As far as popularity goes, it was significantly behind the average viewer tv ratings for both DB and Z with its peak episode for such (episode 2) being behind Z's average and GT's average being slightly above what was the minimum rating for Z. It also wasn't advertised to anywhere near the same degree as Z when it came to merchandising, which was a major factor in the difference in popularity too. In terms of critical response from fans, it wasn't lambasted by Japanese viewers to anywhere near the same extent (especially not for the petty reasons that are often brought up by the western fanbase as opposed to the more genuine issues GT has) but there does seem to be a level of apathy towards it compared to its predecessor with its fans not hailing it to anywhere near the same degree.

But what I'm saying is that information gave me the impression that GT got very little to no love from our Japanese peers.(GT characters being feature in DragonBall fighting games, Xenoverse, and Super Dragon Ball Heroes not withstanding, as I'm unable to explain my cognitive dissonance with that.) And MADs like this showed me that GT does have some place among the Japanese fandom, even if it's not to the same degree as the OG Dragon Ball or Z.
I missed the old Goku when you get to see him serious more often, in Super it's pretty rare and still act goofy when the entire world is in danger. Lol 😂
