I personally am loving the new TEST/DRIVE segments, gives me a new drive video to watch everyday on top of the weekly segments they already provide Plus I love Matt Farah
Is that it? Matt I'm not looking to buy the car, I just want to dream a little. Tell me what the thing's like to drive, how does the engine feel, what's the performance like, how does it take corners. Does it feel like a Porsche? What's it like at speed? Dude where's the rest of the review!
Revitalizing this question. I recently bought one. It's amazing in all ways. I haven't timed it, but with a tune I'm pretty sure it gets to 60 as fast as my mk5 VW R32, it's quiet, steering is very precise, super easy to drive, handling is great, suspension stiffness is a perfect balance between comfort and sporty. At speed... It will cruise at over 100 mph and you'll feel like you are going 60. It feels like a Porsche. It's the best vehicle in its category that I've ever driven in my life, and I can't think what I'd rather have.
Well-stated. I was thinking of "shallow" or "lacking depth." As Banana Fish states above, the quality of these videos is very good from a production standpoint, but the substantive content is lacking (my words). What about the vehicle's suspension feel? What about the control layout? What about any other element which makes the Cayenne unique from the Audi and Volkswagen offerings? Additionally, the comparisons with the BMW and Merc vehicles muddied up the review. Is this a comparison of the Porsche with its siblings, offerings from other vendor or a driver's first impression? I have come to love the /DRIVE related videos over the past few months, but this particular review left me wanting.
Loving the new series! Just wondering though, not that I dislike Matt at all, he's doing an awesome job - very straightforward and easy to digest but is this Matt's own series that he does by himself along with /Tuned or are the other presenters going to sub in once in a while?
I've had a Cayenne Diesel for 6 months now, I think this review really overlooked the sheer beauty of such a well balanced car. The performance and engineering of a Porsche, combined with the utility and space of a truck, and finally (perhaps most impressively) incredible range and efficiency particularly on long trips. This is the vehicle you would want in a zombie apocalypse. My two cars prior to this were V8s (Mercedes ML550, BMW 545i), I initially was looking at the Cayenne S but was somewhat underwhelmed by the performance as the ML550 would quite dramatically throw you back in your seat when you put the hammer down from a standstill. I decided to give the diesel a try and was blown away. The best way to describe the performance is zippy. It's quick around town (extra zippy in sport mode), passing other cars, etc.. the only thing you don't get is the seat slamming off the line acceleration I had on my ML550, but how often did I really do that anyway. The ML550 cost $150 to fill up and would get about 450km out of a tank, the Cayenne costs about $130 to fill and gets anywhere from 850-1200kms from a tank (I live in Toronto, Canada). It really is an incredible all around car, I can't really imagine anything else on the market that really compares to the complete package that is the Porsche Cayenne Diesel.
@@Neil4Speed I've since changed to a 2020 Cayenne Turbo. The seat slam is back haha. Still miss the diesel in a lot of ways, especially the range. Great car.

