They should have just started over entirely with their own story and left Anthony and Ann-Marie out! It could have just been a struggling black artist AN ARTIST just like the previous Candyman and we could have began from there !🤦🏾♀️ Trying to tie up all the loose ends was clearly too much to handle 😳

Thank you for making a fair review. As a white person I thought the movie was offensive. In the original film. Candyman killed both white and black people. Because he wasn’t racially motivated. His motivation for killing was to preserve his own legend thus preserving his soul. Yes their was some racial aspects to the story but it was about more than that. It was also a tragic love story. The new one had none of that. All I got from it was. As you said. “White people bad, black people good”

I don't necessarily hate it, but it just didn't make sense. The multiples doesn't make sense in the story, and they still tried to connect it. The message was too heavy handed, and they had the same gentrification conversation with every white character. The third act came completely out of left field. Anthony's descent was handled sloppily. There was the backstory with Teyonna, that was so unexplored they should've left it on the cutting room floor.
Honestly.. that plot isn't even new anymore.. what they could have done, if they wanted to do this crap.. was the 'white' knights high jacking blm and the blm race grifters .. now that would have been fresh. Cause we know.. nothing saves these places.. because you have too many people corrupted asf .. and those that get out.. leave and never return.. they don't 'give back" to the commmunity - kinda like the main characters in this movie. Eh I sort of figured the multiples would be a thing considering how Helen herself turned into a Candyman or a version of some sort at the end of the original film. I think they could have done more with the film but it sort of feels like they’re setting this up for a sequel or two? Who knows because if that movie is all that there is they could have just kept it.
The trailer gave away the whole plot of the movie. I knew immediately after watching the trailer that the main character(Anthony) was going to turn into Candyman just like Helen. Uh Duh!!!
If you rewatch the 1992 version, you'll notice most of kills are off screen as well. You just see the aftermath of it. The new one is a disappointment. It had potential, but the ball was dropped. The racial tension was subtle in the original. It's beaten over your head in the new one.
I really appreciate your perspective on this - especially about the lack of horror and tension, which is spot on. For me the problem overall is just that the protagonist had no sense of agency at all. It also set up a boogeyman that made no sense for this story in particular - gentrification doesn't displace a community into one place, it breaks it up. There was no community left in Cabrini Green, therefore no 'congregation' to create the Candyman. In the first movie, the Candyman was the embodiment of the prejudices and social ills that killed him, that trap people in places like the projects, hence why he preys on the poor residents who have been abandoned by the police and society. It has a message about how being oppressed and mistreated causes a psychological trap that only hurts the very community most affected, perpetuating the harm in a cycle of horror. It's why, when Helen takes his power by making the community believe she killed him in the bonfire, she comes back just as destructive when summoned. This new version missed all of that nuance completely and went for cartoonish characters and just no feeling of realism. Such a disappointment! Also agree that Vanessa Williams was wasted, just as much as Tony Todd was - her scene was the ONLY part of the movie I actually felt something in.
What I didn't understand is how ANTHONY never was questioned by police of all the deaths. And what was the point of seeing the girl's father committing suicide?and waiting to the end for Tony Todd was a slap in the face. This should had been titled a different name kinda like that last Child's play movie should had also been titled different.

The whole movie was just random scenes of stuff happening. There was absolutely no narrative here. *Insert scene of white girls bullying black girl and then getting killed* *Insert scene of guy jumping out window*(who even was that????) Even the paintings were pointless, wtf was going on?
I had read somewhere that the director, Nia DaCosta had written a lot of the screenplay originally and then Jordan Peele came in and pretty much rewrote the whole thing. It would be interesting to see the differences between the two screenplays.
Unlike most I didnt care much for us, it is extremely overrated, nothing about it put me at the edge of my seat. Now youve mentioned him rewriting, make me give it a 7 from 8 or 9. Creative control is very important. With that being said she could of kept Peel the hell out.

I heard about the leaks and idk why I allowed positive reviews to make me think they changed it and even had a chance at bringing out SOME of what the original had. I should’ve known this would be terrible because they only took like 2 months to shoot it…big giveaway. Terrible pacing, not scary, and completely throws away the ending that Helen became a Candyman spirit herself because she’s not black. And YES, this should not have Candyman’s name attached to it, the name was just used as a pilot for the political agenda. It could’ve just been its own movie.

What they did to Domingo’s character was terrible he could have had his own film with the story he had. Anthony being an artist and Tony Todd’s Candyman being an artist there could have been a connection there, and the relationship between him and his mother could have been its own thing, like…it has so many good angles but the execution was just…weird.
Based on reshoots and early casting news - my theory is they cast Coleman Domingo as Candyman but got hesitant and shoehorned him in as William at some point. I say this because Jake from the 1992 version would’ve made more sense as someone connected to the old legend. This is how I know they had their own agenda and didn’t want to connect the original and this one as intended. Remember, the Anthony character was suppose to be LaKeith Stanfield, who is very problematic, but would’ve been better in the role, imo. This was so damn disappointing. I can literally write a better film than this, and I don’t mean any disrespect. They wrote this like they took threads from Twitter or rooms from Clubhouse on surface level social issues and put it alongside Candyman. Sloppily done. You can’t call yourself telling Cabrini Green’s story without highlighting the most tragic stories, including Ruthie Jean and Little Girl X. The tragedies and atrocities of that neighborhood were not to be overlooked for the sake of wanting to appear deep. This is where 1992 got it right. It wasn’t just about white being goofy and bad vs. black being smart and cautious. It very much made Helen, Ann Marie, and Cabrini and main character of the story.
I walked out of the movie and chalked it down as a loss. I watched all the candyman movies I grew up on them. I understand the message they were trying to send with the film but I'm sure everyone understands the injustice done to black people it just doesn't belong in a horror movie like candyman. I expected some of that narrative but it hit you in the face constantly through out the movie. I'm really mad as a fan of the franchise I grew up on those films! They need to keep politics out of movies in general in my opinion.

