The IT sector in India typically has longer working hours compared to the Western world, where an 8-hour workday is standard. In India, employees often work 9-10 hours a day. Despite these extended hours, compensation is often significantly lower than in Western countries for comparable roles, making it feel unfair to many workers.
A youtuber named mark wilbury said very amazing lines which depict the reality : work so hard so that your employer may come to office in a Lamborghini while you wait for bus or metro. So sad. The CEO earned around 51 Crore INR while the engineers get package from 3.5 Lakh INR. Which is very meagre.
This is ludicrous, there is difference between working for EMI and working for ROI. The fact that corporate returns have doubled and the same have not been translated into employee wages speaks volume on corporate preferences. This dichotomy of choice with stark variance in favor of economic gains over employee wellbeing is like opting to acquire mileage on short term vision over long term sustenance. Government should intervene and regulate it to reasonable extent before the nation looses its glitter in international perception.
I had a random conversation with fellow bus passenger in a bus a decade ago. He was L&T junior engineer . He shared his experience and in 30 mins I knew jobs at every level in these infrastructure companies is not everyone's cup of tea. They work and sometimes few mins between work they had life.
Indian Co's (even when its MNC and office in India) want to squeeze Indian employees. On papers we do 45hrs week as per labor laws however, ask any employee, the employee will anyways work for 15hrs on any given day! There is no OT. Now its all about ownership. Unfortunately, ownership does not exists only during 9hrs shift!!! This is being voiced out but people at Infosys n L&T are already doing more than 90hrs per week!! Do an anonymous employee survey and you will get that even WFH is not allowed in most circumstances. Employees are easily replaceable is the fact!

Excellent news piece from Firstpost & spot on presentation from Palki. Paying peanuts ,taking talent and hardwork for granted! Such a pity that such monsters are heading reputed companies not only in india but worldwide! They need serious training on employee retention & corporate ethics!
Bertrand Russel one of the greatest intellects of the last century had advocated that people should work 4 hours a day and spend the rest of time on leisure. This would allow them time to spend on cultural activities and lead a better quality of life. He argues that in a post industrialized work overworking is completely unnecessary. On the contrary in India we have a set of leaders who fail to understand that it is innovation and efficiency that leads to success. The reason is quite simple they themselves have never been innovative, their successes can often be attributed to the cheap labor at their disposal rather anything ground breaking. With un inspiring leaders like this, its hardly a surprise that everyone wants to quit the country. The demographic advantage is likely to wasted because everyone wants to escape such a toxic leadership.
Such a shameless thing to say by a corporate chief indicating no respect for Human rights, no considerations for employee's work- life balance, unsoliticited intrusion into personal lives of their employees & compromising their dignity, this all reflects very badly on the entire organisation. This Man needs learning that Nobody is a corporate slave. What is their useless HR team doing?
L&T chairman advocating for a 90-hour work week and dismissing work-life balance are deeply disappointing. Work-life balance is essential for mental health, productivity, and maintaining healthy personal relationships. Suggesting that employees prioritize excessive work hours over their personal lives reflects an outdated mindset that disregards the well-being of the workforce. In today’s world, where employee satisfaction and retention are critical, leaders should focus on fostering healthier work environments, not glorifying overwork. Statements like these not only alienate employees but also tarnish the company’s reputation as an employer of choice. It’s time for leadership to embrace modern values that promote balance, inclusivity, and respect for personal well-being.
When companies focus on maximizing profits and shareholder value there eventually comes a time when employees will be viewed as numbers on a screen. People go from being "assets" to "expenses", hence layoffs of 100+ people in a go to "realign corporate goals". Businesses should exist to address a need or want of customers (created or already existing). Last point, people are not like coal that you keep shoving them into the furnace to face inneviatble burnout.
When I landed to USA and in back in 2002 my manager said, any human being can work 6 hrs a day effectively and after that they work but that is not in efficient manner. I what Palkiji said right which doctor you will go.
Unfortunately corporations in India feel that pertains life should be given a go by in favor of productivity at office. In fact disrupting personal life is seen as a tool to make employee work more.
Building the nation doesn't only mean industry. It also means producing and bringing up the next generation. And you can't do that on a 90-hour week. It's hard enough to do on a 40-hour week.
Nailed it Palki! Provide stock options, workers automatically work more if they to get more for more efforts not hikes that barely keep up with inflation
Expecting people to work 13 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no time off is unreasonable. It reduces life to nothing but work, leaving no space for rest or personal well-being. Does the CEO truly believe that employees exist solely to serve his ambitions?
