My gma was born in the 20s and i have her hats and her steel cut beaded bag reticule. They all r in wonderful condition. They r some of my most precious belongings. I have no idea when she got the bag, but it was hers and she gave them to my mom who gave them to me.
$37 in 1920 would be $510 in today. $100 in 1920 would be $1378 today. As someone who worked with beads to create art pieces, I loved this episode. The intricate detail and tiny size of those beads made those purses a mind-boggling task. I would have loved to watch the process.
Okay Doris, I gotta say it. I dont just want-I NEED an episode on furs. Not only am I dying to know what kind of coats The Way We Wore has-but I would love to listen to your knowledge on furs as a luxury and as a fashion throughout the 20th century. My favorite vintage category for sure. I am such a huge fan of you and this channel-I watch your episodes all the time. Love you Doris! ❤️🧡💛🤍 Happy Valentine’s Day!🌹 Xo, Sarah
Hi Sarah. Thanks for your sweet note and for being a part of our community! Sorry to say I probably it won’t be doing an episode on furs. In the 40 years I’ve had The Way We Wore, I rarely include furs for a multitude of reasons. I hope that doesn’t stop you from continuing to watch our episodes. And who knows- I may surprise you one day. Hoping all is well with you and your lives ones. Kind regards, Doris
I recently discovered your series on the Smithsonian channel and loved it. Now I am thrilled to find your RUclips channel. I love vintage and collect hats and a bit of clothing. One dress is from the 1890s, is very plain with a bit of lace, and converts from a day dress to maternity. There was a plaid cotton dress and a top appropriate for a wedding outfit (but it is literally falling apart). I have two high lace-up black boots. Both are for the same foot. The lady had one leg shorter than the other so she kept replacing one boot or shoe. The clothes were in terrible shape, found in an attic trunk. She was my husband's great-grandmother and his grandfather was born in 1892. Around 1900 She and her sister-in-law moved in together with their children. Her husband and his brother abandoned their families and moved from New Brunswick, Canada to Alberta, Canada, and started new families. Hi from snowy Atlantic Canada.
Oh, this was so much fun! Like some others, I'd love a segment on vintage metal mesh bags. In the meanwhile, I'll just keep loving every episode you put out. Each is so entertaining, informative, and so well done and presented. Also, Doris, may I had my voice to the chorus of those wishing you well? I am so glad that you are recovering from all your challenges this year. I found you because of the pandemic and you have made it much easier to live through in so many ways. Thank you dear lady. Until next time, from a true and real fan with much appreciation.... ;)
If youtube were a university, id take doris channel for a sure elective. So much to learn! Doris is the professor we deserve with our tuition 😊 love you Doris. Always looking forward in your every video… im happy your channel is constantly growing.. followed you when u were still 20k. God bless!
I love this video and will refer to it again. So glad you are covering this subject because I am a seed beader.. But I really wanted to say your hair looks amazing!
Purses are the best. They always fit. I have a small collection of antique chainmail bags, one in particular I know you would love. It's very small, sterling silver chainmail with six little teardrop shaped baubles that hang from the bottom. The top of it opens with what I think is called a "gate mouth", the closure/lid of the bag has an amethyst stone about the size of a quarter, and the bag hangs from a silver chain with a ring attached. My favorite bags to carry are old Betsey Johnson from the early two thousands, they were so well made, and all genuine leather back then. Now that Steve Madden owns her brand they're such poor quality, and in my opinion really juvenile looking. They've always been kitschy, and unique, but I feel like the new ones are made for children. I've always wanted an old carpet bag, but haven't found one yet.
Not gonna lie, I would love to buy some of those vintage bags and pair them with a matte black evening gown for the purse to be the star or a period appropriate dress, such as an 1810s dress with a reticule or a Robe de Style for the 1920s piece.
Love the beaded bags ! Brings back memories of my mother and aunties wearing their beaded purses . In their honor beaded bags were in my collections and I beaded every bag , both in glass and metal beads . I really liked beading,. Take care .
Thank you for this fascinating lecture. A beautiful art. Would you be kind enough to share with us your wonderful success with your diet. You look so glamorous.
Hi Madeleine. You’re too kind! Not sure if you saw my “Second Chances” episode. I had an extra large size egg brain tumor that had been building up for some time and between that and the pandemic, I blossomed. Add to that the steroids I had to take to reduce the swelling- so weight gain slowly added up and was inevitable. 10 months later I have been trying to do linages 3 times a week and have lost my sweet tooth. Trying to drink more water and eat balanced meals without over eating. Not easy to do, especially since I LOVE carbohydrates!! The best thing is to drink a lot of water and some exercise. 3-4 pounds a months adds up. Thanks for noticing !! Happy holidays!!
I am a subbie for quite some time….and I continue to enjoy all the info you share. I’m trying to plan an in store visit soon. Thank you for sharing your collection & anniversary knowledge!
Just came across this incredible video. And I live in Los Angeles. I called a friend and we are making plans to visit your store. My name is Ronnie and I am a picker see you soon
Thank you so much for covering this topic. I am a weaver and vintage clothing enthusiast. Doris is person I could be besties with, her knowledge and perspective is astonishing!
I love listening to you Doris. You have such an appreciation for everything you present. If only we had some way of knowing more about the original owners of these beautiful bags 🔮✨ … to time travel to one of these stores and watch a woman select her bag 😌
You are such a precious treasure Doris. Loved this episode. I use vintage in my daily life but do have several very old pieces under glass on acid free backing that I hang on my wall. I appreciate the artistry of beadwork. Continued best wishes for a healthy 2022!
All of your videos are so informative and I enjoy them very much. These purses are truly works of art. How do you display your collection? My mother gave me a beaded purse from the 1950's and I cherish it because it was hers. Thank you for sharing your collection.
Display really depends on how much of a stickler you are to conservation. Shadow boxes are great because they rest and don’t have any stress points. If there is a frame and a chain handle, you can actually hang them like a painting. But remember - dust and direct sunlight is it’s enemy - so you need to use a light brush every now and then and mount it away from rays of sun. There are so many other ways to enjoy them. So wonderful it was your mother’s! Have a superb holiday and thanks for your interest!! Doris
Loved this! I am an off-loom bead weaver and am obsessed with beads. Would love to get my hand on some steel cut beads to work with. I have a small collection of beaded purses, One being a steel cut 1920's framed one that I bought for my wedding. Its just one solid silver colour though, no fancy pattern, but I love it none the less.
In Canada, beadwork is known as a traditional artform of Indigenous people here. I'm curious if that is partially true in the U.S. as well, since you didn't mention it?
That’s a fantastic comment and insight. I have seen really amazing tribal beadwork that has adorned clothing as well as bags but I don’t think the “fashion” world thinks of it with indigenous people in mind. Thanks for your comment Sarah and Happy Holidays! Doris
Thankyou auntie Doris
You look exceptionally beautiful today. Thanks for interesting information.
Thank you again
Doris. You look gorgeous and strong. I learn so much from you. Keep it coming!
Love !!! Every upload you do, I can’t wait . I’m always Gagged & Gooped 💜💙🧡🖤💚💋🥰😘😍🌈

Hi, I would have enjoyed hearing makers names. Thank you for your great work.
Hi Cheryl! If I had maker’s name I would say them. Anonymous artists are just as important in my opinion.