I could look and listen to you all day. You hit every nail on the head. I went to watch the Candyman with 3 others and this video is basically the conversation on the way home in the car after watching the movie.
Non-spoiler first impressions. Initial reaction: Definitely not as good as good as the original, but as a direct sequel the story is respectful. Also, Tony Todd is the true Candyman and you feel his absence in this Pros: - Story as a continuation of the original made sense and respected the original Clive Barker mythos. - For those unfortunate to put Candymans name in their mouth 5 times in a mirror, it made for some excellent and extra bloody gore that I always appreciate in horror - Main characters were written well and made you stay invested in the story - There is some excellent body horror in this almost akin to Jeff Goldblumes early stages of changing into "The Fly" which is sure to gross everyone out Cons: - Too short. Kind of rushes to the end just as things start ramping up more on the third act. At 90min probably could have done with an extra 30min to flesh out the excitement and pacing - Not scary, but more of a thriller. This is not that bad of a thing though but its definitely different - While still very brutal, the kills are not as impactful as the original. Original has Candyman speaking in a ghastly voice (Bane style with his voice higher than everything else) narrating to people as he murders them. Also the slow ripping sound of the hook which also is over all the other sound is not used. - A bit too heavy at times on social issue messages. Maybe for some people this info is informative but as a black person it comes off as "preaching to the choir" of things we are well aware of in our society. I don't want to hear this stuff this much in a horror movie I am trying to escape from reality in.
After watching this and Lovecraft Country I am officially boycotting Jordan Peele. This guy just can't make anything that doesn't involve racial division. Edit Also, you're right about Anthony McCoy. He wasn't likable. He came off as a selfish jerk. He didn't care that his art was connected to the brutal murders. All he cared about was his art was mentioned. It would have been interesting if he turns mad because of his guilt being associated and trying desperately to stop Candyman.

This had the potential to tell a captivating story yet they decided to convolute an already clear story. I’ll have to watch the original and rewatch this one. But I want to see another movie with Yahya and Teyonna, their chemistry was great.
Her decomposed body was in the church at the end while that psycho dude was performing that ritual on Anthony ..she was a “witness”… he actually dug her up at sat her in the pews!! To me that was the creepiest shit ever!!
I called it. After I saw the first trailer and saw who was producing this movie - I knew it was going to be a woke nightmare. Candyman is a great film (1992), Tony Todd was amazing and even created the background of the character. The new film, like you said, is a cash cow - an attempt to feed off the anger and frustration of an entire race, and that's pathetic. You can have your message, hell the original Candyman spoke about race and class perfect and managed to scare the hell out of people. This one? Horrible. And a waste and totally killed the Candyman franchise more than Candyman 3. Good review! Really enjoyed it.
I haven’t seen this movie, but I’ll tell you this, the 1992 original was amazing! The movie honestly scared me !!! The way Tony Todd would say “Helen” brought me chills… now hearing your review I’m like fuck this gonna turn in the original since it’s on Netflix !

Why would you want to bring an older Tony Todd back as Candyman? He should be left alone in the three prior movies he had. I think that’s where they messed up with the original, having his face so boldly broadcast. It left no room for future character development, but somehow they figured out how to stretch the story. Unlike Freddy, leather face, Michael Myers who all covered their faces or had prosthetic pieces, Candyman the spirit wouldn’t have made sense him being older. Spirits don’t age the way we age. They tried their hardest with the de-aging feature and… is that REALLY what y’all want? A CGI version of Tony Todd for multiple films? Todd had his time. Move on.
Tony Todd is old and if you watch his interviews he loves the love he gets from the movie but he's ready to move on, Yahya will be a great replacement 👍 I enjoy movies especially horrors that have something to talk about, I thought it was better than the original

Just another movie with a political agenda. a movie made to make white people feel like they are horrible people and should repent in some way. That is the movie. I loved your take! A few things I can say is that this movie gave you no one to connect to, no one to feel sorry for. Everything is so rushed and so very forced! The original Candyman is legendary because of Tony Todd’s monologues, and the fact that the movie allows for you to understand Candyman beyond his doings but his feelings as well. This new movie does not show those things, there was an extreme lack of Candyman. I need a redo!!

