So sad for Pedro and the team. They did their best. So wonderful to see how much they cared. Sometimes an animal is just too far gone and too weak to survive treatment. It's tough.
I am so sorry, big hole in the hearts. He was amazing friend at the zoo. God bless him. The lesions were disgusting. You cannot keep them forever, no matter what. They go so fast. Kudos to all the keepers, staff, everyone. Take care. Write a children’s book about him..
Ohhw😥what a sad end for this awesome Anteater, the doctors did all they could - i had tears... the comfort for his female is outstanding ! Ty !💝👍very sensitive emotional story
So incredibly heartbreaking 💔 😢. The vets are truly invaluable and try their hardest. They are invested with not only their talents. But with their hearts! 🌬💜✌
In These days of people being greedy and killing those innocent animals, you guys are really great U take care of those animals, cry when they are no more, relieve them in their stresses Thank god, there is someone to save those lil nature's children. RIP Padro 😔
📺 I enjoy watching the show, truly i do and it's good too. So eventually I hope that there will be new seasons of the show coming soon. I said hopefully.
It could have been easily transmitted by a rodent carrying the disease that entered the enclosure. Transmission is generally only via direct contact with an infected individual. As long as he was quarantined and the keepers used proper PPE (as shown in the video) it would not spread to other animals. Humans can also catch cow pox from animals as it is a zoonotic disease. This is actually how scientists developed the smallpox vaccine! They noticed that dairy workers who had caught cow pox from cattle had an immunity to smallpox. The development of a smallpox vaccine followed this discovery. Quick edit: It is not idiopathic and is a virus.
Cowpox is an extremely contagious virus that can be spread to almost any species of mammal, especially in UK, his country of origin. Pedro could have been infected from any source: contaminated food/water, a sick caregiver or who accidentally touched something contaminated, a sick visitor who threw food into his enclosure, even a wild rodent that entered his habitad could have given him cowpox...
They literally gassed him and force fed him hoping he would recover and i suspect his heart stopped from too much gas. If this is true then those vets are quacks.

Rest in peace pedro :(

RIP Pedro 😢
So 😔 sad rip Pedro you were a good anteater.
No criticism, just genuine interest: were you ever able to determine the source of the infection? How did the female avoid becoming infected?
Nature people and animals where unexpected and things happen part of life journey 😮
What a shame bless him 😥😥😥😥😥😥
Oh poor Pedro...
Just Heartbreaking my heart hurts

Requiescat in Pace, Pedro Giant Anteater.
How did Pedro get cow pox? Idiopathic or from a virus and is this something that would easily spread to other animals in the zoo?

Pedro the legend RIP
Absolutely saddening
He was supposed to father again :(
At least he was able to procreate before he passed. In a way he's still living
That was brutal to watch! :(
