Is your friend who gave you the Filipino pastries a Filipino? I love the basic ensaymada with lots of cheese. We love it hot and eat it for snacks with barako (strong) coffee. Sometimes it's my breakfast also. We also have potato bread. Ube is purple yam in the Philippines.
The plain ube jam from Baguio Philippines is the best! We have lots of food made of ube.

Penmanship is a thing in Filipino education (i.e. a part of the curriculum in its own right). Start out in 1st Grade, and then EVERYTHING has to be written with cursive writing. In fact, it's a sense of identity in the private school system.
It's always a treat seeing people react positively to Filipino food. The family setting especially made it even better! :)
