I worked at McDonald's as a teen and another young man was working drive thru who had a nice deep voice . He was hired by a radio mgr right there at the window! My older son has a nice deep voice too, was recruited by choir directors.

I wonder how much of this was made up by her accusers... obviously the more absurd and insane they could make her sound, the more likely they would succeed with getting her convicted. Anyway, good video as always!
I wondered that too, especially because this was during the tail end of an era of witch hunting that would see thousands of people killed with very similar accusations (in fact, it was about 10 years before the Salem witch hunt in the US). And my understanding is that the French legal system at this time allowed confessions obtained under torture and was one in which the accused was assumed guilty and had to prove their innocence, so people would do basically anything to avoid being accused (including turn on their own friends and family), so people (especially the family members of someone who's already been executed for witch craft and court that might be accused of having known something) would be extremely sensitive to suggestions. There was also a huge hysteria element to it (cause people were hungry and scared all the time, a lot of them had various forms of environmental poisoning (e.g. ergot) and infection, and that does weird things to the mind), so you'd have someone ask "hey, do you think Marie has ever done witchcraft?" and suddenly the entire town would believe they saw Marie throw children into a fire in a black magic ritual. I'm not saying she didn't do at least some of it. From what I've read modern analysis suggests it's likely she was performing abortions and providing poisons to people, but the rest of it...maybe? Maybe not? And even then, cultural perceptions have changed so much. Like today we'd react very differently if by "giving out poisons and performing abortions" it meant she had learned to identify pregnancies that would surely kill the mom and result in still birth and decided to at least offer to save the mom, and that she helped battered women with no legal way out save themselves and their children vs. that she coaxed women into abortions for money and to use in rituals and handed out poisons like candy. And the truth may vary well be somewhere in between...but while today we'd see those scenarios as hugely different I'm not sure they would have in 17th century France. It's all really interesting considerations.
Yeah it seems like in the Renaissance and Victorian time periods, it seems like poison was the woman's weapon of choice. No need for any of that messy hand to hand combat.
Still is the predominantly female choice of killing. It's petty fascinating. Women are also more likely to overdose than to use a gun in suicide. It's a very small percentage, so small it's outed a few men who killed women in their lives and tried to sell it as suicide.
Actually people don't seem to appreciate - and his video failed to put the historical context of public health - that death in the 17th century was commonplace, couples had 12 children 8 died in infancy 4 survived was common. People easily died, there was no clean water in any sizeable city. Water born diseases were common, and fatal. People died of natural poisoning (not criminal) everyday. So, to add a few poisoning in the mix, would have looked almost benign and undetectable. The frequent natural deaths almost seemed to suggest that it was easy to push someone to the other side with only a bit of help.
It's refreshing to be able to see the mysterious voice behind Forgotten Lives. Your content is very well researched, and your pronounciations are impeccable. A novel called The Oracle Glass, by Judith Merkle Riley, takes place in the dark underground court of La Voisin. Some supernatural and romance aspects, but quite historical and very well researched.
Came here after finishing a book called Serpent and Dove, which revealed a character's aunt to be La Voisin! Thanks for this recommendation, looking forward to it now~
I read that book and it’s astonishing how many of the actual events the author was able to work into her story, and so seamlessly! But, given the drama of the actual events, perhaps I shouldn’t be so surprised!😂
