    'para' is a spanish word which means 'stop' in english. Pinoys adopted the word 'para' simply because we were colonized by the spaniards.

    The Jeepney has been an iconic vehicle of the Philippines. Nowhere in the world such vehicle exist. Modernized PUV should still have the iconic look of the Jeepney because in has become our identity to the other countries. Like Karitelas, Monkey eating eagle, Balut, etc.

    Centro needs to improve on the quality. I take a ride, 3 times a week, on these NL series from bought from Isuzu Mandaue. The exterior is remarkably built. However, these units under unequal load conditions, to my observation tend to give out far more squeaking sound ( than its Chinese counterparts like the ones from JMC) as the body flexes as the truck moves through imperfections on the roads in Cebu.
    Also, the units released by Isuzu Mandaue for the transport cooperatives in Cebu strangely enough has an audio unit but no speakers. Now what is the point of having an audio unit installed without speakers?

    Isuzu is NOT MODERN.
    All modern PUV should COPY the SEATING arrangement of the HINO PUV because it's more comfortable to the passengers and it will PREVENT over crowding.
    The Isuzu seating arrangement is OLD STYLE and uncomfortable to the passengers. They are PACKED like SARDINES similar to the old jeepneys.

    Very sorry to hear of the "modernization" program, absolute tragedy for the Philippines and the culture that's evolved over the past 40-50+ years. Jeapnies are so iconic and such a rich part of image. Ever since I heard of them as a child I had a deep desire to see them. Aside from that, who would be funding the replacement vehicles for the poor jeapnie drivers?! And how are these replacements "sustainable"?!? They're diesel, they ugly and void of any design flair, as well as bulky and tall! Looks a lot like a corrupt/"buddy buddy" deal between a bunch of government officials and others in the body making/truck industry. Looks like a bunch of obsolete Japanese tech being dumped in the Philippines. Instead of this, the government ought to, I would suggest, be sponsoring electrification of the national fleet. Utilise solar panels on all government building rooftops to provide increased charging capacity. Maybe setup dozens of pumped hydro "batteries" in tanks on mountains etc. Lots of clever and simple solutions that would actually benefit the people of the Philippines far more. Anyway, just the opinions of an Aussie who's governments doing no better, arguably worse😅

    • @Sabalas
      @Sabalas Год назад +1

      1. This is far better than the old jeepneys that not only were also diesel but spewed black smoke everywhere and contributed the most to car pollution in Manila.I don't know why you criticize the new ones for being "unsustainable" but excuse the old ones because they're "culture".
      2. There's no such thing as a "National fleet". Transportation is controlled by local and private sectors. They can go electric if they want since there's already electric jeepneys available but it's their fault if it can't climb the rough terrain of the mountains.
      3. You're suggestion of adding solar panels doesn't take anything into account regarding the Philippines. It's congested so it can't fit on rooves. It's a typhoon area so everything could just get flown.
      4. Simple solutions alright. Good luck setting those up in the mountains without getting destroyed by natural disasters or blown up by communist/islamist militias. Don't forget the occasional landslides in the mountains.

    • @Sabalas
      @Sabalas Год назад

      5. One thing you mentioned is the lack of "design flair" as if adding those ugly paintings would make it look good. Those practices have long died even before Modernization started.
      Jeepneys in the provinces use singular colors like an American schoolbus and Newer Manila Jeeps have plain stainless steel without those colorful paintings.
      Good for them though as that was an eyesore. Especially the unconventional lights and loudspeakers that didn't help anyone.

    • @DavidS-wm9ud
      @DavidS-wm9ud Год назад

      @Sabalas 1. It's not in any way "far better", as I stated, at best it's "marginally" better and at what cost?! Who pays for it?! Dare say they cost far more than a jeapney! They're paid for with debts?! By "forcing" little "mum and pop" owners to "upgrade" with a massive loan which they then proceed to default on and lose everything!? How is that a positive outcome!?
      If it is indeed so “important” to stick with a fossil fuel, why not sign a deal with the likes of Peugeot and manufacture their highly efficient and reliable DW10 series engines in the Philippines. Sell “adaptor” kits to “upgrade” all jeapneys to a highly efficient and reliable diesel engine while also creating employment.
      I criticise the new ones with good reason because they do, completely, lack character. Jeapneys, by contrast, are a national icon that many folks overseas would view as synonymous with the Philippines and its culture.
      2. There is always a “national fleet” regardless of ownership. What I was referencing is the disposition and make up of the transport system within the Philippines. As for the impediments to “going electric” it’s rather odd that on the one hand you make the claim that jeapneys are to blame for “spewing black smoke everywhere in Manilla” and yet simultaneously throw the claim that electrics can’t solve the issue due to being unfit for “rough terrain of the mountains”. As the emission/noise/pollution “issue” is generally within a cities metropolitan area, I would suggest, electric is indeed extremely suitable! (And lets not forget one of the worlds best 4 wheel drive/off-road vehicles happens to be electric! **Ahem! Rivian**
      Making excuses to try and support the dying/irrelevant Japanese automotive industry simply doesn’t “cut it” any longer.
      3. Your suggestion that solar panels can’t be used due to a few typhoons is nothing but absurd. As a matter of fact, they’re already well used in the Philippines and make a lot of sense, both environmentally and, in many ways more importantly, financially. If a flimsy tin roof, as is often used, will survive, then rest assured, properly fastened solar panels will also!
      And once again, your absurd justification of some far off mountain situation that wouldn’t be the case for 95% of the use cases, that is truly outdated and odd thinking. If going electric truly doesn’t suit those situations, then don’t! But for the vast majority of situations it more than makes sense! So it’s time to “get with the times” as they say.
      4. If solar panels on a roof will get destroyed by landslides and militants, so will buildings especially any with massive tanks of gasoline or diesel under them! Yet again, an old tactic of the fossil industry to use “out there” excuses as to why changes for the better ought not be made.
      It seems to me that you are a person of “vested interests”. You clearly have a motivation to try and “cover up” the “thoughtlessness” of this entire “campaign”. That being said though, if you have a vested interest then presumably you’d want your “Investment” or “interests” to be far more profitable and successful. If that were the case, then it’s folks like you that I’d be delighted to work with and help grasp the enormity of the electric revolution and the ways in which, like it or not, it will inevitably impact.
      There are a myriad of ways by which profits and great wealth can be attained as we navigate massive societal changes as the result of this energy revolution. Selling outdated Japanese diesel trucks as “environmentally sustainable” isn’t one of them and is only doomed to failure in the long term. If Venezuela, an oil producing country, can be nearly bankrupted and have sky high gas prices, then rest assured, the Philippines won’t in any way be immune. Having high energy imports is a national security issue in my view, and fossil fuel powered vehicles are nothing but a threat to the long term stability and sovereignty of many nations.