I don't like how some people really don't care about the fact that their seatbelt is twisted! It's less safe and more uncomfortable. It's a small OCD I have but it makes it really hard for me to watch that video :P A Drive test driver should know that too...
TheSmokingTire I don't have OCD so it didn't make the video hard to watch, but I did notice it and found it annoying/funny enough to make me want to post a comment about it. Which is what I'm doing right now.
Watching a man talk while driving on the freeway... riveting. No one is going to use DRIVE as a car purchasing resource, this channel excels because of its entertainment value. Keep up the good work you've been doing previously and spice this series up a bit - sincerely a DRIVE fan
Excellent car review! ( still not a fan of SUV) But I think you have a good recipe/ format to follow now. Give short and sweet list of specs, and opinions about options, and a comparison to other vehicles in it's marketplace. Nailed it! PLEASE CONTINUE TO USE THIS FORMAT TO REVIEW VEHICLES!
Hello Drive people. Can you please stop scoring these reviews? The scores are meaningless and gives me as a viewer no clue about the car. It's actually more confusing after hearing the actual review (Matt talking about the car). Otherwise I love your content, thank you!
Your issue will most likely resolve itself as more videos are released; They are a basic point system that really has no relevance what so ever if you see them by themselves - however if you have, say, 10 different score-boards they produce an easy and valuable (if not subjective) comparison of the different cars. Of course there is the thing of different segments, but for that you have to do a little brain-thinking yourself - nothing is perfect.
I was actually just about to post a similar comment. I really like the style of this review; Short, simple, subjective look at actual road cars that we would normally drive. However, I don't like seeing numbers in reviews. It adds nothing to the review I just spent 5 min watching. Numbers assumes that you have the authority to make such claims, with research to back it up, and that takes time. Personally, for this style of review, I think quantity is better than quality (in terms of amount of in-depth content, not production quality). And leave the more in-depth content for shows like AFTER/DRIVE or another series. Alternatively, if I want to see more in-depth coverage of a particular car, with reviewers having done months of research, testing, comparing, interviews, etc., I'll go to a car magazine, or other in-depth source for that information. You are to cars, as Popular Science is to actual scientific publications. Anyway, great video and keep them coming ;)
Matt, I assume that this is going to be a "to the point", short and sweet, high-frequency (lots of videos) series? Kind of a "TL;DR" approach to the typical magazine car review?
My wife just got a loaded diesel Grand Cherokee last week and it's superb! Has every feature of that cayenne except adjustable damping and cost a considerable amount less... Very happy with the purchase :)
Matt, Great review! I've read some of the other comments posted and I think your style of review is excellent.. You tell us your expert/industry/personal opinion(s) about the car and the it's competition in and around the segment.. I agree that the Touareg is a much better value for 20plus grand less.. minus the air susp., nicer paint & badge and a few other niceties..
Guys. Stop! You all do some great work but this test/drive is not something that most of us tune in for. Matt thought your Panama vid was great , looking forward to the next installment.
With just a chip or tune the power goes through the roof, the engine is very restricted from factory. Cayenne has way higher resale value than all of the others.
I have a Volkswagen Touareg Executive with the Diesel engine. It's absolutely incredibly I get 32 mpg on the highway with a surprisingly large amount of comfort and luxury. I would not get a Cayenne diesel after my Touareg if it was even the same price. I have drove both, and the Cayenne just felt like it was lacking something. The Touareg honestly looks better in my view anyways.
Alexander Est" A truck (US, CA and AU) or lorry (UK and Ireland) is a motor vehicle designed to transport cargo." This is designed to carry humans and comfortably.
Chris O Plenty of trucks that couldn't match that? When 1930? Seriously? You driving a 1/4 ton mini truck like a Dodge Dakota? Otherwise I call bs. Don't get me wrong, I love the Porsche Cayenne (especially the diesel), but come on guys.. If you want a truck and ACTUALLY intend to use it as a truck anything less an a 3/4 is a waste of your time and money. Seriously, how many Cayenne owners will tow and off-road with it regularly? Soccer moms all hyped up on Ice Road Truckers?
The Cayenne offers off-road capability that none of the competition offer here in the States. In the rest of the world you can get them with off-road equipment, but not here, here you'd need a Range Rover to compete off-road and then LR don't offer the RR in a diesel here. If you never set foot on anything other than a dirt road at worst, then maybe an X5 would do, but I like to hit the mountains now and then to camp out and want to know I can probably get out if a storm blows in. Also, you can load the Cayenne diesel up with lots of luxury beyond the competition and I can tell you personally that the MSRP can climb over $115K, but for that you aren't compromising.
