  • This week we follow Axel's incredible journey of perseverance and recovery and from his venous malformation and we'll hear from Jonas (one of the coolest nurses around!) Also my dog Bernie is at the beginning so that's great too.

Thank you Carys for sharing this truly inspiring story. The fact that God's children can smile and be at peace in the most difficult of times is a testament to His promises and His real presence in our lives. I'm so grateful for that right now in my own life during a very challenging time, like yourself it sounded like. I'll be praying for you Carys... for continued peace, strength and direction. You are loved my Sweet!!

Hi Carys, I have two questions about Mercy Ships, one not related to the video otherwise.
    1. May the Crew possess personal defense weapons while on the ship, or things that could be considered as such, in any capacity?
    2. More related: may crew members bring a guitar to play during time off, and would there be opportunities during time off to play guitar for any willing small (in-cabin) to large (on deck, etc) size audience?

Hey Daniel, I apologize for the late reoly, I took a break from youtube and vlogging this month as I get ready to head back to the ship soon! In answer to your questions 1. No we are not allowed any personal weapons but we have an amazing security team of Ghurkkas who keep us well protected. 2. You can definitely bring an instrument, many people do. Cabin space is tight but you can probably store it under the bed or if you want that limited space for other items in your cabin we have a few instruments on the ship that people can "book" and use after work hours.

@@CarysParker thank you for getting back to me!
Regarding the Gurkhas, my understanding is there are 6, as in 6 men for the whole ship. Is that correct? My concern is despite your impression of being well protected, those 6 men can be spread out and limited in their ability to protect should a large band of attackers storm the ship. Pardon me if I'm 'making it weird'.
I'm glad that I could bring a guitar though. :)

@@CarysParker I read this to learn more: www.mercyships.org/sp_faq/is-it-safe-to-live-on-board-the-africa-mercy-in-west-central-african-nations-what-security-measures-are-in-place/
While I still wonder about sufficiency some, there is at least more going on than just the 6 men. Are those men armed at least? Thank you again for getting back to me.

@@danielgoodman3578 I understand your concern but we have other members of our security team as well and a captain and officers who are always aware of what's going on in port and in the surrounding city. We also have the ability to of course pull the gangway up and sail away if things get really bad but we have not had to do this as far as I am aware. In my 19 years aboard we have never been in any situation that required personal weapons and our security team has kept us very safe. I think ship life in West Africa might seem dangerous from a-far but once you are here it's a very different picture. Thanks for the question though, and I am glad you can bring a guitar too!