Jorda Peele is a raging white hater and it shows. He also completely misunderstood Candyman. Candyman was not somesort of anti hero and shits. He was a murderous ghost, who does it only to maintain his soul, his legend. His tragic origin deals with slavery, racism of a very old times, yet, none of those matter to him anymore because he became a monster and lost every bits of humanity he had left. He never seek vengeance or justice, he only loves to kill. And all of these made him so great, because he unapologetically evil and strikes fear into your mind everytime you use your mirror.
I'm with you on the original, love it. CREEPED. ME. OUT. This sequel though, I don't know. It tried but SMH. If you're gonna make a political point, fine make it bc the original did. If you're making a horror, make it the original was. But if you're gonna combine them, you'd better know how to write it. The original Candyman put a bit of focus on economics, BUT it didn't overshadow him as it shouldn't. Too much political stuff can overshadow the main story. This sequel had its moments of potential but , but doesn't measure up to the original.
I personally believe that Universal delayed the film not just because of COVID-19 but because the last thing they wanted was to add fuel to the fire because of the riots and the BLM protest. But the reason the ending left a bad taste in my mouth is because a couple weeks ago, Ella French, a Chicago Police Officer came back to the force from maternity leave, was shot and killed by two brothers who had an illegal gun and drunk. Look I get there are crooked cops but not every police officers are bad, but turning Candyman into an Anti-Hero and killing cops is not what he is, they ruined him.

Another funny thing about all of this… The original Clive Barker Candyman was actually white and the story took place in London. Candyman was simply a spirit that killed for disbelief, didn’t even have the mirror or name chanting involved. Rose brilliantly added it to give him a SLIGHT backstory and because he had to actually make a MOVIE out of the short story. The part about Daniel being a slave was actually beyond revenge; it was used to tell a tragic love story and gothic romance (so deep that it is actually scary at the same time).
Right, the whole “revenge” concept is completely antithetical to the character’s motivation. Candyman kills indiscriminately, to fuel his legend. Yes his backstory may be tragic, but he has moved beyond the concept of race. It’s hard to tell whether he’s still Daniel Robitille or something different entirely. That’s what makes the original so telling. He is otherworldly and detached. Clive Barker’s Candyman is ethereal and so random. You know nothing about him and he shows up at the very end of the story. Rose introduced a rather tragic but subtle background to the character. It was a tell of racism, but that’s not the main theme. The main theme throughout is the impact that racism has on society and how it effects everyone indiscriminately.

As a black person I can honestly say, if I would've read the review that said this before I watched this movie, I wouldn't have went to see it: "DaCosta cleverly refines and develops Candyman as the expression of rage against racism in the era of Black Lives Matter, a supernaturally weaponised scream against Jim Crow and its aftermath; her film investigates Candyman as a symptom of inequality and bad housing (symbolically emerging from a broken interior wall) and the consequent phenomenon of gentrification." -Peter Bradshaw The whole movie was just "white people are bad and they need to know it". I hated it so much. I told my sister when we went that I just hated the constant social justice, black inequality and oppression references of the film and the constant pitting of blacks against whites. It wasn't anything like the original, in my opinion. WAY too much "political correctness", I didn't enjoy it. It was just so....boring, trying to be "woke", irritating, "white people suck and black people don't" trash. The fact that she called on Candyman in the end to come and pretty much save her...I just---no. He killed all the white people, then gave this small speech about how the cops or white people in general were looked at as innocent, but weren't. So stupid. Candyman says "Say my name", BLM says "Say their names". Garbage film that just sucked so hard. Hated it.

OH! I just noticed in that screenshot of Coleman Domingo's character reading a Clive Barker book - haha That was kinda cool - a nod to Barker's short story, which was the inspiration for the original Candyman movie. Evereything you said about his character is exactly what I thought as well.

Movie was a disaster. It’s so woke from start to finish. From a gay interracial couple to a dying man being shot right beside a civilian. Things in the movie was so forced just to further an already weak plot.

I thought I was the only one who didn’t like this movie. When the ending came around I was just like 😐😐😐😐. I wanted a straight horror movie staring Black people, not a social justice film. And the way the relationship was portrayed didn’t sit right with me. The black woman who came from trauma taking care of another black mans trauma. And Tony Todd was barely in it at all until the end. They could have done so much more with this film but it just came across as a “gentrification is bad” movie that was very in the nose.
I think he was barely in it because they had to deage him just to make him look like he did back in the day. Although he looked artificial as hell. Tony Todd has aged really well but you can tell he’s older and we all know ghosts don’t age. They probably didn’t have the funds to have him deaged for a longer period of time.
I love the original Candyman! So I tried to watch this new movie on Amazon Prime, but I gave up after 10 minutes and the umpteenth time someone said “white people bad”! And not because I happen to be white, but because I’d hate to see this done with any other race/color, call it what you like. I stand with MLK Junior and his message. Dividing people into good and bad isn’t healthy. You want to watch a horror movie about racial injustice, watch “12 years a slave”. That’ll give you nightmares. Why? Because it punches you in the stomach, because it was made with the right intentions. But nowadays, too many film and TV makers come along with a political agenda that feels forced and disingenuous. I neither want to see another token gay or black for comic relief, nor am I interested in some political message. I can put on the news for that. Just write some interesting characters, no matter what they look like, and give them a good story.
I think my biggest issue was the way all the initial rules of "Candyman" were thrown out in the last scene. Why are we all of a sudden able to see him outside of the mirror? Why did he begin killing a police officer that had nothing to do with the summoning? Idk.. it was a beautifully shot movie but when you think about it, that was about all it gave.
I was hyped for this movie at first but the more TV spots I saw from it the more it worried me, especially with it showing that it was going to overdue the political message it was trying to convey in it's story. I'm still going to see it cause I love the original, but I'm not going into this as hyped as I was last year.
Totally agree with your review because I said some of the same things to my friends after it was over. I feel like if they had to do a different version of Candyman I would have rather seen the teenage version.

