Nick i’m so happy to see you enjoying Gyeongju and beautiful weather! i really like listening to your comments about history, point of view as an American, and connecting events in Japan and Taiwan, it’s kind of refreshing. 😊 it’s getting cold so i hope you have a warm relaxing time at Jjimjilbang 😶🌫️
I appreciate that, I love hearing positive feedback like this 🙏 thanks so much for your support! I'm actually back home in Texas right now, but after Gyeongju I think I stayed in a jjimjilbang at least 15 more times lol
The sky...... the air... looks so nice. Kyungju is one of my favorite cities in Korea. I'm planning to stay there for more than a week this winter. As I watched your vid, I am amazed by how smart, strong, brave, polite and down-to-earth you are, Nick... I'd like to raise my daughter like you!(if this makes sense at all..lol) Can't wait to see your next video!
Korea has been a great place to spend the past 3 plus months. Especially because I was lucky enough to travel all over the country and see so many wonderful things. I'm very fortunate!
Nick! I really enjoyed this video too... I guess you'll be busy in Texas too... But... Aren't you curious about what winter is like in Korea? haha~ It's a completely different landscape and atmosphere than what I've seen all summer. I'm looking forward to it~😊
14:50 Nick, it's been a famous restaurant since my great-grandfather was married, ate with his great-grandmother, ate with his grandfather, ate with his mother, and I ate with him. I'm so glad to see you in the video
There was a time in Gyeongju when high-purity gold came out just by pumping a hand into a river. There is even a saying that dogs wear gold leashes in Silla. Silla was a rich kingdom with a lot of gold, as it appeared in records such as Persia, Europe, and China. With the development of mining technology in modern times and the Japanese invasion of Joseon, approximately 249 tons of gold were looted from Gyeongju, so Gyeongju will no longer produce gold. Whenever I go to Gyeongju, it is quite interesting to walk down the street imagining the Silla period at that time. I also wonder what it looks like after it was restored. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks Nick
So... when are you coming back? We miss you already Nick. And thank you so much for showing us all the parts of Korea that most people don't care to see. God bless!!!
21:47 According to Professor Mark Peterson who studies Korean history, none of Korea's tombs were robbed. Some or all of them were dug up and treasures were retrieved to display in museums. Another archeologist assumed the same but Professor Peterson corrected him. The archeologist couldn't believe it. Professor Peterson talks about it on his RUclips channel, The Frog Outside the Well Research Center.
It’s also nice to grill the garlic in addition to eating it raw. Sometimes they will give you a tin foil cup with sesame oil and garlic so you can place on the grill and cook it!
Old Joseon, the first state of the Korean people, was destroyed by the invasion of the Han Dynasty(China) in the 2nd century B.C., followed by hundreds of city states (similar to Greek polis) of Koreans in Southern Manchuria & Korean Peninsula. After hundreds of years, it was consolidated into Goguryeo in the north, Baekje in the southwest, and Silla in the southeast, so Korea became the ‘3 Kingdoms Period’. The Silla Kingdom in Gyeongju Starting as a city-state in the first century B.C., united all of eastern Gyeong-sang Province in the 3rd~4th centuries, and unified all of Gaya's city-states in the western Gyeongsang Province in the 6th century. The Silla Kingdom merged Goguryeo and Baekje in the 7th century to become Korea's first unified nation. However, Silla united only the southern area of Goguryeo. The northern area of Goguryeo(Manchuria,) was occupied by the Tang Dynasty(China) which intervened in Korea's unification war. Koreans in northern area of Goguryeo were kidnapped to China, but they escaped 30 years later and returned to Manchuria to establish Balhae, which succeeded Goguryeo. Thus, Silla's unification of Korea ended in 30 years and again became a divided era called ‘the Period of North and South Kingdom’. Entering the 10th century, most of East Asia, including Korea, China, Mongolia, and Manchuria, was in chaos. China was divided into over a dozen countries, and the nomadic peoples of the north moved south. In the 10th century, Korea's, Balhae kingdom was destroyed by the nomadic tribe ‘Khitan’, and Silla kingdom was divided into 3 separate countries. After about 30 years of fighting, this time Goryeo Dynasty reunified Korea. After the Goryeo Dynasty's reunification, 500 years for the Goryeo Dynasty & 500 years for the Joseon Dynasty. For 1,000 years from the 10th century to the early 20th century, Korean maintained a unified state. But, in the first half of the 20th century, Koreans were oppressed and slaughtered by Japanese imperialists for 30 years. After Japanese imperialism was defeated by the United States, Korea was divided into two Koreas by USA forces and Soviet forces to the present day.
Unfortunately, you could find tremendous amount of Korean tresures in Japan that were looted, robbed or sold during Imjin war and colonial period. They don't exhibit them in public because it is shame on them. (NICK, I really want you to dig in about IMJIN WAR in 1592) 😢 One more thing, beautiful temples in Kyoto area were built by engineers from Bekje kingdom which is one of two opponents of Silla kingdom at that time in Korean peninsula. 😅
Looking at the spot where the old Royal Palace used to stand for 834 years I was wondering what the purpose is of the basins covered in blue plastic. Agricultural land? It must have been an interesting exploring day. When I saw the stream I was wondering if you’d jump in..knew it.