Not sure if its available in the States but there is a Cayenne V8 diesel available in other countries. So loading a V6 diesel up to 115k would be madness.....far better off with a V8 diesel with less options IMO :)
I agree that they feel rushed. This is the second one I've seen. Farah is way out of his comfort zone of tire smoking beasts, but I genuinely love the idea. GO DRIVE.
I think all sports car brands will be bringing in more diesels & hybrids. I think (i'm not 100% sure) they need to meet average emissions/carbon footprint quotas that have been implemented. So if you make only sports cars then your gonna have to do something to meet those requirements. Also 4x4's and SUV's seem to sell very well and so give the companies some money to play with when it comes to their sports cars!
Drive a Touareg back to back with a Cayenne to see where the $20k difference comes from. The Touareg interior feels low rent compared to the Cayenne, which feels like you're riding in the Millennium Falcon.
the cayenne is one of those cars that you just buy for the name. the only one i might consider is a base V6 model, but any other trim level and it is just too expensive for something that i would use to commute. the Turbo S is a nice performance SUV but at $145,000 its something that i would keep at home every day.
JF, what are you doing? What public are you trying to reach with this format? You guys were able to open a great niche in automotive reviews doing cool things throughout different car cultures. That's the DRIVE trademark, its equity. Sure...you can review 'common' cars. But not with this" Top Gear 80's format". Giving scores on categories? Come on! When we tune into DRIVE we expect a certain formula that's just not present here. What next? Have Chris Harris see if a water bottle can fit in the glove box? Keep up the good work guys. Don't wonder in this direction.....
got a 63 plate cayenne sport last year 2013, contemplating whether to get the newest model and sell this one on. Bought for £89k could sell it for £80k .
My dad's got a v6 hybrid vw touareg, I love it, it's a very nice car, it's very fast and comfortable. With that in mind, I don't know why anyone would want the cayenne over the vw because it's just more expensive, and uglier and probably worse in some cases. Sorry, but I don't see the point.
It's probably the same... maybe in cayenne you can have some more extras like better audio or more customization... maybe the steering feels differently... but i don't know if it's worth paying for that things this difference in price. Everyone has to choose ; )
There's still subtle differences between the two. Such as interior material used. Also, I prefer the look of the cayenne over the touareg. However, I do understand your p.o.v and agree that the vw is a more level headed purchase.
David Shmavid well that depends on what porsche, I think that's the mindset for most cayenne drivers, and certainly that's what's true of many people who buy a new 911, but the customer base has a division of enthusiasts too, especially when it comes to old 911s. It's an interesting market, because there are some who love porsche, and some who are just cocks. We have a 996 in the family as well, which is nice, I like it, but it's a little annoying to see that the same car is also being driven by every half-successful estate agent and bank teller in the world.
Narciso Oliveira believe me, the feel of an electric motor on top of a v6 pulls a lot of power, but it's the power delivery that's most impressive. The specs are decent, but they don't do justice to what a powerful hybrid feels like in a straight line.
What on Earth Matt did wrong in order to drive slow cars that he doesn't like ? Like someone told him that he must serve his punishment or he would never drive tuned car ; because he doesn't seem happy at all . There is no point in this video where he drove it more than '8' mph .
Cayenne has certain options not available on Touareg i.e. ventilated seats. Cayenne diesel engine is not exactly the same as VW/Audi versions - Porsche has reworked and improved certain parts. X5 uses runflats. Arguably, non of the competition handles as well as Cayenne.
I really like this car but (and there is a big but) I'm a Die Hard Porsche fan soo I need the 4.8 V8 with 507( The old Cayenne ) but I would go for the Panamera Im amazed how awesome that car looks and since I sat In a Panamera Turbo Im addicted to everything BiTurbo V8 leather wood and power everything
A 911 Carrera D diesel would be awesome Wait until VW makes a Bentley version of this SUV. I'm surprised they haven't made a cheaper Skoda version yet. Even though they don't sell Skoda over here, supposedly these silly crossovers are actually getting popular over there.
Unfortunately Matt does not do these very well, and there are far better online reviews for normal cars out there. I think Drive should stick to what it was doing before. Anyway, now that I've seen two of these, time to never click on a Review again and just patiently wait for the Chris Harris series to start.
why do the germans love to put giant back seat headrests in the middle in cars with tiny rear windows? i mean how often are you going to have someone back there who is tall enough to use it? i guess its better to block 50% of your rear visibility all the time than not have a headrest for someone sitting in the middle .01% of the time
I personally am loving the new TEST/DRIVE segments, gives me a new drive video to watch everyday on top of the weekly segments they already provide

