In this video, the corn spiral team shares their progress of a land restoration project at Algoma University in the 2021 Spring/Summer season. After having salvaged the season with a redesign, the plants began to flourish. Sadly, another unfortunate disappointment occurred when straw brought into the site turned out to be filled with Oat seeds, the oats seeded where the corn was supposed to grow and no corn was able to be established. This is the way things go sometimes with land-based work...
A big thanks goes out to all the supporters including, Algoma University for use of their land, Shingwauk Anishinaabe Student Association for their leadership and financial support, Anishinaabe Initiatives for their guidance, SKG for their administrative support, Chief Dean who helped us start off in a good way, all the people on Algoma Universities facilities team for their generous time, all the many Volunteers who came out to help, the students and community who we share this knowledge with, and most importantly Shkagamik Kwe (Mother Earth) for continuing to carry out her sacred mission to provide the Anishinaabe nourishment.
We also want to thank Laidlaw for providing funding for equipment and Dr. Andrew Judge for his continued research on land restoration.
This Land-Based learning video series draws on research supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
