  • Did you know that the western population of the Monarch butterfly is scheduled to be listed as endangered later this year? Join us today as we tell you about free ways that you can help the monarch butterfly, including finding free seeds and plants that will help support your local pollinators.
In 2020, the population of the western monarch butterflies dropped to an all-time low. Monarch butterflies are huge, colorful and have become a symbol for native pollinators. Luckily there is an organization in California, the Monarch Fellowship, that is working to rebuild the population by distributing free plants! Volunteers, or hubs, receive free seeds for milkweed and nectar plants and then plant them into containers. Once the plants are large enough to transplant, the hub can schedule a free giveaway at their home or another location.
Rebuilding the native milkweed and nectar plants won’t just help the monarchs, it will help other native pollinators and will also help bring beneficial insects, birds and other animals into your garden to create a small native ecosystem.