    • @DavidS-wm9ud
      @DavidS-wm9ud Год назад

      @@Sabalas 5. Rather irrelevant but non the less, it's worth noting that a jeapney is an iconic Filipino mode of transportation and ought to be treated as such. The reality is they haven't all switched to "two tone", plenty still have design flair and character and a great deal of history. And again, price. There's never free money floating around. As you mentioned, most transport is privately owned. So what incentive is there for an owner other than being forced through legislation?! And what might that legislation include?!? What if an owner put the same motor that's in the "new sustainable" truck into a jeapney? Are they then allowed to continue with the jeapney?!? Or is this simply a cash grab by some elite individuals who feel they have a right to thousands of poorer folks daily means of income?!?

    • @Sabalas
      @Sabalas Год назад

      @@DavidS-wm9ud
      Here's how the Jeepney Modernization works.
      1. Consolidation - these individual owners have to go. Most often than not, they don't treat public transport as a service. They treat it as a business competition and there have been numerous accidents because of their racing habits (most notable was the jeepney driver who rushed the train tracks and killed his passengers).
      Owners (which are now cooperatives or corporations) are guaranteed their own routes that they no longer have to compete in. They own that line just like a bus company and no longer have to worry about any competition.
      2. Unit Replacement - Jeepneys have to be replaced with a Modern version which requires side doors, cctv and Euro-4 Engines/Electric powered. You won't certainly pass inspection if you just slap on another black smoke engine on a shiny unit. Even if you try to hide it,people like me who have been in the city for long can smell the difference in smoke quality.
      3. Worker's Rights - Modern Jeepneys are required to give a standard salary with benefits. This removes the old system of "boundary" where driver and owner split profits and the driver loses the right to use the jeepney if he can't pay for it which was the reason for the races and speeding.
      Now then, on your subject of "Elitism". What people don't understand is that Modernization has long been planned since the 2000s. They already had "Filcabs" and AC Jeepneys but it didn't take off until 2017. I also don't know how it's "elite" when commuters outnumber the driver. As I said, these drivers are irresponsible and often counterflows or illegally loads to get more passengers.
      People also love to point out how only the foreign manufacturing industry somehow were allowed by Government to build Modern Jeepneys. This is entirely false. The way this works is you apply for a prototype and once approved, you can now manufacture it. I only know two local companies that applied from the get go and the other big players only started once the pandemic forced Modernization into full swing. How is it the Government's fault then that these lazy people didn't prepare for the inevitable and stuck to their old ways? The two locals I mentioned are new players who specialize in EV. Giants like Sarao, Francisco and Milwaukee lost their opportunity because of complacency.
      Lastly, and to be perfectly honest. I don't give a shit if these "poor people" suffer because of their backwards thinking. They literally thought they can keep using the same formula for 50 years without becoming obsolete.
      The constant racing, the unimproved engines, the smoking driver that fights his passengers, the guy who has a rotting roof and goes on a rage when someone punches it, the lying moron who raises his prices, the loudspeakers that deafens everyone including the driver.
      None of them ever considered that they were asking for it. No improvement for 5 decades. While Korea started building cars from their Willy's, Filipino Jeepney makers stuck to adding scrap metal and selling them to "poor people" instead of the wider populace. While Busmakers constantly evolved their units, The Jeepney design remained the same but for more passengers.
      I'm sorry but I don't pity them as they sure as hell didn't pity the young me.
      As of now, +60% of the provinces have Modern Jeepneys. Manila is the only stubborn one with less than 30%. Their jeepney strike actually cut short after 2 days because they didn't expect the low turnout of protesters (I observed that it was indeed lower than the 2017 strike). As much as we want to "preserve the culture" or "save the drivers", It's now inevitable and they should just accept the hard truth.
