The Mark Knopfler Dire Straights auction is over and HOLY COW did these things fetch amazing prices! I woke up that morning and actually thought I had a chance haha. We will see where these end up - we did get a glimpse of the winning bidder... but he could've been bidding on behalf of someone else

I'm not sure I'd describe the money for nothing riff as "simple" I've never heard anyone play it right!😮
It’s definitely the opposite of a simple riff. Playing for 25 years and it still eludes me.
I certainly can’t!
The thumb skill eludes me
There's an interview of mark floating on youtube where he shows the reporter his hand technique on MFN in slow motion, and it still took me months to get it sounding "close enough". And that's not even including trying to dial in his marshall + half cocked wah guitar tone
Very.
I sold Mark the 2003 Gibson Custom Shop '57 Reissue in Brazilian Blue that you had your eye on. He bought this from me in 2005 along with a minty 1965 Gibson Dove that also sold in this auction ...Needless to say he made quite a return on his investment. That'57 Reissue had a Brazilian Board as well. The finish was like liquid... He e mailed me a couple of times after buying it saying that it was one of his favorite LPs. Needless to say he made quite a return on his initial investment. P.S. Rudy Pensa used to call me "The Other Rudy " LOL.... Thanks for posting !
Must be honest I was surprised at how much the reissue Bursts went for, to the point of wondering if some bidders thought they were genuine 1959 examples.
Talk about being a letdown if they thought they were buying an original 59 burst only to find out it's a reissue!
I doubt they were confused- if you spend that sort of dosh you tend to be buying for two reasons 1- charity donation to write off against tax and 2- Knopfler fanaticism.
I wondered that with the red signature strats that went for £100K! Crazy price for something not that unusual.
more money than brains...
Unlikely there was any confusion there. All very clearly described in the sale catalogue.
Jim Irsay collapsed in December and had to be hospitalized. His rampant drug and alcohol abuse is apparently the cause. I hope he can get help and clean up.
I hadn't heard anything about this - time will tell! He is carrying rock 'n rolls legacy pieces
He didn't collapse, he overdosed again. See my comment above
Word is, they're not going to pull the plug until after the Superbowl.
Dude!? What?!
@chrisholland985 Irsay is likely on life support, a vegetable, his daughter is waiting to pull the plug until after the superbowl. He's been in the hospital for almost 2 months now.
I realised early on when I saw the advert that the only thing I could afford was the catalogue !
One of my favourite songwriters of all time, love him
The button on the Jaguar tremolo is the locking device. If you break a string and lose balance tension, you can flip this and lock the tremolo into t fixed tailpiece FYI
I was never a Dire Straits fan back in the day. However as I got older as a guitar player I came to love Mark Knopflers guitar work.
well....at least you managed to "come round".....eventually.....good on you.
I did.@@stratman9449
I was late picking my wife up at the train station because when I heard "Sultans" on the radio for the first time, I had to pull off the road and just listen. "What in the world is THAT???" A life-changing moment.
I was surprised that the red Schecter and the Pensa Suhr MK1 didn't go for more. Nothing really got that close to Eric Clapton's blackie or David Gilmour's black one so I'm wondering if some winners were prepared to spend more if they really wanted something. Maybe one or two felt like they got a bargain, haha! If I had a bottomless pit of money, I'd have gone for some of those 50s archtops.
@Trogly @8:45 I love it! "After coming off the Knopfler auction everything just seems FREE!" LMAO! ;p
yep...like here...have it....i'll give you 100 bucks if you take it off me.....
Whoever estimated that Les Paul would bring only 10-15,000 pounds is clueless. Like, totally off their rocker. Even if Knopfler merely owned it but didn't play it on a record as iconic as "Brothers in Arms" it would have brought much more than that.
