RV living costs for 2020, to help people budget for when they hit the road. The RV lifestyle is extremely variable so you will find numbers much higher and much lower than ours. We think our numbers land at a good average for someone who wants to spend money on experiences but have a good amount of boondocking mixed in.

Seriously, great video Rae and Jason. It's nice to see others taking their finances seriously, you both are doing it right 👍🏼Agree with you both about holding off on a washer/dryer as well. I'm sure that extra weight would be adding more expenses to the fuel budget. Nicely done!

I talked to a body shop who fixed my Toyota Prius which got rear-ended by a Ford Expedition SUV, and asked the manager which insurance company is best to deal with. He said State Farm, USAA, AAA, Allstate. And the worse? Farmer Insurance and other cheap companies. They nickel and dime you to death.
One advice I would give you is you don't need collision coverage. Drive defensively and save for emergency fix if it's your fault in an accident.
I have not bought collision coverage for over 20 years on all my new vehicles. I just let people tailgate me and rear-end me.

Also, keep in mind where you shop too. Costco is great for those one or two items that you do use in bulk, but if you do regular grocery shopping at Costco, it is going to be very expensive compared to other chains that may be cheaper like Trader Joes, Aldi and Walmart. Also HOW you eat as well. Convenience foods will be more expensive than making from scratch and having a "quickie meal" less expensive than a full sit down dinner every night. So again, it is like RVing - it is variable based on how you do the "lifestyle". But it is the one expense you have absolute control over. You can save or splurge how you wish!

    • @jacklong7048

      When is a permit needed?
Price v. Barr had no impact on how the National Park Service regulates still photography, so there are no changes in how the National Park Service regulates that activity. Still photographers require a permit only when:
the activity takes place at location(s) where or when members of the public are generally not allowed; or
the activity uses model(s), sets(s), or prop(s) that are not a part of the location's natural or cultural resources or administrative facilities; or
a park would incur additional administrative costs to monitor the activity.

Nice couple, really down-to-earth! Although I have not RV'd yet, I have been watching multiple RVers on RUclips including you guys, and accounted for as many monthly expenses in MS Excel, so far I coming up to over $2,800 per month and nearly $34,000 per year. Of course, this is an estimate and subject to change. This is still probably much cheaper than living in Los Angeles and commuting to an office, I presume.

You could also show your spreadsheet budget that you prepared at the start of the year and alongside the actual expense you incurred. Show any graphs as well. Certainly not a criticism, you did a great job.

Have you tried GEICO (and underwriters)? We were State Farm for both vehicles and house for YEARS. They didn't seem to want to fool with adding our trailer, so we shopped.
ALL IN, we have both vehicles and the trailer insured for LESS than HALF what State Farm was charging us for just the two vehicles. And our Homeowners went way down too!
And this was for an apples to apples comparison.... same coverages and same deductibles.
We aren't fulltimers, but GEICO DID tell me they could write us for fulltime if we ever decided to go that route. We ARE Louisiana residents, but GEICO writes in Texas, too.
We got an additional discount for me being a Phi Delta Theta alumni (lots of Fraternity/sorority discounts), plus other stuff...

We are not full-timers but are out 1x a month for 4-7 days; + a 6-8 week snowbird trip and several 7-10 day in the Summer. We do not RV to "save $$" though. We like to boondock ~70% of the time. We like sightseeing & "experiences". Agree about your Insurance & laundry statements. I do wonder how you averaged $17+ per night in private & state campgrounds? Ours is about double that. Thanks again for your video. We are trying to figure out the budget things right now.
Question about your insurance - do you carry additional insurance for a business and is that included with the listed truck / RV insurance costs?
Also, I have another comment for the 3540GK walkthrough video from a couple weeks ago. We saw what we think would be a "lower cost" solution for the front closet and easy access to the washer / dryer. A review of the Heritage Glen 286RL was posted on RUclips recently. That rig has large barn door type sliding doors that span the full width of the front of the rig. That retains most of the overall design of the front closet and allows for easy access to the washer and dryer. We would appreciate it if you would pass this along to your contacts at Grand Design.

Why would/should anybody care what you spend money on or don't spend money on. It is your money. I would blame lockdown for peoples mood. But these people have probably always been critical of those doing what they want of do regardless of cost.

I watch a lot of these videos of full timers. The question that always comes to mind is what do people do for a living to afford this lifestyle. I notice this information is never given. I understand the retired couples out on the road but young couples like this I always wonder how they do it.

It varies amongst everyone. Some people blog fulltime, some work remotely for companies, some do customer service type jobs remotely, we've met people who are in sales and work remotely. There are alot of companies that allow remote work, and even moreso now.
