  • Official Reggae History Live: Lloyd Coxsone - Exclusive Interview UNCUT
Lloyd Blackwood better known as Sir Lloyd Coxsone is an influential figure in the growth of the UK reggae scene, Lloyd Coxsone left his home in Morant Bay, Jamaica, and arrived in the UK in 1962, settling in south-west London and set up his first sound system, Lloyd The Matador. This venture floundered due to inexperience and Coxsone joined the UK-based Duke Reid sound, but he eventually left in 1969, taking some of that operation’s personnel with him. He went on to form his own sound system, adopting the name of the biggest sound in Jamaica at the time, and also, pointedly, the main rival to Jamaica’s Duke Reid, Sir Coxsone. The coxsone sound soon gained a strong following that eventually led to his residency at the famous London nightclub the Roaring Twenties, in Carnaby Street. Throughout the 70s Sir Coxsone Sound’s success lay with maintaining the sound to rigorous standards, playing the most exclusive dub plates direct from Jamaica, and keeping abreast of trends within the music. Rather than specializing in one particular style, Coxsone Sound offered music for all tastes.
Coxsone, like other sound men, also expanded into the record business, licensing music from Jamaica at first, then trying his hand at his own productions using local UK artists. In 1975 he enjoyed huge success, and kickstarted the UK lovers rock phenomenon in the process, with his production of ‘Caught You In A Lie’ - originally a US soul hit by Robert Parker - featuring the vocal talents of 14-year-old south London schoolgirl Louisa Mark. That same year he issued one of the best dub albums of the era, King Of The Dub Rock, which featured dubwise versions of his own productions and those of Gussie Clarke, mixed in part at King Tubby’s. Other notable records appeared on his Tribesman and Lloyd Coxsone Outernational labels and elsewhere during the late 70s and early 80s, including Fabian’s Jack Ruby -produced ‘Prophecy’, ‘Love And Only Love’ and ‘Voice Of The Poor’ by Fred Locks. Others included ‘Stormy Night’ and ‘Homeward Bound’ by the Creation Steppers, a version of the Commodores’ ‘Easy’ by Jimmy Lindsay (many of which are available on 12 The Hard Way) and many more. During the mid-80s Coxsone handed control of his sound over to the younger elements in his team, notably Blacker Dread, and a new breed of DJs. Blacker released his own productions by the likes of Fred Locks, Frankie Paul, Mikey General, Sugar Minott, Michael Palmer, Don Carlos, Earl Sixteen and Coxsone DJ, Jah Screechy. Recently, as interest in the roots music of the 70s has increased, Coxsone has emerged from his semi-retirement to stand again at the controls of his sound.

Big up Sir Lloyd talking from the heart, nice to hear him mention sounds like Shaka, Fatman, Quaker city, because sometimes some people act like sound system started and finished with Saxon, without these other sounds there is no Saxon we need to remember. Big up Don Sinclair it would be nice hear Frontline, Father Fatman, Ribs from Unity, Nasty rockers, Jah Tubbys, Gemi Magic and many many more keep up the good work.

First of all respect to Don Sinclair and the rest of the crew for the channel and content👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Why doesn’t Lloydie set up a label and produce some tunes again?? I keep hearing all of the elders (who are in the UK) talking about how bad things are with Reggae but a lot of them are not helping the new generation of producers or sound systems. I’ve been to a few Coxsone sessions in the last 18 months and I don’t hear them play anything from Stingray, Peckings, Buzzwack, Mas-Ski Productions or Starvybz for example. They putting out some good tunes but big sounds like Coxsone are not playing them in the dances too tough unless it’s a special. They’ve been studying this ting in Europe from 19 long time so it should be no surprise that they are beating out some good tune. We still have it over here still. We just need the elders to help out the ones that are starting to do there ting in the UK. Some come on Lloydie and co! Set the bench mark again and go to Jamaica if need be and get the elder musicians to beat out some riddims!!

I always had a preference for Coxsone over Saxon. Got to say though, I don't agree with half of what Sir Coxsone said about reggae and the industry/current situation. Like he said, he listed a number of great singers in Jamaica right now, so the culture is alive and kicking. You CANNOT sensor or ask to sensor the music, the same thing was said about Hip Hop, that it is violent and so on and so forth. Firstly, if you have a target audience that wants to hear it, who is anyone to stop it?! Lets not forget when slackness and gun man tune was dominating reggae - some people wanted it stopped, but in my opinion the 90s was the high point of sound system culture, so much so that I started my own sound. It was the high point for a reason - the music was incredible, the dances were incredible.
People will argue that the current music is a reflection of the world we live in. I don't like the criticism of making music on laptops. Bad music is bad music, whether created on musical instruments or laptops, but plenty of good music has been made on laptops, so to dismiss it outright is being a bit naive/ignorant.
I do agree that the riddims coming out of Jamaica are weak and having heard some European (non black) sound systems play their dubs I can totally see why Sir Coxsone prefers their riddims, its like they have gone back in time to make reggae the traditional way (notice I said "traditional", not "the right way").