Here in England we were gobsmacked by the prices, no one thought they'd be throwing money like that at the guitars. There were some seriously pissed off people who'd thought they had a chance of something but it was the millionaires club on the telephones, smh.
why are you surprised that it was a millionaires club that was doing the bidding? These guitars were owned by THE Mark Knopfler
$160k for an ovation, yikes lol
Not just any Ovation, Marks ovation..
I got an ovation I'll gladly sale you for half that price. It's even more special than his junk ones
I would never have a delusional thought of bidding in that auction. Even with their ignorant and insulting estimates, it was still shocking that so many guitars went for astronomical prices. Yes, the buyers have to be super-rich folks with money to burn and a desire to show off their MK guitar to their buddies. Even with a good chunk going to charities, it's a little nauseating to have this be a playground for the filthy rich. I feel curious to know who were the main buyers, but if I found out the names, I might really hurl. I did find the auction process kind of entertaining: all those people in the crowd raising numbered paddles, the numerous folks on either side chattering into their phones to take direction from their anonymous bosses, the auctioneer teasing them all and having a good time at the lectern, the bids going up by $10 K or more at a pop, etc.
Money for Nothing with headphones on 11 is a wonderful 4 minutes.
c´mon you are joking right. 10 seconds and it sucks
@@santiagodelmonte2341 check for covid man you seem to have lost taste
@@santiagodelmonte2341 We're sad for you.
I was amazed the 59 didn’t go for more. Considering price Gilmours black strat sold for and 59 is more rare then a strat. I was after the Steinberger, price it went for was crazy.
regarding David G.s black strat...it would seem 2 bidders were hellbent on getting their hands on it.
@@stratman9449 black strat went to the guy that owns an American football team got it then had to bid for the case. He has a huge collection of rockstar guitars.
Hanging onto my firefly 😂
my harley benton is up for £125,000
My friend Mark Pollock (rip) when he used to own Charley’s Guitars and the Dallas guitar show for many years, might have had that guitar for sale in his shop. He definitely had a Gibson CS LP that belonged to Mark K’s brother which had his birthdate for the serial number too. Probably in the early 90’s. Jack Sonni a sideman guitarist for Dire Straits was a guest of the show in 93 I think.
Well Jack Sonni had a Les Paul very similar to Marks second one that had the serial as his birthday, so it’s probably his one. He sold it along with his Steinberger to pay rent. David Knopfler never featured after 1980 in Dire Straits.
@@handle433 interesting. Thank you for the info.
I couldn't believe the prices either
It's mind-boggling how much just Mark's attachment gave value to everything here...
A lot of us outside of Great Britain don't know how important Mark is as a guitar player to them. They told him at the highest level even above Hendrix and Clapton and the other.
I can see him above Hendrix for sure, but on par with Eric maybe. But still, they point of the majority of value just being because he owned them. They iconic ones used in iconic songs I get. But even the gift guitars he had with no provenance other than he owned it adding like 20k of value is wild. I was in the same ballpark as Trogly on expected ranges to see. We both were shocked.
Not really. I mean, if I write my name on a piece of paper, it’s worth nothing.
@@MisterWade74 Sure because you’re worth nothing
@@216trixie Who are you talking about? Are you really that out of touch with the reputation of Mark Knopfler across the globe, not just in Great Britain? You can keep Clapton, I'll take MK anytime. Clapton is a master craftsman on the guitar, whereas Mark is an artist whose expressiveness and story telling on the guitar is far superior.
MFN is not a simple lick. I dare you to play it (correctly) live during a guitar documenting....
Simple in the fact that it isn't overly complicated to hear and sing. Playing it is a whole different story. The general public loves the riff and can hum it, unlike a Dragonforce solo
That retainer on the Surf Green Jag is called a "BuzzStop". I have one on my '07 AVRI Jazzmaster, now strung with .009s. The break angle was so slight that it was unplayable even with .010s, but the BuzzStop generates enough downforce on the bridge saddles that the strings won't jump out even under hard picking. I have an AVRI Jaguar (in Shell Pink, no less!) strung with .010s due to the shorter scale. No BuzzStop needed. I'd bet that Mark has .009s on the Surf Green Jag and would have needed the BuzzStop.
