John, you are so right about slowing down a bit. We get caught up in day to day schedules and it can transfer to our own hobbies and private life. I got into the habit of leaving filter media hidden in a tank so I eventually will be able to start a new tank with it! Great topic!
I just did a version of this by moving the media from my old Fluval FX-6 and put it all in a new FX-6 body. Very little risk with a deep substrate and a sump also running on a well established. You’re right about Fritz. They have the best bacteria in a bottle.
after i have just spent the last hour correcting youtubers offering bad advice on their videos i must say this man talks total sense i approve this message !
I do the run in tandem when I need to replace. The extra power draw is minimal. I have also found that a failing filter just needs help at times. If you are not blowing your fish around the tank, you are not over filtered.
Hi there I’m from the UK . just started in fish keeping and found your channel on RUclips very informative about everything on fish keeping and how to start up an aquarium and I’m learning a lot from your videos thank you so much. Have subscribed.
Gotta think like an occupational therapist some times, the simplest answer doesn’t always work But, if you can find ways to make it easier and get the same result that’s a win. In the case of a filter, it’s simple, the bacteria you want is in the tank, if that’s not enough you have a media that’s already saturated with beneficial bacteria and put in the the new filter until it has the bacteria picked up and put new media in it or if the old media is working in the new filter, you got extra media, another win! Love you guys, stay happy and healthy my friends!
I always run 2 filters so if one fails, I have back up. I just turn down the second filter so there is very low flow. My daughter has the same filters in her tank so if there's a problem I can grab media from her and vice-versa.
I always run multiple filters on my tank normally HoB filters. I really like the Top Fin pro but I want to upgrade to a canister for my 75 gallon even though my top fin pro is great I really want a canister. Ive been looking at the Cascade 1000 for my 75 gallon. I plan on adding it while the top fin is running and then removing it and adding it to my 55 gallon bearded pleco and barb tank.
Omg this is so true. Everyone needs to calm down about just about everything lol! 😂 Enjoying your channel since I’ve gotten my Betta fishy established. Thanks for the good balanced info ❤
Tanks and hood hold up well over time. Filters I've tried were loud and barley worked stipped trying them so might have corrected issues. I've had no luck with their heaters but also have tanks in colder rooms than most people, so they might work decent if your tanks are in a heated room.
I get so frustrated with how people assume there's *one* rght way to do a thing, and lots of wrong ways. They are wrong ways to do a thing, sure, but there's often LOTS of right ways, and lots of "good enough/just fine" ways that won't end the world. But the mindset is just so binary. Things are perfect and right or horribly wrong. If you like hot dogs, you must hate hamburgers. Augh! There's ALWAYS nuance, and in a lot of cases the difference between the "optimal" option and the "good enough" option is so small as to be indistinguishable.
John, if you have a tremendous amount of ROCK STYLE DECORATION,s inside your tank.. Does that compensate for filter media just not being so important to save the biological bacteria.. Can you just simply replace the filter media without worrying about the loss of the stored bacteria in the media because of the large amount of ROCK DECORATIONS have it stored onto them ?

I keep at least 2 filters on all of my tanks. That way if I have to change a filter or filter media I still have a filter full of bacteria.
Currently listening to this in the car while at work. Been watching John and Lisa for a few days now.

John, I’ve been around a while and done all that, but I still had to listen to you. Thank you for making me feel very good about myself 😅

I just buy backup equipment, heaters, pumps, lights etc .
These titles are getting better and better :)
You can take apart a hang on filter and unclog it
Alot can be solved with more frequent water changes rather than jump to chemicals

Hey man I want you to do a video on like guppies or something fun
A friend gave me his 20 gallon tank and he kept the dirty filter,l set it up in 1day and lost no fish ! 🤓🐠🎸
If I got a tiger Oscar is 125 big enough for one?
Should be fine
is that tank not level? looks almost as off as my 75g!
What can I do to get rid of the smell in my tank help
Arnt you supposed to change your filters
Your videos have become like crack to me. Don't currently keep fish but I will one day again. Also I'm a discus guy.
Thoughts on the top fin starter kit ?

Very easy. Just change it.

You were making sense to me until you stated you bought a new Apple phone every two years which diminished most of your creditability with me...