I could take the script and make a more effective movie just as good as the first one. With the same material. 1. Anthony is looking for new material for his gallery and looks into the Helen Lyle story from his GFs brother. 2. After some digging he finds out he's the baby from the story by his mom. This happens in the beginning of the film which causes him to look deeper into what happened and meets Burke. In turn finding about the Candyman legend. 3. He creates his gallery and during those weeks he begins having dreams of the victims of the past along with the voice of Daniel Robatille. 4. During the night of the gallery a few Out of touch critics and attendees say the name completely while there and start turning up dead. Anthony being the subject of suspicion and harassment by police. 5. In the ongoing weeks Anthony gradually mentally and physically deteriorates and more murders happen. Causing Brianna to leave as he gets more unstable. 6. He searches for a way to stop this and goes back to Burke who has been secretly an agent of Candyman's or the swarm's supernatural influence (it's hinted in the original film that he can hypnotize ppl like Helen). 7. Brianna's worrying about Anthony causes her to look for him not knowing police are tailing her. By the time she finds Burke who has already set up Anthony as the killer. Just as Burke is about to hurt Brianna, Anthony kills Burke with the hook instead. 8. When all seems calm, officers/detectives from early on in the film see Anthony standing over a dead Burke and shoots him. Causing the tragic end for our protagonist. The final scene plays out except now we get a longer scene of Anthony morphing into Daniel Robatille much Earlier since his soul is now Assimilated into the Hive.
Gonna make this my headcanon for what happens within the events of this film. Leaving loose ends entirely unexplained and acting like they're tied up is something that annoyed the fuck out of me in this movie, it was made all the worse towards the end when it falls apart and just seems to be swinging for left field just because.
Jordan Peele is like the M. Knight Shyamalan of woke plot twists. Except Shyamalan makes original content. Peele is 3 for 3 in remakes (Get Out was a remake of Skeleton Key, Us was an adaptation of Mirror Image, and now Candyman)

I watched the movie yesterday, you are on point with your video, this was a woke movie disguised as a horror movie, it was more of a political statement than a horror slasher. "White poeple bad, black people good". I'm not white nor black, but even I could see that wokeness bs in this movie. I love horror movies but this was more of a propaganda movie for a group's beliefs that feels out of place. It's good to see more people are fed up with wokeness bs messing with their entertainment.

I finally got around to watching this movie today and I couldnt get past the first 15min! More woke garbage from hollywood that no one asked for. You were right calling this movie trash because thats exactly what it was.
" Woke trash" *laughing*. They loaded the movie with social themes and reminded you of them every scene. I saw 3 black men with their white girlfriends, wives or whatever. Wonder how they felt watching the movie. I get what the metaphors and how artsy the movie was, but with different hands in the project, they couldn't really be clear on what they was trying to get across with the characters and the direction of the story. This movie will leave alot of people confused and wishing it was on HBO max instead of waisting gas to go see it. To me, a waist of $16.33.
Billy’s line in the new version about the cops showing up when the victim is white echos a scene in the original by Helen after she’s attacked in the gents by the hoodlums, which brings attention to the police. Candyman 92 is a traditional horror flick though, ‘cause this sub-genre of horror was still popular in the 80s/90s. There was also media appetite at the time for serial killers Bundy, Dahmer, Nightstalker etc, who had just been put on the chair, were still committing their crimes or were on trial. CM21’s boogeymen being the cop replacing the serial killer is because that’s what’s in the news now, also, the first film, as great as it is, is a “white” horror film and Nia DaCosta wanted to make a “Black” one, similar to the original Django film and Tarantino’s update. The only slaying in the new film that didn’t fit the narrative for me was the white teens in the locker room. I’m guessing this scene was included to scare white girls in the audience who will make up a large percentage of the crowd, but the killings of the art critics and cops made more sense to me. Still enjoyed the movie, but I understand those whose opinion differs to mine.
Last thing I wanna say is why didn't they just have Yaya play a young Candyman before he was dead then we can see what happened to him and that's where you can work in the themes of racism

In the original film.
Candyman killed both white and black people. Because he wasn’t racially motivated.
His motivation for killing was to preserve his own legend thus preserving his soul.
Yes their was some racial aspects to the story but it was about more than that.
It was also a tragic love story.
The new one had none of that.

