A wonderful story teller. Have read many of his short stories in English literature class. Wish he was around to write about the world as he saw it today.
Coming from a time when science and technology were fundamentally changing his world, I think he'd have a few choice words to give regarding a society that no longer venerates education.
I went to his house In Connecticut. It was kind of fascinating. His house was adjacent to Harriet Beecher Stowe’s. Twain was a mix of juxtapositions. He brilliantly wrote about the lives of the lowly in Mississippi, yet he was one of the first in his town/ state to get electricity and a phone. He had a phone so early on, there was literally no one to call. Also, amazing how he was born and died on the same day of the comet’s passing. He predicted his death, and it happened on that day. Weird huh?
No...words, thoughts & beliefs are the creative force, once that is known, he set in motion his going out with the comet & for those who know these Laws of Mind, there is no surprise.
May God bless 'Mark Twain'. He and his old wisdom constantly encourage me. He's perfectly modern and though his body is long dead, his spirit will remain long after I am gone . . .
Mark Twain. America's greatest novelist. I lived in Elmira , N.Y. where the great man is now buried. His small, glass study is still on the lawn of Elmira College.

Oh my goodness. I've heard of hat pins, but never knew what they were! I assumed they were decorative. They literally pinned the hat to the head through the hair. Awesome.

Not to my knowledge, but there is a recording out there of someone who knew him well doing what was regarded as a very accurate impression of his style of speech.
Pity there is no recording of his voice, it would be great to know if he spoke like the actors who have played him in TV and movies typically portray him speaking.

No technology? You are aware they had electricity, telephones, movie cameras (in which he's standing in front of. Duh) automobiles and airplanes, right? That would be the new technology back then
I wonder if those were his 2 daughters or his wife and one of his daughters? I don't recall what year his wife died. At least one of his daughters lived with him the rest of her life, dying young from an epilepsy seizure in the bath. He wrote about finding her, and the guilt he felt, just as he felt guilty for the death of his toddler son. That little lad went out for a carriage ride with Daddy, and Daddy was so concerned with business that he neglected to ensure that the blankets stayed on his little son. The child caught cold and died. Such sorrow for such a humorous writer.
As much as I love this channel, i cant deal with its comment section anymore, every second comment is just a critique on the times we live in instead of just enoying the history, its annoying
I agree with you. it's to the point where i just roll my eyes. I may not like everything that's going on today, but Twain certainly didn't like everything that was going on back then. Nothing changes.
Watching that Lady making several attempts to push such a long & lethal hat pin right through her hair (or her head!) - without the very useful & prudent assistance of a mirror - was quite a nerve wracking experience… 😬
His two daughters are with him. Jean, the one on the right, would drown in the bathtub that Christmas Eve, and Twain would die the next year. His oldest daughter Susie died of meningitis in 1896 at the age of 24. The man handing the hat to Clara is most likely her husband Ossip Gabrilowitch, whom she married the same year as the film was made. Clara had one daughter who lived to adulthood but had no children of her own, so there are no descendents of Mark Twain still living
Did everyone listen to middling quasi-ragtime piano during the late 1800s and early 1900s? Are we supposed to believe that the only kind of popular music in those days was essentially a variation of Scott Joplin?
Twain passed away few months after this was recorded. Truly a rare clip of a man with such legacy. RIP you literary giant bastard!!

I visited his beautiful home in Hartford, CT when I was a kid. I still remember the magnificent sleigh that was gifted to him from the Czar.
In Redding, CT (a small New England town about 60 miles northeast of Manhattan). I used to live 3 miles from Stormfield. He started our town library.
Very cool silent film of Mark Twain.
