My late husband, Jeff Porcaro, co-wrote AFRICA. I just shared your video with our three sons. We loved it! Thank you so much for posting this. Made me smile, laugh, and cry... Be safe on your journey. Susan
Wonderful, wonderful happy video. And thank you to you and your family and of course your late husband Jeff Porcaro, he gave so much joy to so many, including myself, through his music. Obviously not ever having got the chance to ever meet him, it is nevertheless very apparent just from watching his drum instructional videos and master classes at Musicians Institute that in addition to being an absolute masterful and tasteful drummer, he seemed to have been such a down-to-earth and humble guy, AND very funny to boot - he just seems to have been a such a super-nice guy and a lot of fun to be around. I'm not even a drummer, I'm a guitar player, but some of my favorite RUclips videos to watch are his masterclass at Musicians Institute, and excerpts from his instructional video, especially him explaining the "Rosanna" shuffle and his drum parts on "Mushanga" - and not only the technical aspects of drumming, but it's just a delight listening to him talk about growing up playing, and the course of events in his professional life in music. And he always gave such props to drummers he admired and was inspired by, like Bernard Purdie and many others. It just feels good to watch someone you admire also be an excellent human being. Take care!
I don't know how many others, like me, to whom this song hit on such a visceral, reverential level. For over a decade it was my example of *perfection*; where writing meets performance and nothing can be added, subtracted or re-done to make it any better. I went on to perform, write songs, and critique music and this was the standard I always deferred to and never attained. No worries, I never expected to, but was content knowing what the standard was.
Im so sorry for your loss! We all are sorry that he's gone! He was a great musician and wrote some legendary and iconic drum parts! Im a big fan of him and he's musicianship, and he also seemed so nice! Toto are still great but will never be the same without him
Susan Porcaro Goings Ma’am, so happy you and your sons saw this and commented on it. You probably know but want to state again that Jeff brought so much happiness to so many people, in adding to so much session jobs, and with the songs from Toto. I played with drums a bit when I was a kid and understand what the drums and baseline bring to a song. There is no drummer in the world that would not recognize the first few bars from Africa as Jeff’s brilliance,
Hi Susan. Darren Here. This is my Video. Thanks for the lovely comments. I created this video for people like and and yours to enjoy. We enjoyed every minute of it and if it wasnt for your late husband none of this would have happend. I thank you and him for this. Take care.
As a South African, that works, and has worked in the offshore industry for most my life, well done... No matter where I am in the world, when I hear this song, I feel home, and can smell the fresh wet grass that has just had a afternoon thunder shower.. Great job gents.
I seriously think this is the most underrated video on youtube. I could watch this every day and it would still make me smile. I think 2:40 is my favorite moment. Those guys are so into it and so awkward at the same time - they are totally committed. I love it. From the bridge to the galley and everyone in between - nice work!
I couldn't agree more. I live in Africa with a bunch of Americans and I don't think I could possibly get this many people on board to pull a video like this off.
I'm impressed as, an old oilman I congratulate the idea. It's thousands times better than boring Companies Official Videos. I will show it tomorrow to mu HSE Students at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland.
I thought about it but the company I work for, has a very strict rule of what pictures can or cannot post on social media 😔 but I think this is important to show people about offshore life. I made video about it on my channel,
I was a Tidewater PSV captain (frack boat) for three years in Equatorial Guinea. This video was inspiring when I first saw it and now brings back so many great memories - great song, great maritime work, great location... memory lane! Thank you for making this video. It is my favorite RUclips video. Our managers wouldn't let us do this - our big loss! You have made a name for yourselves and your companies. Congratulations.
The world was this super beautiful only 8 years ago, and u could actually see every races looked so happy to do this video. Lets get back to this beautiful world peeps!
I'm Brazilian, I've worked on a Norwegian drilling rig offshore Namibia, it was an excellent turn of job. I loved this video. Congratulations to the “musicians” and “performers”!!!
Been offshore for about 15 years, this is one of the best I've seen for a while. There are loads of these kicking about on offshore vessels. First time on youtube though.
Just watched it again - I love this song ... Hilarious bit when guy clangs yellow gong and misses ... Brilliant can't stop laughing a tonic when feeling blue !!! x x x
This made my day, and I'll bet your family and friends back home especially loved it. What a positive reflection on your employers that you guys have such teamwork and camaraderie. To find joy no matter where you are or what your job is a wonderful gift.