I don't necessarily hate it, but it just didn't make sense. The multiples doesn't make sense in the story, and they still tried to connect it. The message was too heavy handed, and they had the same gentrification conversation with every white character. The third act came completely out of left field. Anthony's descent was handled sloppily. There was the backstory with Teyonna, that was so unexplored they should've left it on the cutting room floor.
Honestly.. that plot isn't even new anymore.. what they could have done, if they wanted to do this crap.. was the 'white' knights high jacking blm and the blm race grifters .. now that would have been fresh. Cause we know.. nothing saves these places.. because you have too many people corrupted asf .. and those that get out.. leave and never return.. they don't 'give back" to the commmunity - kinda like the main characters in this movie. But they'll use that community to stay a victim and benifit off of the race card even though they are beyond sucessful and dont' gaf about black on black violence..
Eh I sort of figured the multiples would be a thing considering how Helen herself turned into a Candyman or a version of some sort at the end of the original film. I think they could have done more with the film but it sort of feels like they’re setting this up for a sequel or two? Who knows because if that movie is all that there is they could have just kept it.
The trailer gave away the whole plot of the movie. I knew immediately after watching the trailer that the main character(Anthony) was going to turn into Candyman just like Helen. Uh Duh!!!

If you rewatch the 1992 version, you'll notice most of kills are off screen as well. You just see the aftermath of it. The new one is a disappointment. It had potential, but the ball was dropped. The racial tension was subtle in the original. It's beaten over your head in the new one.
Candyman 2 he did kill kill on screen
I really appreciate your perspective on this - especially about the lack of horror and tension, which is spot on. For me the problem overall is just that the protagonist had no sense of agency at all. It also set up a boogeyman that made no sense for this story in particular - gentrification doesn't displace a community into one place, it breaks it up. There was no community left in Cabrini Green, therefore no 'congregation' to create the Candyman.
In the first movie, the Candyman was the embodiment of the prejudices and social ills that killed him, that trap people in places like the projects, hence why he preys on the poor residents who have been abandoned by the police and society. It has a message about how being oppressed and mistreated causes a psychological trap that only hurts the very community most affected, perpetuating the harm in a cycle of horror. It's why, when Helen takes his power by making the community believe she killed him in the bonfire, she comes back just as destructive when summoned.
This new version missed all of that nuance completely and went for cartoonish characters and just no feeling of realism. Such a disappointment! Also agree that Vanessa Williams was wasted, just as much as Tony Todd was - her scene was the ONLY part of the movie I actually felt something in.
What I didn't understand is how ANTHONY never was questioned by police of all the deaths. And what was the point of seeing the girl's father committing suicide?and waiting to the end for Tony Todd was a slap in the face. This should had been titled a different name kinda like that last Child's play movie should had also been titled different.
Yes! I would off excepted the police talking to the gf or going to question to mom to get more time with Vanessa Williams! The police not believing Helen was a big part of the first film it would of flawlessly fit in here ! 🤦🏾♀️

I had read somewhere that the director, Nia DaCosta had written a lot of the screenplay originally and then Jordan Peele came in and pretty much rewrote the whole thing. It would be interesting to see the differences between the two screenplays.
Unlike most I didnt care much for us, it is extremely overrated, nothing about it put me at the edge of my seat. Now youve mentioned him rewriting, make me give it a 7 from 8 or 9. Creative control is very important. With that being said she could of kept Peel the hell out.
Maybe we'll see a Snyder like version of the original.

I should’ve known this would be terrible because they only took like 2 months to shoot it…big giveaway. Terrible pacing, not scary, and completely throws away the ending that Helen became a Candyman spirit herself because she’s not black.
And YES, this should not have Candyman’s name attached to it, the name was just used as a pilot for the political agenda. It could’ve just been its own movie.

What they did to Domingo’s character was terrible he could have had his own film with the story he had.
Anthony being an artist and Tony Todd’s Candyman being an artist there could have been a connection there, and the relationship between him and his mother could have been its own thing, like…it has so many good angles but the execution was just…weird.
I thought it would have had something to do with all the honey he feed him as a child
Based on reshoots and early casting news - my theory is they cast Coleman Domingo as Candyman but got hesitant and shoehorned him in as William at some point. I say this because Jake from the 1992 version would’ve made more sense as someone connected to the old legend. This is how I know they had their own agenda and didn’t want to connect the original and this one as intended. Remember, the Anthony character was suppose to be LaKeith Stanfield, who is very problematic, but would’ve been better in the role, imo. This was so damn disappointing. I can literally write a better film than this, and I don’t mean any disrespect. They wrote this like they took threads from Twitter or rooms from Clubhouse on surface level social issues and put it alongside Candyman. Sloppily done. You can’t call yourself telling Cabrini Green’s story without highlighting the most tragic stories, including Ruthie Jean and Little Girl X. The tragedies and atrocities of that neighborhood were not to be overlooked for the sake of wanting to appear deep. This is where 1992 got it right. It wasn’t just about white being goofy and bad vs. black being smart and cautious. It very much made Helen, Ann Marie, and Cabrini and main character of the story.

I walked out of the movie and chalked it down as a loss. I watched all the candyman movies I grew up on them. I understand the message they were trying to send with the film but I'm sure everyone understands the injustice done to black people it just doesn't belong in a horror movie like candyman. I expected some of that narrative but it hit you in the face constantly through out the movie. I'm really mad as a fan of the franchise I grew up on those films! They need to keep politics out of movies in general in my opinion.

