If everything were taught this way, we would not have a broken device within miles of our home. You are excellent at teaching because you are precise and you explain the dynamic hurdles that come up with all restoration. Thank you for your instruction. You do it very well and you help all of us.
Nice machine. I just worked on a 1954 Remington Portable tabless (called the SilentRiter in the USA) and the segment needed so much flushing! I don't use compressed air so I was a matter of flush and brush, dry, test, repeat - must have done it 7 times before the outer keys came good. As always, its a pleasure to see how the professionals do things - as an amateur typewriter restorer I am in awe and full of gratitude for your willingness to share these skills. I will look for that second pivot when flushing segments in future.
Just followed The instructions to repair my Olympia SM3 carriage hang up. It worked a treat! As.well the misaligned caps back where they belong. Thanks Dwayne!
how we doing with oil that services hair clippers? Or sew machine oil? Or even the oil for air tools like impact drivers. How’s bicycle chain lube? From my experience, WD40 does a champ job but it’s sorta’ good at dirt collecting.
Hi Phoenix Typewriter, I bought exactly the same typewriter, but i can’t solve 1 issue. When typing it stops exactly in the middle of a line. Pressing the shift key is a work around. Do you know the solution?
Actually learned that the hard way on Smith Coronas long time ago, the LT is so strong you have to take precautions. LT, simple green, red oil is all I need...... but do like the MG401 spray too.
If I taped off some cool parts (big up on the tape trick) can i drop mine in an electrolysis bath is and do some diligent oil maintenance when the rust has left the whole damn thing?
Just a note: sometimes this sort of flush isn't enough. If the dirt is really, really in there sometimes you need to tear down and rebuild the segment. You always, always try this first though. Rebuilding the segment takes hours and this was 15 minutes.
What was the full name of that 'control cleaner for electronics 'you showed VERY briefly with your thumb over part of the label??? "Nu-Tro..." something...
What type of oil did you use to splash the keys and the top parts of the machine before starting cleaning the segment? Great video, once again! Thank you for all your videos.
So I have an SM3 and some alcohol got behind the card guide while cleaning, and the white hash marks are all smudgy. Is there a way to separate the clear plastic to clean the ruler hash marks?
Hi Duane, I'm having a tough time with the ribbon dragging on my SM3. The ribbon advances fine, but it seems to drag across the paper and puts streaks underneath typewritten lines. Have you ever seen this?
Seen this all too much, not only with sm-3's but others too. These heavy inked ribbons are the worst, I have a theory that ribbons back in the era were stiffer and didn't curve as much when going thru the vibrator, when I look closely you can see the ribbon has a natural curve when passing thru the guide, rubbing the paper. You can try forming the vibrator arm further away from platen, but this has it's limitations, I was even trying to form arms flatter to try to off set the natural curve. I even have tried to put tension on the free spool to keep ribbon tighter to try to flatten it as it passes thru, this was not noticeable effective, so I don't have a sure fire successful answer.
Hello, my brother just got me a SM3, I’ll receive it in a few days and I want to restore it, what I know is that the keys work fine, but the carrier doesn’t move to right or left, can that be repaired? Thanks, your videos are excellent.
Duane, I notice that you often, when testing a typewriter, type on it with no paper in the platen. I was always told to avoid this at all costs as it could damage the platen by leaving imprints of the type in it. What say you about this?
Yes possibly, but really no harm no foul. Worst would be the ink on the roller. Usually when I'm typing without paper is during the servicing, and usually using a very light touch
What is the liquid you're using? I can't tell because of your lisp but it sounds like you're saying Lacquer Thinner? Is there a specific type you recommend? First time typewriter owner, but beginning enthusiast. I have this model as well. Keys don't stick as much as this one haha but I am glad to know how to fix it, should the problem arise
Yes, Lacquer Thinner is one of the strongest chemicals you can use, be careful with this stuff It's available at all hardware stores or departments, but I use automotive paint grade PPG from paint suppliers
I'm your 200th 👍. Smith Corona Electric 120 project, operation Lazarus, (lol) Update. So, I got a late start, so late in fact I decided to just wait until Friday. Taking pills and once, oh about 2 hours have pased, that's about when everything I take, lol my trail mix as I like to call it, a smattering of constant diet of pills. Then I should be able to get going on operation code name Lazarus. Part 2 today. Also, still catching up, I'm about 50% taking my time as I want to learn. But had a hard time sleeping last night so, I watched Typewriter repairs. Your job oddly makes me feel comfortable. Another reason for a thank you! You don't have to do these, but you do, you are helping people like me who don't have a nearby Typewriter Repair shop. Again thank you.

Ah! The tip to get the card guide out is helpful! Was wondering about that. Thanks Duane!

Hi Phoenix Typewriter, I bought exactly the same typewriter, but i can’t solve 1 issue. When typing it stops exactly in the middle of a line. Pressing the shift key is a work around. Do you know the solution?
Nice tip to cover the De Luxe logo with tape. Not sure I would have thought of that.
Actually learned that the hard way on Smith Coronas long time ago, the LT is so strong you have to take precautions.

That natural orange cleaner is rad for bearings.
Just a note: sometimes this sort of flush isn't enough. If the dirt is really, really in there sometimes you need to tear down and rebuild the segment. You always, always try this first though. Rebuilding the segment takes hours and this was 15 minutes.
I have this exact same typewriter and need to change the ribbon. Anyone know if there's a particular kind of ribbon I need?
I have those @ Phoenixtypewriter.com

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 thank you!
WD40

I believe that is riveted together, so no. But if you were very very skilled you could cut/drill out rivets & remount somehow.....

What productS do you use to clean?
Primarily lacquer thinner & simple green

Sure, unless typewriter was dropped in shipping, most everything is repairable
carriage lock button - silver tab upper left of keyboard

What kind of LT is this? Is it something that can be bought at the hardware store?
Homedepo or walmart carry a generic LT
I use PPG brand from the automotive paint supplier, seems slightly stronger than the others
What brand of screwdrivers do you use?
Anything high quality, proto, jensen, craftsman. Last pair I got were Arrowmax, still good after a couple year of hard use.
I'm your 200th 👍.
