Hail to a Great British Artist, refuted by his own time and country. This performance demonstrates the artistic level of the progressive rock artists of the 70s, whose works were effectively and violently truncated by the press and record companies. Shame on you Britain!! The future will look back at you and judge you as a nation who pushed your best men into darkness while worshipping Samantha Fox. What a fall from near greatness into sheer misery.
Love Hammill, Adore this song and this performance is blow away!!!!! I have been listening to PH since 1974/75.. seen VDGG in NYC their only NYC Performance OCT 76 and then again in NYC July 2009! Was luckyenuff to see him solo in 1978 at the other end then in 79 at the bottom line! yeha I am lucky!! thanks for sharing!
The stars in the heavens still shine up above me: how lovely they'd seem if you were with me but you're gone through the looking-glass and I am left to pass these nights alone. I'm lost, I'm dumb, I'm blind, I am drunk with sadness, sunk by madness - the wave overwhelms me, the mirror repels me, the echo of your laugh drifts through the looking-glass and I am alone. No friendship, no comfort, no future, no home, the past lingers with me: you're all the love I've ever known and without you I'm nothing but empty and silent, reflecting on all that I've lost. I let you slip away so soon. Can you hear me? This is my song I am dying; you are gone. These words are not enough to save my soul, they just mock me from the mirror. I'm cold and I'm yearning, I've told you I'm burning, my eyes can't stand the light... Like a stray dog in the night I'll shuffle off alone. We all make our futures but I have lost mine; I'm hoping for a miracle but finding no sign.... The stars in the constellations, each one just sadly flickers and falls... without you they mean nothing at all.
Love this. used to have this on VHS. the picture quality on this is a great improvement. Anyone out there ever felt like this?(I have, and Peter has, so there must be more of you forlorn folk out there. He totally nails that emotion. Thanks Peter.
Capolavoro !!!!! Sensibilità poetica come POCHI !!!!!
He is the king of overcoming hardships, not suffering. I also can't believe FlyingJunk's comment was thumbed down to being hidden considering how sensible it is and what a good relationship Peter Hammill has with punk music. It's surprising how many people like Peter's music while approaching it with a narrow-minded attitude. That's where all the negative reviews of his recent albums with or without VdGG come from. People just don't see that they've missed the whole point.
Totally agreed with you. I also think that meanwhile Pink Floyd members were fighting stupidly by their rights of their songs like they were....they forgot about the creation and have got commercialy stucked in 3 safe commercially albums while Peter Hammill was always there giving us new emotional material and fantastic lyrics and music and Roger Waters keeps making money with his The Wall world tour dates... i think we must shared Peter Hammill everywhere on different media pages and apps. Specially for those prog rockers who never heard of him and Vandergraaf Generator. He came to Argentine where i live and he admires Astor Piazzolla.... long life to Mr. HAMMILL
Una nueva gira de VDGG tendra lugar en el 2020. Ojala un milagro los traiga por nuestro pais. Tuve las suerte de verlo cada vez que vino. Es un artista unico. Saludos!
@@jorgemartin5093 Anyone with any sense admires Astor Piazzolla - they both have a huge emotional impact. Peter "lives" his songs - he must be drained by the end of the concert.
oh my. What a performance! One of the great things about Peter Hammill (who i am recently rediscovering) is that no matter how horrible you are feeling and how bad a breakup you may go through, it is never nearly as bad as his. But seriously, the guy is a brilliant songwriter and performer and this performance makes that very obvious. Are there more performances of him with orchestra besides this and "traintime"?
A truly unique and stirring performance. One of my favorites. Litzlitz, thank you. Btw, though it's true that this video footage is superior to the old youtube upload of this, the audio is tinny here. I wonder if that could be rectified. Thanks again for all your great PH uploads!

He's singing by the soul, his heart is singing. The greatest singer!
Yes, you are perfectly right, he is the king of suffering, noone can do it better. I love him.

I love Peter! He should always sing with an orchestra. The bowtie! THe bowtie! Sigh! Thanks for this. Nice quality!
what a song!!! and what a voice!!! this is achingly beautiful!!!
The stars in the heavens still shine

reflecting on all that I've lost.

Magnificent. I just wish my heart wasn't on the same emotional plane as this song right now...
He is a genius!!!
Breaks my heart... Breaks my everytime... But in a good way!
ESTA es una verdadera canción de amor, a diferencia de las miles que se irradian permanentemente por la radio. Abrazos para Peter Hammill.
WOOO0000oooooaaahhh!!! MY FAVOURITE SONG LIVE!!!! thanks fou upload!!!!
An amazing song from the greatest artist in the world.

This is my all time favorite musical performance. Much better than the album version. Truly amazing!

incredible! awesome! I have every single PH and VDGG song, but I never heard of this absolute masterpiece played live ....
Very heartwrenching performance.
What an artist ❤ phenomenal
That is right, I was there in Lille, and he performed only two songs.
Wunderfull artist
Tortured Artist Effect
but a great song,
and delight to see him wallow in pure 19th century Sturm un drang Angst!

Quelle voix j'adore
Maestro
@FlyingJunk It was ALL the critics. They started hailing punks who admitted they couldnt play a note and later playback pop queens whose boobs sang.
I HOPE there's better audio out there
when you were 10 years or him?
This is such an exceptional performance but when they zoom out and he looks like Bill Nye, it kinda makes me laugh. I can't help it. I love it though.
Hey, Bill has gone through some heartbreak too.
Putain !!!!!
love Hammill. hate bowties.