Non-spoiler first impressions.
Initial reaction: Definitely not as good as good as the original, but as a direct sequel the story is respectful. Also, Tony Todd is the true Candyman and you feel his absence in this
Pros:
- Story as a continuation of the original made sense and respected the original Clive Barker mythos.
- For those unfortunate to put Candymans name in their mouth 5 times in a mirror, it made for some excellent and extra bloody gore that I always appreciate in horror
- Main characters were written well and made you stay invested in the story
- There is some excellent body horror in this almost akin to Jeff Goldblumes early stages of changing into "The Fly" which is sure to gross everyone out
Cons:
- Too short. Kind of rushes to the end just as things start ramping up more on the third act. At 90min probably could have done with an extra 30min to flesh out the excitement and pacing
- Not scary, but more of a thriller. This is not that bad of a thing though but its definitely different
- While still very brutal, the kills are not as impactful as the original. Original has Candyman speaking in a ghastly voice (Bane style with his voice higher than everything else) narrating to people as he murders them. Also the slow ripping sound of the hook which also is over all the other sound is not used.
- A bit too heavy at times on social issue messages. Maybe for some people this info is informative but as a black person it comes off as "preaching to the choir" of things we are well aware of in our society. I don't want to hear this stuff this much in a horror movie I am trying to escape from reality in.
After watching this and Lovecraft Country I am officially boycotting Jordan Peele. This guy just can't make anything that doesn't involve racial division.

Also, you're right about Anthony McCoy. He wasn't likable. He came off as a selfish jerk. He didn't care that his art was connected to the brutal murders. All he cared about was his art was mentioned. It would have been interesting if he turns mad because of his guilt being associated and trying desperately to stop Candyman.
It was alright. I just didn't like how they portrayed the black man and also how the black woman was leading the relationship between the two main characters they made her seem low-key masculine. The death scenes were good tho

But I want to see another movie with Yahya and Teyonna, their chemistry was great.

Why wasn’t Helen a ‘Candyman’ in the film? Multiple Candymen was goofy and took away from the OG Tony Todd version.
Her decomposed body was in the church at the end while that psycho dude was performing that ritual on Anthony ..she was a “witness”… he actually dug her up at sat her in the pews!! To me that was the creepiest shit ever!!

I called it. After I saw the first trailer and saw who was producing this movie - I knew it was going to be a woke nightmare. Candyman is a great film (1992), Tony Todd was amazing and even created the background of the character. The new film, like you said, is a cash cow - an attempt to feed off the anger and frustration of an entire race, and that's pathetic. You can have your message, hell the original Candyman spoke about race and class perfect and managed to scare the hell out of people. This one? Horrible. And a waste and totally killed the Candyman franchise more than Candyman 3. Good review! Really enjoyed it.

The whole time I was watching it, all I was waiting for was Tony Todd. They should have toned down the woke, incorporated Tony Todds candyman into the story and made it longer.

Why would you want to bring an older Tony Todd back as Candyman? He should be left alone in the three prior movies he had. I think that’s where they messed up with the original, having his face so boldly broadcast. It left no room for future character development, but somehow they figured out how to stretch the story. Unlike Freddy, leather face, Michael Myers who all covered their faces or had prosthetic pieces, Candyman the spirit wouldn’t have made sense him being older. Spirits don’t age the way we age. They tried their hardest with the de-aging feature and… is that REALLY what y’all want? A CGI version of Tony Todd for multiple films? Todd had his time. Move on.
Tony Todd is old and if you watch his interviews he loves the love he gets from the movie but he's ready to move on, Yahya will be a great replacement 👍 I enjoy movies especially horrors that have something to talk about, I thought it was better than the original

Political film not horror film...White men bad, police men bad. Just another movie with a political agenda. a movie made to make white people feel like they are horrible people and should repent in some way. That is the movie. Originality in Hollywood has died. but if you like movies that are very Anti White and Anti Police then you'll be entertained. Another old classic ruined by the usual folk. Everyone knows who they are. They ruin movies, sports, and anything that you enjoy in life. Until we actually do something abt it will keep happening until we have nothing left.

I loved your take! A few things I can say is that this movie gave you no one to connect to, no one to feel sorry for. Everything is so rushed and so very forced! The original Candyman is legendary because of Tony Todd’s monologues, and the fact that the movie allows for you to understand Candyman beyond his doings but his feelings as well. This new movie does not show those things, there was an extreme lack of Candyman. I need a redo!!
The trailer gave away the whole plot of the movie. I knew immediately after watching the trailer that the main character(Anthony) was going to turn into Candyman just like Helen. Uh Duh!!!
I was tired of looking at that art gallery and condo..this how I felt with Coming 2 America...they’re not moving around enough for me to really feel the environment

Sherman fields felt like a background character. He had no presents what so ever..Tony Todd made me shit my pants in the parking lot and was memorising every time he was on screen..also Vanessa Williams really need to be in more films her cameo appearance was awesome she knocked it out of the park

Jorda Peele is a raging white hater and it shows. He also completely misunderstood Candyman. Candyman was not somesort of anti hero and shits. He was a murderous ghost, who does it only to maintain his soul, his legend. His tragic origin deals with slavery, racism of a very old times, yet, none of those matter to him anymore because he became a monster and lost every bits of humanity he had left. He never seek vengeance or justice, he only loves to kill. And all of these made him so great, because he unapologetically evil and strikes fear into your mind everytime you use your mirror.