Agree, Ch.Harris. should have done this review!!! instead of the frikkin chevy.
Maybe he still could...let's ask
Still, after that Porsche GT3 review he did 2/3 months back, he is my hero.!
i agree but first it´s a diesel, and then it´s a boring suv.

Love this new setup, much more informative, a few extra mins on each and they're perfect
Love matt's reviews, gets straight to the point and the video doesnt feel like its dragging along, more of matt
thanks for keeping up with awesome new content!
You know, I never knew if I was going to like these, but they are great little videos. Mix of practical advice, plus the DRIVE charm
These videos are good, but feel rushed.
They were made over the course of just a few days.
The video is as always very well produced but it's just too short. I would have quite happily watched another 3 or 4 minutes.
Well-stated. I was thinking of "shallow" or "lacking depth." As Banana Fish states above, the quality of these videos is very good from a production standpoint, but the substantive content is lacking (my words).

This whale-song music matches the car perfectly
I like this addition to the Drive network. Keep up the great job boys.
Love these videos - keep it up /Drive and Matt Farah!
Love these no nonsense or B. S. reviews! Keep them coming please.
Loving the new series! Just wondering though, not that I dislike Matt at all, he's doing an awesome job - very straightforward and easy to digest but is this Matt's own series that he does by himself along with /Tuned or are the other presenters going to sub in once in a while?
Whoa Matt... that was concise and eloquent without a hint of maniacal laughter, well done! you and the whole crew are looking good these days.
I wish these test drive videos were longer. but still, good video, keep it up :)
Loving the these test drives nice work Matt
Where are these arbitrary percentage numbers coming from for the rating system?
Good review Matt. Like seeing some of these reviews of "regular" cars. Look forward to seeing more!
Keep up the reviews. I love this new segment!
do you still need to put the key in the ignition ? is that what i see at the 2:21 mark on the left of the steering column?
First three vids and all with Farah as the host.
New season's not starting off well, guys.
you forgot to mention that they also added sponsored content....
agree u the the mercedes one too?
Cayenne S Diesel? the one with the 4.2L V8 twin-turbo diesel. any chance you guy might let Chris test that one in Europe?

What about the 2014 grand Cherokee diesel with the 3.0l vm engine mated to the zf 8speed?
With just a chip or tune the power goes through the roof, the engine is very restricted from factory.
Cayenne has way higher resale value than all of the others.
Why is there no overall score, like in the both newer reviews?
I have a Volkswagen Touareg Executive with the Diesel engine. It's absolutely incredibly I get 32 mpg on the highway with a surprisingly large amount of comfort and luxury. You lost me the second you called that a "truck"...it's not.
406 lb-ft and 7700 lbs towing...there are plenty of "trucks" that can't match that, like the V8 Dodge in my driveway.
It tows, it's good off road, how is it not a truck? doesn't have truck nutz attached to the hitch?

Other than that, the car makes sense; a big, efficient Porsche for those Porsche lovers who need it.

I really like this car but (and there is a big but) I'm a Die Hard Porsche fan soo I need the 4.8 V8 with 507( The old Cayenne ) but I would go for the Panamera Im amazed how awesome that car looks and since I sat In a Panamera Turbo Im addicted to everything BiTurbo V8 leather wood and power everything
damping not dampening, you are not changing how wet the suspension is.
It's hard to take him seriously with that tattoo 😆
A 911 Carrera D diesel would be awesome
Wait until VW makes a Bentley version of this SUV. I'm surprised they haven't made a cheaper Skoda version yet. Even though they don't sell Skoda over here, supposedly these silly crossovers are actually getting popular over there.
Good quality show. Thanks. Only improvement would be to put Alex Roy in the back seat in a hat and glasses.
diesel costs much less in germany so the more you drive the cheaper gets the car. anyway its a dream and unreachable car for me and ye Im diesel fan.
Is that it?
I almost watched this video just because Matt did it, almost.
Matt please review cayenne S diesel not ordinary diesel. i wonder what you'll feel with V8 biturbo diesel
We don't get the S Diesel in the US.
sorry about that. it's very interesting what your thoughts are about S diesel (as reviewer)
@@TheSmokingTire We don't get any diesel cars anymore because of the stupid emissions cheating thing in 2015, thank you Volkswagen.
in this class of suvs i prefer x5 30d, no idea how they call it in the us
Not a big fan of the new series so far. Just seems like any other infomercial. Looking forward to future videos.
i wonder how porsche would look with outercooled diesel...
Unfortunately Matt does not do these very well, and there are far better online reviews for normal cars out there. I think Drive should stick to what it was doing before. Anyway, now that I've seen two of these, time to never click on a Review again and just patiently wait for the Chris Harris series to start.
why do the germans love to put giant back seat headrests in the middle in cars with tiny rear windows? i mean how often are you going to have someone back there who is tall enough to use it? i guess its better to block 50% of your rear visibility all the time than not have a headrest for someone sitting in the middle .01% of the time
What's up with the unnecessarily long outro?
Why does it have a poor "Ride" rating of 2 and "Grip" of 3 ?
