Shy isn't necessary. Creative curve adjustment works and over exposed backgrounds can work, but I prefer darker backgrounds and brighter subjects. I admit that you had a lot to overcome here. I like the back lighting and long shadows. Also, I agree with why it works. A "voice operated reflector" would have been a help. And, I am a contrarian when it comes to rules. And I haven't shot a wedding in 50+ years.
Hey Katelyn, do you have any advice for how to best edit green skin tones if you've captured a worthwhile photo, but realize the mistake you've made once it's too late?
Was this video shot with your R6? Do you use a filter on the lens? Your videos seem to have a softer look than others on RUclips. Thanks for all of the info that you share!
Nope! This was shot with the Canon C70 and Canon 35mm T1.5 CN-E lens. I think the cine lens/C70 combo are a little less "digitally" sharp compared to the cameras most RUclipsrs use. -Ty
Really nice shot, thanks for sharing! I am not sure what your exact definition is for secondary light, but why can’t you consider the light reflective patch on the ground also as secondary light? That way you’re not breaking any rule, just adding another source of secondary light! The clickbait got me allright 😉. Thanks for your great work!!
I mean it could be…. But normally, saying that little patch could be used as secondary light in education would reallly confuse people. It seemed insignificant and his jacket was impactful too so it wasn’t truly the stone.
You might want to try HDR so you don't have blown out highlights. I saw a video from Nick Page he did a HDR portrait but it does not look HDR. I think the Canon R6 should have built in HDR. I know my Olympus has built in HDR I can set it to three or five photos. Lightroom is good for working with HDR but not getting that ugly HDR look. I would test first also try with the electric shutter should be best.
I've done the HDR trick in GIMP to salvage a shot. I just adjust duplicates of the image in Darktable first and set an overall under and over exposure then bring them all into GIMP. Crazy how nice the image can end up. That said, if the right side of the range is really over exposed in the first place, getting any details back in the extreme highlights is likely not happening since they weren't recorded in the first place.
1) She WANTS “blown out highlights.” It's called “light and airy” and is the style that completely defines the entire wedding photography industry. In this particular photo she simply means the background is just a bit brighter than she typically wants stylistically. 2) “HDR” involving multiple photos only works with subject matter that is completely still which is why it is never ever ever used with photographing people and why the dynamic range of a camera is so crucial. 3) Katelyn is an educator with endless experience as a professional wedding photographer charging ten grand per wedding. She is not asking for the advice of nameless/faceless RUclips commenters. If you don't think she knows what she's doing, don't watch her videos.
Adore your honesty which is a great help to all of us!
Thanks for watching!
That was awesome!! I love that about photography that sometimes we can break the rules and get great results!
We need a composition course, Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Haha, someday!!!
Gorgeous gorgeous shot!! I think you were right that his white jacket helped too ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!!
I always use a fill light. You can control your background light and it would add depth to your overall image.
Where do you get that from? How much does it cost?
Thanks for watching!
Stellar information and teaching as always, thank you Katelyn. xxx
Thanks so much! and Thanks for watching!
I also really love that shadow.
Thanks for watching!
Nice shot! Great video as always.
Thanks so much!
@@KatelynJames keep them coming!
try using off camera flash so you can proper expose the background and the subject
That is not my style but thanks for watching!
Good lesson.
Glad you enjoyed it
My first thought was the left side of gate needed to be closed! Avoid distraction on pic .
Thanks for watching!
Hey Katelyn thanks for share. And yes, sometimes brake the rules work!!!! God bless you
Yes it does!
If you don't have secondary light, can you use a reflector? Would that help?
The picture came out so pretty though!!!
Thank you!!
why did you not photograph from the opposite direction? Too much harsh light would be hitting their skin?
It was ugly.
So you did have secondary light but it was just unusual secondary light! :)
Hey, I got it right! Yay me lol. And yes I've taken your course!
Excellent!

@@longliveclassicmusic I know about the blown out look. But there is a way to shoot this kind of photo with more dynamic range.
That light was VERY HARSH!
I know!!