I'm with you on the original, love it. CREEPED. ME. OUT. This sequel though, I don't know. It tried but SMH. If you're gonna make a political point, fine make it bc the original did. If you're making a horror, make it the original was. But if you're gonna combine them, you'd better know how to write it.
The original Candyman put a bit of focus on economics, BUT it didn't overshadow him as it shouldn't. Too much political stuff can overshadow the main story. This sequel had its moments of potential but , but doesn't measure up to the original.

I personally believe that Universal delayed the film not just because of COVID-19 but because the last thing they wanted was to add fuel to the fire because of the riots and the BLM protest. But the reason the ending left a bad taste in my mouth is because a couple weeks ago, Ella French, a Chicago Police Officer came back to the force from maternity leave, was shot and killed by two brothers who had an illegal gun and drunk. Look I get there are crooked cops but not every police officers are bad, but turning Candyman into an Anti-Hero and killing cops is not what he is, they ruined him.
That message in from the cop to her in the backseat of the car was so HEAVY and deliberate as if we aren’t aware these things are happening🤷🏽♀️

Another funny thing about all of this…
The original Clive Barker Candyman was actually white and the story took place in London. Candyman was simply a spirit that killed for disbelief, didn’t even have the mirror or name chanting involved. Rose brilliantly added it to give him a SLIGHT backstory and because he had to actually make a MOVIE out of the short story. The part about Daniel being a slave was actually beyond revenge; it was used to tell a tragic love story and gothic romance (so deep that it is actually scary at the same time).
Right, the whole “revenge” concept is completely antithetical to the character’s motivation. Candyman kills indiscriminately, to fuel his legend. Yes his backstory may be tragic, but he has moved beyond the concept of race. It’s hard to tell whether he’s still Daniel Robitille or something different entirely. That’s what makes the original so telling. He is otherworldly and detached. Clive Barker’s Candyman is ethereal and so random. You know nothing about him and he shows up at the very end of the story. Rose introduced a rather tragic but subtle background to the character. It was a tell of racism, but that’s not the main theme. The main theme throughout is the impact that racism has on society and how it effects everyone indiscriminately.

As a black person I can honestly say, if I would've read the review that said this before I watched this movie, I wouldn't have went to see it:

The whole movie was just "white people are bad and they need to know it". I hated it so much. I told my sister when we went that I just hated the constant social justice, black inequality and oppression references of the film and the constant pitting of blacks against whites. It wasn't anything like the original, in my opinion. WAY too much "political correctness", I didn't enjoy it. It was just so....boring, trying to be "woke", irritating, "white people suck and black people don't" trash. The fact that she called on Candyman in the end to come and pretty much save her...I just---no. He killed all the white people, then gave this small speech about how the cops or white people in general were looked at as innocent, but weren't. So stupid. Candyman says "Say my name", BLM says "Say their names".
Garbage film that just sucked so hard. Hated it.

Well it was nostalgic to me I was 6 maybe 7 when I saw the 1st one scared shit less literally could u 2 public bathrooms r my own then I turn 36 n c this one n it was the exact same movie to me liked all the Easter eggs that I saw like the intro it was Cabrini green inverted cuz n the 92 version it started from I sky view n cgi cuz they singed knocked down the towers by now plus I'm blk so the whole injustice thing n cops dying at the end I didn't mind seeing I actually needed to c it so its not lived in reality they totally pondered to the plight of the black man theme so whit that it was a master piece this movie was a culture thing we dont have the big 5 freely jason... we got Tony Todd the candy man and the most of candy man that started it all ruthie Mc coy keeping her memory n not her killers alive with this story

OH! I just noticed in that screenshot of Coleman Domingo's character reading a Clive Barker book - haha That was kinda cool - a nod to Barker's short story, which was the inspiration for the original Candyman movie. Evereything you said about his character is exactly what I thought as well.

Movie was a disaster. It’s so woke from start to finish. From a gay interracial couple to a dying man being shot right beside a civilian. Things in the movie was so forced just to further an already weak plot.

"Woke" is a passive aggressive form of racism.
I would barely consider this movie a horror movie.
I thought I was the only one who didn’t like this movie. When the ending came around I was just like 😐😐😐😐. I wanted a straight horror movie staring Black people, not a social justice film. And the way the relationship was portrayed didn’t sit right with me. The black woman who came from trauma taking care of another black mans trauma. And Tony Todd was barely in it at all until the end. They could have done so much more with this film but it just came across as a “gentrification is bad” movie that was very in the nose.
I think he was barely in it because they had to deage him just to make him look like he did back in the day. Although he looked artificial as hell. Tony Todd has aged really well but you can tell he’s older and we all know ghosts don’t age. They probably didn’t have the funds to have him deaged for a longer period of time.

