I have travelled on day one 15.98.1977 in MG Vaigai from Tpj to Ms. Green and Yellow livery, 8 second cc coaches , YDM 4 A diesel.loco with Dafasco bogie imported from Canada. It covered the distance in 7 hours then raised to 7.30 hours for safety. It had excellent on board catering.Thayir Vadai, Poli, Masala Dosai, Bread Omlet, Pakoda,Jangry were favourites. It had a library - you borrow books at full price deposit return and get back. It had SS water containers, tube lights, clean toilets. It was quite shaky at high speeds and cramped for space. Then 16 coaches with 2 YDM 4 A locos but poor response. So two 8 coach trains one Vaigai and one Pallavan Trichy upgraded with one a/c cc. From 1977 to 1992 it was very good with one change to maroun and cream livery and one maroun and white livery. i have travelled over 100 times in MG Vaigai itself in 15 years. Deterioration started with YAM 1 electric loco from VM to MS having delays and last 3 years with gauge conversion it took many time 10 hours, old coaches, dirty and dusty and poor catering. MG Vaigai and Pink City were the fastest MG train that ran at 110 km. Now its all history as Vaigai today is ignored by IR like Brindavan and Kovai. Like or not VB is todays hero - expensive but smooth journey, high tech and just 6 hours. Next is Tejas. But these trains lack history like Vaigai. People used to say Oh Vaigai ya in those days.
