- I lived in Egypt for two years, and this trip to the south of the country was the most memorable I took. The region called Nubia bridges the south of Egypt and the north of Sudan.
Accompanied by Egyptians, we lived for a few days on a Nubian island, which became a window into the culture and history of the Nubians. Both have been shaped by the River Nile and the Aswan High Dam.
In ancient times, Nubia was an independent kingdom that was influenced by the culture of Ancient Egypt, almost like a viceroyalty of Ancient Egypt. For that reason, several temples were built on the banks of the river, such as those at Abu Simbel, Kalabsha and Philae. These Nubian-Egyptian monuments are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