It simply locks the trem on jags
A lot of people don't realize how important Mark knopfler is as a guitar player to Great Britain. The English consider him tops, above pretty much everyone.
Not just the UK !
I’m English I don’t
Theres always one. @@tkffin
@@tkffin nor me !!
@@tkffin Then you were young. If you were older you would know how it was admired as the top of the heap in the 80s in the 90s and beyond.
Austin..I lived 6 miles from the Kennewick WA. MUSIC MACHINE! I still own two guitars purchased from there..what a glorious time..
I lived less than that away from it, and its where I used to go stare at the brand new 1984 Gibson Designer Series V's and Explorers when I was 13. I'd walk down Kennewick Ave at least once a week to go stare at the guitars. My first guitar from there: a 1984 Gibson Explorer in ebony. Wish I still had it!
@JokersWild70 the MM famous guitars we're NOT from the 80's but late nineties/early 2000's..but nonetheless, they were still the MM! YES, Dave Carpenter turned that small shop into Gibson royalty for approximately a decade. He took me across the street a couple times where he had a vintage amplifier collection that would blow your mind! I'm from Richland, have been purchasing from them since 1978..well, my parents did then for me! I'm now 61 years old. Was sad to see it go...
@@barrymiller2272 I didn't even realize it wasn't there any longer, but I no longer live in the Tri Cities either. I cant believe it's been 40 years ago that this 53 year old used to stare at the guitars in there. I loved that white V with the blue splatter on it. That was cool for that period in time. I remember they also got that crazy looking Roland synth guitar in either late '84 or at some point in '85. Definitely got some bizarre sounds out of it
@JokersWild70 so cool to share history with you! I wasn't downplaying your Explorer by any means. We were lucky to have had it there! God, if I new then what I know now about guitars I would have ten of them laying around! Dave always gave me free credit! He took the wife & I down in the basement and showed us 2 signed Jimmy Page RI's...about blew my mind! Good times...cheers!🤘🤘
STOP saying ”BROTHER in Arms”!
amazing prices for some amazing items. Worth every penny
Trogly, I'd probably wait till the black Friday sale! Lol.
How much for a pick? 😂😂
7000... 9000 usd
pack of 10 for 10k....haha.....
Given he’s a finger picker I’m guessing they would be even rarer than the 59 LP!
Didn’t David Gilmour donated 100% to charity?
My faves of Mark's were those Super 400s and that metallic green 60s Jaguar. Also really liked that CME powder blue SG
I just had a look and literally the only thing that didn't totally obliterate the estimates was a double bass, and even that went for a good 50% over high estimate
I bet Ted Nugent’s crying, his eyes out. His auction didn’t get anywhere close to what these guitars got.
Ted Nugent is one of these guys that got really big in the US only. In Europe hardly anybody even heard about him.
Mark is a couple of levels above him.
Yeah but wait’til he auctions off his guns, knives and Playboy collections.
Money for Nothing is incredibly hard to get right and kinda easy to play kinda right
Those guitar price reminded me to get a lotto ticket tonight 🤪
Ironic that the ‘money for nothin’ guitar went for so much more than it’s worth.
Life imitating art
ironic indeed.....
It’s worth what someone will pay for it.
It's worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it and will only go up in value .All these guitars no matter how expensive are investments .
@@Dave062YTThe burst at 550,000 is an investment.
The ‘money for nothin’ guitar at 470,000 is not. The same guitar, but without any provenance, can cost 10,000-30,000 depending on condition & originality.
When his legion of fans are dead and gone, (not a huge length of time), it wouldn’t fetch much more than regular market price.
Was the steel guitar on the album cover of Brothers In Arm there?
It's a 1995 replica he took on tour since then. He's keeping the original one (and the Sultans strato).
