To be successful is one thing. To be successful and share your knowledge means you are on another level. Peter Hurley is on another level. Awesome tutorial.
@broncojonnes Appreciate that! 10 years of busting my ass to get to where I am while having thousands in front of my camera, if I wasn't confident there would be a problem. I'm glad you saw it as that instead of arrogance, I think if I was arrogant I wouldn't share the info. THX!
I was about half way in and heard about tilting the camera to compensate for tilting the head. I did not know that. I learn something new all the time.
Wow, I'm completely new to the world of headshot photography. Thank you so much for posting...awesome information that is pushing me in the right direction. priceless!
@Squeeler1 "Crop" isn't the right word -- he's going to have the retoucher extend the white background all the way to the right of the frame. The end result will be an 8x10 horizontal with the subject over on the left of the frame, so the Kino fixture (or whatever else gets into the frame) sitting in the dead space on the opposite side isn't a problem as long as the subject is completely surrounded by the background and cropped where Peter wants that edge.
@Squeeler1 Most likely because he is shooting medium format. Also it is personal preference. He is shooting left to right meaning if it was portrait it would need to be centered. That not the look he is going for apparently.
This is great! A couple of things... I was pleasantly surprised to see that Peter has a preference for cutting off tops of heads. I have the same preference/tendency, as I feel it's like the person is looking out a window, which, in a conceptual way, s/he is, but I have had to train myself to back off as my clients tend to prefer having hairlines. (Occasionally, unfortunately, I drift to my set-in ways, often resulting in having to discard some of the best expressions.) Perhaps he explains it in the full video, but I was surprised to see the use of a tripod. I suppose it makes little difference when using a solid background, since changing the angle/perspective doesn't create a change in the background, but my experience has been that ever-so-slight changes in the camera angle as you go, can make all the difference in the model's expression, and a tripod, it seems to me, would be somewhat prohibitive, no?
I learn so much watching your videos. Thanks a million tons. btw, I did a self portrait headshot with no make up but with squinching. Tested it on FB and got rave comments. I am hooked :)!!
Thanks for this. Peter, you seem to manual focus. Just wondering how you do it? Looks like you adjust back and forth round the focus point till you hit it. Do you miss focus on the eye sometimes if doing it manual? Cheers
@januar324 @januar324 Medium format would matter if he wasn't using the prism finder (it's really awkward to use a waist-level finder with the camera sideways, but with an eye-level prism finder it's not a problem -- and Peter does do verticals when he needs to). The white space is as important as the subject in any photo, and Peter has found that giving the subject lateral space to "move" in makes a livelier, more commercial, and more appealing picture.
One of the most iconic headshot album cover of all time was “ Meet The Beatles . What are your thoughts about the album cover of “ Meet The Beatles “ ?
Thank you. I have one more question and I'll leave you be ( new to this) I have a Canon 550d, so is there a specific software I can use to tether shoot or should I just use lightroom 4?
Please be reminded that whats actually seen on a computer screen is way different from what you see in camera. I think he over exposed his images a bit so that he have more control of the editing. And better yet, its a Mac to a camera. So the display will project differently on camera.
I downloaded "The Art Behind The Headshot" and I'm glad I didn't pay $200 for it, in fact I don't recommend that "tutorial" to anyone. Why ? Because its educational value is very low. If it was converted into a textbook it would be not more than 15 pages long. Can you imagine any serious photography book being only 15 pages long ? Of course not, it doesn't exist. And can you imagine anyone buying any good photography book for $200 ? Of course not ! Again ! Videos are vastly overratted compared to books. People think videos have information that is not available elsewhere, but it's false ! That tutorial is 4 hours long, think how many hours it takes to read a book, lets say 12 hours, so now you know that a book contains 3 times more information than this tutorial yet a book costs only $20 (if recent and brand new). So if you spent those $200 on ten books you would acquire 30 times more information !

Peter Hurley is the Jedi Master of headshots. Amazing you can learn so much from a twenty minute clip. Fantastic.
Genius at work. Excellent style, confident, and most importantly a great eye.

The sound of that shutter sounds beautiful. I'd get addictive to it

AWSOME!! Fstoppers for LIFE
People can misunderstand 'confidence'
when coming from a good looking guy and turn it
into arrogance ...
Craftsman at work !

Peter Hurley is magic.
@MightyShakaZulu Appreciate that I mix it up all the time. Longer stage now, but my next move is shaving it again!
Wowzer... I'm impressed with the fees he charges. So much less than I thought it would be..especially from someone who is famous. You can't beat that.
Another good show. Excellent Photographer and Teacher

Great job man. Good information and hot guy teaching us, what else we want. Thanks Peter

i do the same tilting thing with headshots! lol def gives me more confidence shooting headshots lol

Yes true and he is not making silly jokes like many posters or wearing weird outfits.
The guy in the beginning was very handsome. He looks better with his head shaved brings out his features
Great info!
@RosePhoto1 Just saw your comment. Love it! THX!
Thanks for this. Peter, you seem to manual focus. Just wondering how you do it? Looks like you adjust back and forth round the focus point till you hit it. Do you miss focus on the eye sometimes if doing it manual? Cheers
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Very helpful indeed, thanks.

At around the 11:00 mark he mentions the software. Hasselblad Phocus
Probably Hasselblad Phocus software.
Damn, this is really good stuff
What program is he using that allows him to see the photo he's taking on his computer?
Funny subtitles...love it! :D
@heuykiller always!
you allways focus manual please? does Hasselblad not have this automaticaly AF as good
Thanks for sharing!

this is why i love youtube.
Way Cool
Thank You
What's the focal length of that lens?
4:10 - if he's going to crop so much off the right, why not shoot portrait?
Thanks again, you were very helpful. ^_^
Manual focus?
great stuff :) thanks
7:10 is the best part
"You're miserable" :laughs: SNAP!
Anyone know the Instagram of the model?
great :-)
18:50
The button on his left arm is right in the center of the o in .com lol
a video of a photoshoot/photography
@1rhett1 120mm f/4 macro =)
LED or OLDE, very little heat.
He's pretty cute!
Peter is great, video is great, but I think the images are really bad. The model look much much better in the video, instead the photos.
He mentioned a retoucher... a lot of photogs rely on retouching quite a bit. More could definitely be done in-camera if the time and care is taken.
Please be reminded that whats actually seen on a computer screen is way different from what you see in camera. I think he over exposed his images a bit so that he have more control of the editing. And better yet, its a Mac to a camera. So the display will project differently on camera.
He looks better with the shaved head.
$1,100.00? I don't know anyone in L.A. who's an actor would pay that much for headshots.
+JULIAN GARCIA You get what you pay for.
I wish it wasn't $300, more like $99 be a nice price.

Okay who has the pirated version? JK! x)
Model looks so much hotter with shaved hair......
Great information!