Industry that I m in and the country I live and work have laws like this Maximum legal working hours 13hours per day With every 5 and half hour there must be a 30 mins break Exceeding 8 hours time and half pay per hour Cross 10 hours Meal allowance and Double time pay. Weekend Saturday first 3 hours time and half pay Rest is double Sunday, night shift double time Public holidays 3times pay Now, everyone wants to work here Show me the bloody money Tax theif corporate Happy to work
The recent remarks by the Chairman of L&T about working on Sundays and dismissively questioning personal time reflect a perspective that displays poor leadership. Modern leadership requires understanding the importance of work-life balance and creating an environment that values employees as whole individuals, not just as resources. Productivity and creativity often thrive when individuals have time to recharge and maintain meaningful relationships outside of work. True leadership is about inspiring commitment through mutual respect and sustainable practices.
Uncertain if it's true or not. On a business trip, the chairman of L&T heard a Chinese individual assert that they are ahead of the United States because they work longer hours than Americans, and he took this personally.
It's time for the chairman to book an appointment with the Phcycologist Councling session, Why Chairman is stearing only his wife on his holidays. This is a ridiculous statement by the Chairperson L&T.
Many companies in india have 9 hours working, in time sheet. Which is already 45 and not counted late works, due to deadline - don't ask. None of the company pays over time. There is no point in raising it because the govt also wanted to increase working hours if you last year news. So same salary work more and taxes we already know. We will not be able fight because we know, the moment we raise voice, atleast 4 people are around to replace me at work :( Family can never replace you so it's okay to earn less and give importance to family EY case was covered so much. What happened ? No labour law amendments. And these same people ask why Indians go abroad !
International Labour Organization report found India now has some of the longest working hours globally, with the average Indian working 46.7 hours per week. And the situation is only worsening. People at the top wants to push it in the range of 70-90 hours per week without proper remuneration. Doesn't make any sense.
L&T Chairman and those of his ilk conveniently seem to be skipping one point of note: They are the CEOs, raking in millions in salary, apart from other bonuses, perks, ESOPs. The employee that they are expecting to selectively emulate them, on the other hand, is mostly an average paid worker arriving at the office on a bike taxi after finishing off all the household chores because they can’t afford a battery of domestic workers that makes ignoring the home a little bit easier.
hourly pay is a necessity in India. Will L&T pay hourly for 90 Hours a week or try to make us a fool by paying for 40 hours and making us work more than double for 90 hours. These sadist oldies need to be called out, they don't have a life of their own and want to take employees' lives as well. Supervizing in glass cages is the easy part. They should come out and work😂
The IT sector in India typically has longer working hours compared to the Western world, where an 8-hour workday is standard.
Who's seeing saars wife when he is off to work on sundays 😅
Underrated comment 👏
Comment could be decent ..why attack his wife who has nothing to do with his insanity
Making 90 hrs work is not patriotism, but hiring as many people so most houses is india will be able to feed themselves is patriotism.
🥴 do employees relax on Sunday to look at their wives or to refresh?🤬
Reframe labour laws: we need company shares instead of salary!!
Question regarding choosing a Doctors deserves Applause
one section of society work 90 hours to pay free food to 80 core people
This is ludicrous, there is difference between working for EMI and working for ROI.
All work at office & no time for partner will definitely make one's life spoilt 🤣🤣🤣
I had a random conversation with fellow bus passenger in a bus a decade ago. He was L&T junior engineer . He shared his experience and in 30 mins I knew jobs at every level in these infrastructure companies is not everyone's cup of tea. They work and sometimes few mins between work they had life.
You are truly the voice of the unheard side. ❤ Thank you
It's simple greed of the chairman
Indian Co's (even when its MNC and office in India) want to squeeze Indian employees. On papers we do 45hrs week as per labor laws however, ask any employee, the employee will anyways work for 15hrs on any given day! There is no OT. Now its all about ownership. Unfortunately, ownership does not exists only during 9hrs shift!!!
This is being voiced out but people at Infosys n L&T are already doing more than 90hrs per week!! Do an anonymous employee survey and you will get that even WFH is not allowed in most circumstances. Employees are easily replaceable is the fact!
India should implement per hours rate for their working employees for every work
Avg Working Hours: 60 hours
Inflation:10%+
Tax: Heavy
Facilities: Comparable to Somalia
Pollution: worst
Politicians: Corrupt
Hum desh ko yaad pyar karte reh gaye, desh humara juice nikal diye 😢
Let's start 90hrs a week from govt offices and sectors at same pay. Then we can see if nation builds.