No, hes keeping the original national.
No
@@igor5041 I didn't see the white "Bug" Strat there either.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver Yeah, there's that, a bunch of other Schecters (like the red Dream Machine), etc. But I'm not sure if he's keeping those or he doesn't own them anymore. For example, the Schecter sunburst he used to play Tunnel of Love in the early 80's was auctioned in the 2000's and the money donated to Clapton's Crossroads Center.
I went the day before the auction and got interested on the 51' D 28. Christie's team was super nice to let me some 10-20 minutes on the test room to enjoy the guitar. I had a 20k€ budget as well, that within 10 seconds, crashed my dream of having that non-famous MK guitar, only purchased a couple of years ago and named to have been used on the recording of 1 track.
Baby Driver did a great job holding those guitars.
Evening all!!!
The Czech bass was designed that way for portability and air travel. My bass player has one.
I saw these, I can't believe Christies estimated them so low. Were they drunk? Did they let the work experience kid who'd never heard of Mark Knopfler or Dire Straits do it? Seriously WTF was up with the estimates?
5:42 I thought Mark had a Steinberger, and there it is. Nearly £70k. Original 80s Steinbergers in good condition are getting rarer now and attracting some hairy prices.
I participated in the auction as well. I bid 35,000 GBP to try and ensure I got the Money For Nothin' LP.........lol nope
Reminds me of the old story of Picasso taking all his buds out for a slap up meal, then paying for it all with a signature and a doodle. MK walks into any guitar store, buys one, plays it in public or on a track then sells it for a huge profit !
The 83' was also the guitar used to record Brothers and Arms not just MFN. Featured at Live Aid also. The 1985 'birth date LP' is wired out of phase in middle position I believe.
Pity he didn't have some picks for sale. I might have had a chance.
Rich people and their tax launderin what the absolute shit
exactly
At least they could just stick to buying 'art', and leave the guitars to people who will actually appreciate them!
@@StreetPreacherr
People who would “appreciate them” had the same opportunity to buy them.
If they were going to guitar players, they would’ve been sold at a guitar shop, not an auction house.
That ain’t workin’.
Trogly thinking he'd have a shot at some of those LP's is actually mental. Lol.
For people interested in non-Gibsons there was probably a record price for a Teisco. One of the Spectrum 5s got $47K. That Schecter Tele was probably also a record for a Schecter at $525K
i gotchyou Trogly, my Gibson USA 50's mod looks just like that, nice red on the burst and great top, i will take the 20k for it!
The 2023 Les Paul standard R9's have already seen a bump in price here in the UK! £5500 up to about just under £10k
The shock to me was a Watkins rapier 33, from my memory they cost 33 pounds new and this one sold for thousands
Was the Les Paul estate auction to early for you in your career?
The Christie’s 🎸 auction catalogue itself is a very cool item, and sure to go up in value.
Got the JTM45 auctioned, still a big hole in the bank account but happy with this. Used on ragpickers dream album, one more matinee and quite probably get lucky album. Got some comment from Guy Fletcher too about this purchase, which is a super cool bonus 😎
Least I am not alone with my meager "surely I can get something" stake!
I wondered which one you would get! Watched the whole thing.
Yup, thought I had a chance for a few weeks, until I saw your pre-auction video and a commenter mentioned the auction house “estimates” were massive lowball figures. If it seems too good to be true…it is. I thank you at least for softening the blow - once I knew I had zero chance of winning anything, I actually enjoyed watching the auction.
Yeah you and me both. If I hadn't pre-bid on it I wouldn't even have a bid on record LOL.
Money for something! And lots of it.
I think it would be interesting to know what guitars Mark still has.
The estimate compared the the actuals ong lol
Thanks again for another great video
Never thought I'd see a 90s ES-135 go for $50,000.
I was wondering about those auctions!
I'm surprised at what prices all of these brought but im especially surprised the Schecter garnered as much as it did.