I´m a offshore worker too and I believe that wasn´t easy to make it happen... congrats to the OIM and all crew involved in the video! It was realy weel done... There are some people that just don´t understand what is stay confined for long days on board a vessel. Nice job! Keep up!!!
Don't condemn these gentlemen, condemn the black gold addicts if you must condemn anyone. This was beautifully done and everyone involved deserves our thanks.
Hats off to you and all the guys from Subsea 7, Hess, the kitchen staff, Cameron and others! Much respect from a fellow oil industry worker! Absolutely Brilliant! Fantastic!
What I loved about this video was the closing credits. They show how absolutely international an offshore service ship like this is. French ownership. Filipino/French food service, Norwegian and West African officers, West African crew, specialist labor from Scotland and Texas.
One of those occasions when I get a tad bored of a classic song after hearing it so many times, but then something makes it feel brand new again. Very clever bit of work.
I come back to your video often over the years Darren. It's one of the best feel good music video of all time. Thank you for making it. In my mind, the crew and subs of the Bourbon Peridot are still cruising West Africa making new pieces for RUclips, and will post them soon. Man, the Capt. and Safety Officer allowed you guys to do it! Good on Them. I hope the boys in the home office in Oslo know the amazing PR you're doing for them!
I've been obsessed with the song for the last couple of weeks, have seen quite of few videos, original performances by Toto, a bunch of covers, etc. This is such a fresh lip sync version and I love it!
Everyone has their job to do and everyone is an important part of this industry. Lets hope all these guys are still working and are being kept safe at sea...great job will be using this for my safety training videos in future....
thank you all of you guys for watched our video.make you and fun.much appreciated that guys.but the sad things is we're all in defferent ship now we dont know wherever they are.i'm in galley crew...thanks again
Allen, great video ! I was just sitting here watching it and thinking that by now most of the guys had probably gone to different places and jobs. I hope all of them are in work in these tough times. I remember going to a rig and doing some service work on the equipment. 15 years later I went back to the same rig now it was not the same owner, but, the crew only changed one person, and that was due to health issues. They were a family ! Thanks again for the video.
This was one of those little things in life that put a smile on my face. Thanks, guys! When I saw the guy being revived with the defibrillator, I thought "That's the guy from The Hurt Locker!"
That is touching that you saw this video. I was reading about Jeff after I read your post, a talented musician who gave us so much great music. Gone too soon, R.I.P. Jeff.
feel super simple to make it... but we know that it's not... steal creative... steal crazy..and ...humble ... good job man...love the song ...80's never die ... 80s forever
So awesomely done. Its so funny, since I introduced it to her, my 12 year old daughter has loved this song as much as I have since the 80's; and I have always felt that it needed a everyday, modern interpretation.
Robot 9 to Bourbon Peridot West Africa.... Message to follow..... Thank you for putting a smile on my face again today. Robot 9 has multiple sclerosis. You guys helped me get thru the last 5 days. I have sent it to all the people I know.
Awesome. A good testament to how many people it takes to run our world. The guys we never see, behind the scenes, doing stuff so we can operate on a daily basis.
Darren- I think it was you whom I met in a Bangkok bar and you pulled up this video. We watched it and I was flabbergasted with how creative this project is. I still live in Bangkok and watch your video often. Best wishes and be safe! James In Bangkok
..or maybe I should restate that.....BANG A GONG-GET IT ON. THAT should be your encore guys!!! Let's hear it....Loved it. Made my day - I needed some happy. AWESOME!!! Thanks everyone who is the Crew of the Bourbon Peridot, West Africa 2013, in this video!
This just popped up on my feed. Still find it hilarious even after all this time - can’t believe I first saw this 9 years ago! Can’t hear this song without replaying the video in my mind.
Absolutely Brilliant! Now I know where all the gorgeous guys can be found! Guess I'd better learn how to swim. Just brilliant to watch on a freezing cold wet day in Glasgow! Thank so much guys, you are doing a great job out there. Lynda x
That was really fun.........the fella who comes in at around the 3:55 mark..........the superimposed singing head..........FANTASTIC!!! You made a guy working in Burbank California smile with that one...................
Laughing, and smiling, sat and watched from start to finish out here in the GoM (so yea it took awhile but was worth it). Glad to see you looking good Brad, yes little grayer but still got that big ole smile. - Skelator -
I've been watching this for a few years now... Long after having left Luba and Malabo. Your performance so reminds me of my years spent there. The BEST in my life ! Thanks to guys like you. Excellent performance, thanks for sharing these magic moments on RUclips !