I once met Narayanmurty in around 2018. Sad that he didn't made those statements before that time.
these old man are crazy
True. Saalo ko majdoori karenge tabhi pata chalega inko.
Nice one Mr. Subramanian nice way to enjoy your weekend
I didn't expected him to glorify employee exploitation.
I'm only 1hr productive daily, rest of the time is just adding extra cost to the company, as me being there and using office AC 😅
There is a reason why we love working from home. It saves our money, time, and energy. It creates more productivity.
Thanks for covering much awaited topic
When I landed to USA and in back in 2002 my manager said, any human being can work 6 hrs a day effectively and after that they work but that is not in efficient manner. I what Palkiji said right which doctor you will go.
L and T chairman if you care so much india than donate your surplus money to India.😂
Spot on with the last example.
Spot on Palki. Longer than 50 hours the rest of the hours is used on gossiping, having tea and looking at social media.
not everybody is as ugly or irritating as you , thats why we and our wives can stare eachother for as long as we want
Unfortunately corporations in India feel that pertains life should be given a go by in favor of productivity at office. In fact disrupting personal life is seen as a tool to make employee work more.
Well said and done
Building the nation doesn't only mean industry. It also means producing and bringing up the next generation. And you can't do that on a 90-hour week. It's hard enough to do on a 40-hour week.
All managers are thinking it he is just brave enough to say it .
I work in L&T & in my team, I have a good work life balance 5 days a week 8 hours per day most of the time. It may depend on the team management.
Nailed it Palki! Provide stock options, workers automatically work more if they to get more for more efforts not hikes that barely keep up with inflation
He got 50 crore ,he can work 24.7
Some one tell him if you work on Sundays and don't take care of your wife.... someone else will.
Expecting people to work 13 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no time off is unreasonable. It reduces life to nothing but work, leaving no space for rest or personal well-being. Does the CEO truly believe that employees exist solely to serve his ambitions?
GOOD question
Industry that I m in and the country I live and work have laws like this
Maximum legal working hours 13hours per day
With every 5 and half hour there must be a 30 mins break
Exceeding 8 hours time and half pay per hour
Cross 10 hours
Meal allowance and Double time pay.
Weekend
Saturday first 3 hours time and half pay
Rest is double
Sunday, night shift double time
Public holidays 3times pay
Now, everyone wants to work here
Show me the bloody money
Tax theif corporate
Happy to work
The last point 🫡
The recent remarks by the Chairman of L&T about working on Sundays and dismissively questioning personal time reflect a perspective that displays poor leadership.
Modern leadership requires understanding the importance of work-life balance and creating an environment that values employees as whole individuals, not just as resources. Productivity and creativity often thrive when individuals have time to recharge and maintain meaningful relationships outside of work.
True leadership is about inspiring commitment through mutual respect and sustainable practices.
Sweatshop supervisor in a suit
If I’m paid like him.. I’ll rush to the office brushing my teeth in the commute..
Work till you get capital, then replace these companies by building competition or selling it back to another competitor lol
We will not be able fight because we know, the moment we raise voice, atleast 4 people are around to replace me at work :(
Family can never replace you so it's okay to earn less and give importance to family
EY case was covered so much. What happened ? No labour law amendments.
And these same people ask why Indians go abroad !
These type of employers should be hiring more employees to fulfil their 90 hrs a week demand. Dont they see that millions of ppl are jobless in India?
International Labour Organization report found India now has some of the longest working hours globally, with the average Indian working 46.7 hours per week. And the situation is only worsening. People at the top wants to push it in the range of 70-90 hours per week without proper remuneration. Doesn't make any sense.
If you are running your own company then you can do 90 hrs otherwise no❤🇮🇳
L&T Chairman and those of his ilk conveniently seem to be skipping one point of note: They are the CEOs, raking in millions in salary, apart from other bonuses, perks, ESOPs. The employee that they are expecting to selectively emulate them, on the other hand, is mostly an average paid worker arriving at the office on a bike taxi after finishing off all the household chores because they can’t afford a battery of domestic workers that makes ignoring the home a little bit easier.
Maaddd .. they should focus on increasing productivity per hour. Not billing hours per human resources.
You work in order to live, not live in order to work.
Greed and hypocrisy at its peak
They should make it 100 hours plus weeks. Make india great again
He's right. We can work 90 hours a week on the condition that we also get paid as he does!
hourly pay is a necessity in India. Will L&T pay hourly for 90 Hours a week or try to make us a fool by paying for 40 hours and making us work more than double for 90 hours. These sadist oldies need to be called out, they don't have a life of their own and want to take employees' lives as well. These people are responsible for India being on rank 126 of the happiness index