I love the original Candyman! So I tried to watch this new movie on Amazon Prime, but I gave up after 10 minutes and the umpteenth time someone said “white people bad”! And not because I happen to be white, but because I’d hate to see this done with any other race/color, call it what you like. I stand with MLK Junior and his message. Dividing people into good and bad isn’t healthy.
You want to watch a horror movie about racial injustice, watch “12 years a slave”. That’ll give you nightmares. Why? Because it punches you in the stomach, because it was made with the right intentions.
But nowadays, too many film and TV makers come along with a political agenda that feels forced and disingenuous. I neither want to see another token gay or black for comic relief, nor am I interested in some political message. I can put on the news for that.
Just write some interesting characters, no matter what they look like, and give them a good story.
I think my biggest issue was the way all the initial rules of "Candyman" were thrown out in the last scene. Why are we all of a sudden able to see him outside of the mirror? Why did he begin killing a police officer that had nothing to do with the summoning? Idk.. it was a beautifully shot movie but when you think about it, that was about all it gave.
I was hyped for this movie at first but the more TV spots I saw from it the more it worried me, especially with it showing that it was going to overdue the political message it was trying to convey in it's story. I'm still going to see it cause I love the original, but I'm not going into this as hyped as I was last year.
I felt the same way but I kept the FAITH! And should have DROPPED IT LAST YEAR 😂
But to be fair the opinions will vary on this film so you just might like it🤷🏽♀️

I could take the script and make a more effective movie just as good as the first one. With the same material.
1. Anthony is looking for new material for his gallery and looks into the Helen Lyle story from his GFs brother.
2. After some digging he finds out he's the baby from the story by his mom. This happens in the beginning of the film which causes him to look deeper into what happened and meets Burke. In turn finding about the Candyman legend.
3. He creates his gallery and during those weeks he begins having dreams of the victims of the past along with the voice of Daniel Robatille.
4. During the night of the gallery a few Out of touch critics and attendees say the name completely while there and start turning up dead. Anthony being the subject of suspicion and harassment by police.
5. In the ongoing weeks Anthony gradually mentally and physically deteriorates and more murders happen. Causing Brianna to leave as he gets more unstable.
6. He searches for a way to stop this and goes back to Burke who has been secretly an agent of Candyman's or the swarm's supernatural influence (it's hinted in the original film that he can hypnotize ppl like Helen).
7. Brianna's worrying about Anthony causes her to look for him not knowing police are tailing her. By the time she finds Burke who has already set up Anthony as the killer. Just as Burke is about to hurt Brianna, Anthony kills Burke with the hook instead.
8. When all seems calm, officers/detectives from early on in the film see Anthony standing over a dead Burke and shoots him. Causing the tragic end for our protagonist. The final scene plays out except now we get a longer scene of Anthony morphing into Daniel Robatille much Earlier since his soul is now Assimilated into the Hive.
Gonna make this my headcanon for what happens within the events of this film. Leaving loose ends entirely unexplained and acting like they're tied up is something that annoyed the fuck out of me in this movie, it was made all the worse towards the end when it falls apart and just seems to be swinging for left field just because.
Jordan Peele is like the M. Knight Shyamalan of woke plot twists. Except Shyamalan makes original content. Peele is 3 for 3 in remakes (Get Out was a remake of Skeleton Key, Us was an adaptation of Mirror Image, and now Candyman)
You know what is beautiful but not trash? Its you! My problem whit this movie is it wants to tell me i am trash just for being white and straight. We are far from the MLK days , now i am ranting. Good review keep it up.

I watched the movie yesterday, you are on point with your video, this was a woke movie disguised as a horror movie, it was more of a political statement than a horror slasher. "White poeple bad, black people good". I'm not white nor black, but even I could see that wokeness bs in this movie. I love horror movies but this was more of a propaganda movie for a group's beliefs that feels out of place. It's good to see more people are fed up with wokeness bs messing with their entertainment.
Well the 20% of America who are woke will like it. Imagine trying to sell a product that 80% of the public dont want??

" Woke trash" *laughing*. They loaded the movie with social themes and reminded you of them every scene. I saw 3 black men with their white girlfriends, wives or whatever. Wonder how they felt watching the movie. I get what the metaphors and how artsy the movie was, but with different hands in the project, they couldn't really be clear on what they was trying to get across with the characters and the direction of the story. This movie will leave alot of people confused and wishing it was on HBO max instead of waisting gas to go see it. To me, a waist of $16.33.

Billy’s line in the new version about the cops showing up when the victim is white echos a scene in the original by Helen after she’s attacked in the gents by the hoodlums, which brings attention to the police.
Candyman 92 is a traditional horror flick though, ‘cause this sub-genre of horror was still popular in the 80s/90s. There was also media appetite at the time for serial killers Bundy, Dahmer, Nightstalker etc, who had just been put on the chair, were still committing their crimes or were on trial.
CM21’s boogeymen being the cop replacing the serial killer is because that’s what’s in the news now, also, the first film, as great as it is, is a “white” horror film and Nia DaCosta wanted to make a “Black” one, similar to the original Django film and Tarantino’s update.
The only slaying in the new film that didn’t fit the narrative for me was the white teens in the locker room. I’m guessing this scene was included to scare white girls in the audience who will make up a large percentage of the crowd, but the killings of the art critics and cops made more sense to me.
Still enjoyed the movie, but I understand those whose opinion differs to mine.
Candy man is anything BUT a hero… it’s like trying to make Freddy Krueger a hero….. it just doesn’t work…..
Last thing I wanna say is why didn't they just have Yaya play a young Candyman before he was dead then we can see what happened to him and that's where you can work in the themes of racism