Bid like you did and.... went home with my catalogue...:)
Why anyone would pay those prices for these guitars is unimaginable, they really are not remotely historic for the most part, just some Gibson reissues. No way the value will ever appreciate from those prices.
Um maybe each person will, er, keep and play the guitar they purchased?
Did you ever see the Alex Lifeson auction a year or so back? I don’t think i ever saw a video on it
I think there are a bunch of ETFs and financial products designed around holding non-fungible items and collectibles - it basically means a regular collector has no hope since they will endlessly drive the prices up and then use the expansion of such funds to elevate valuations. Eventually they’ll go bankrupt when other funds reach valuation limits and they can’t create cash, but probably not any time soon.
Those mad auction prices seem to be an awful lot of money for nothing Austin....😉
I have a Jackson King V with dot inlay (factory). This is just odd for a Jackson. It isnt one of the cheapy ones either, they put the fins on pretty much everything so a dot inlay is actually pretty rare for Jackson, lol.
Gibson is chomping at the bit. Knopfler reissues forthcoming.
Surprising that Inverness Green went so high, not nearly as known as "money".
Will my Inverness Studio go up in value? haha. Ü ♫
a reissue of an early prehistoric would be fun but they'd probably botch it and make it just like a regular R9 haha
It's great that public interest was served a little out of this billionaire splurge on so called legacy guitars, by charity donations. But I wonder whether any of these instruments will ever see light of day once in these collections. It's entirely at the whim of collectors whether they will. There was a time something as notorious as the Money Les Paul might be displayed in pubic museums for everyones access all the time, but everything is privatized now and the ante is very high.
For me it was the Pensa Suhr MK1 that was most surprising: I thought that would be the guitar to steal the show.
It’s simple to play it incorrectly and complicated to play it as Mark did
Woooo, crazy prices ! 😆
Yes i have see the Auction, and i was Chancesless.
You ar not the only One.
Ooo no. Sad that it is going to collectors not musicians b
You need to review one of those older Schecter guitars. Nothing to do with the current company.
Trogly's 🤩
When David Gilmour did his auction, he had a left handed black strat! Obviously he never played the damn thing. They estimated to bring anywhere between $4800 to $8000. I placed a bid for $10000! It sold for $52000! I mean come on!
Whoa
wow...i watched some of this auction at christies of Marks guitars......i'm still reeling from it......there deffo is too much money around for some to splash out for (admittedly) some great guitars....but hey.....i'll stick to my own "price" league....better safe than sorry....
Could the natural SG be a red one that's just completely faded out? I remember seeing an early '60s that I was sure was natural until I saw under the pickguard, but maybe that didn't happen with the late '70s finishes.
There must have been like a 3000% buyers premium on these items with those final prices. Anyone know what the premium was set at?
26% buyers premium
I'd like to see how much Christies made and how much Mark actually got back.
Man… Mark had a lot of nice guitars, but I didn’t see a single The Hawk model anywhere 🤔
Wow. 😮
A fun one to watch but not as a participant in bidding. Super overpriced across the board!
Was way off the charts,,,,,
My original guitar teacher, back in 1995, when I first started playing (Shame I never practiced and wouldn't actually get serious till 2018) looked a lot like Mark Knopfler. He had a light green strat. And I remember the fretboard was so worn in. You know those maple fretboards when the finish wears off. I used to wonder how long it would take for my Peavy to look like that. If i actually practiced back then I might have found out. The good news is I'm a daily player now and still actually remember some of the things he taught me.
Hey there
Wow 🙈
I learned one thing rich people are totally insane overpaying for guitars
I should show it to my wife that…well…maybe…who knows…my reissues and Schecters and so forth might be worth millions…theoretically
Z is for late.
insane........
I hope some these guitars are still played. I know they probably aren’t but they deserve to be.
Will you ever review a Tokai or a Greco`?
