I have a 1976 Zorki 4k. If you look at the serial number the first 2 numbers correspond to the year of manufacture. It's on the lens too. This applies to Soviet cameras in general.
Zorki's are so legendary for breaking that it actually diverts attention away from their even more deserved reputation for constantly malfunctioning. Really cool cameras when you get the hang of them but you must follow the totalitarian procedural instructions for operating the camera and never deviate from the party line. Read and re-read the manual before you even touch the camera.
I just bought a Zorki to apply for a film photography course and was terrified about not being able to figure it out. This was an hour very well spent! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and delivering it in such a clear way.
On the flash freezing your subjects on slow shutter speeds, I've always thought those photos from flash photographers like William Klein and Bruce Gilden were the coolest thing ever. Took me quite a while to figure out how they did it. People watching your video are very fortunate to get this technique from you right off the bat. Thanks a lot!
Thanks Rob. I have tried what you suggested, however I'm afraid I haven't had any luck. Shall definitely buy another, meanwhile I shall follow the golden rule! " Always wind on , before changing shutter speeds! "
Thanks for uploading all of this stuff, really professionally done, and really helpful. Also, the photos you have on your site are amazing, you obviously know your stuff. You really and truly deserve every one of your subscribers :)
Very informative thanks. I recently bought a 4K cheap on Ebay and it is in lovely condition. It's viewfinder is big, clear and bright. Mechanically is it a very nice camera to hold and operate.
My Zorki is completely Russian, and it has straps holders. My Zorki was damaged by changing the shutter-speed incorrectly. But it was fixed by my camera repair-man by unbending a PIN. The PIN held for this to be made! I just love my Zorki! ESP. since it does not require batteris and it has the perfect lens; the 50 mm Jupiter lens (no fungus!).
The Zorki cameras and the Fed cameras are a great alternative to Leica cameras. I personally think that the picture quality in these Russian Rangefinder cameras are as good as the Leica film cameras.
I already have Zorki 4 (currently undergoing maintanance) so I decided to pick up Zorki 4K which just appeared in photography shop nearby. Your videos are great help :)
No problem :) I think it´s the most complex video about Zorki 4K so far. I almost finished film in mine and I´m so looking forward to develop and see resoults. I have my suspision, that there will be some issue with rewinding the film and shutter is closing somewhat slow in slow shutterspeeds... But nothing what CLA wouldn´t fix. I will send it to repair guy as soon as my normal Zorki 4 returns from him - thats my joy and pride - Zorki 4 from 1969 complete with bill, warranty card and original Czech manual! :) It was broken when I bought it, but it deserves to be shooting again.
Thanks! A really thorough and informative video. I’ve been wanting to try a rangefinder for a while and just got a Zorki 4 for my birthday. I didn’t have a clue how to use it, but I feel much more confident to put a roll of film through it and hopefully get some good results. Cheers
been thinking about one for ages ... have always used a rollei 35t which I love but just got a hankering for a full size rangefinder ..... after this think I'll get one ..... cheers..
Well done you have done a great job in the video. I watch reviews regularly and this review is defiantly one of the best I've ever watched. Keep the good work coming
Sorry Sir… I'm joking of course ! I try my hand at “English humour”. Your video is just excellent. I bought my Zorki 4K yesterday on eBay. And guess what, an Englishman is selling it to me! Good day, sir and a big thank you!
The exposure triangle really only has 2 sides with film as the ISO is not something you can play with as in digital cameras. So if you use 125 as a shutter speed to prevent camera shake, that only leaves the aperture to play with. So for a beginner, it can really be quite simple.
Great video! And theres me thinking I knew what there was to know about rangefinders, boy was I wrong!! Ive just purchased my first 4K and while Im awaiting delivery, I thought Id do some homework... Didn't know about the winding/shutter sequence until now! You've probably saved me a lot of grief! Thanks again!
Absolutely fascinating video, thanks for posting. My first 'real' camera back in 1978 when I was 18 was the Zorki 4. I've had two 4K's since then and the biggest problems I've had are the wind-on levers becoming jammed. I've actually got one with me as I type this and I'm making enquiries abaout having it fixed as a direct result of this vid. I do have all the digital wizardry as well but it has no 'magic'. So much so that despite getting my A-level in photography a few years ago I still miss film and haven't taken any shots just for enjoyment, just digital wedding shoots that are no fun at all. I might even get my old Olumpus 0m2n repaired as well. Thanks for the inspiration. Please consider me subscribed.
Excellent video and explanation thank you very much sir! The only thing i wonder is how to set timer properly. I tried to do it without winding and now timer lever looks down, I fear that I gave a damage.
Yes, I took it out this evening to photograph some trees along the river Suck, with a Gossen Luna-Pro, I was getting 125th @ f11, ISO 100. I much prefer it to my FED, that is very hard to focus.
I think it's the growing popularity of film cameras that is making it more and more difficult to find decent cameras. I think £20 to £30 pounds is realistic with the Jupiter 50mm lens, but expect to pay more for the Orion 28mm approximately double. That's going off the prices I'm coming across. I'm not a big one for street photography and if I wanted a wider view I'd use one of my Canons with a modern lens, so it's more the 50mm I'm interested in. Personally, and this is just me and I'm not recommending it, I send all "new to me" cameras to a company in Liverpool to get a full CLA. It costs about £30 which put the camera above its resale price, but also gives you a camera you can trust. As usual a superb, well constructed video.
I've finally found one in mint condition and with a CLA with the Jupiter 8 for £30. All the shutter speeds are supposed to have been tested but I think it will be living mainly around 1/250 as I'm using TMax 400 with it. I found it very difficult to find one at a realistic price and with all the shutter speeds on. I've got one of the silver lenses from 1974 (matching the body) so it has the zone focusing numbers on it and it came with a black hood. Also got the lens case, front and back caps as well as a generic body cap for the camera. I won't be using them but they are there for when my great grandchildren come to sell it.
Great review and an excellent primer on Zorki 4 cameras. Loved it :-) My only complaint is: I am guessing you have a microphone mounted on the camera which is sitting on the table you're sitting an. Whenever you put something on the table or use your mouse, it makes an ungodly noise. I know I am complaining on a very high level, so it's definitely no biggie.
That’s how I got zorki4 from relatives when I was visiting first time he brought to me like here have it I didn’t take it then now I shoot film called still have it going to send ASAP tmrw👍
Very very very helpful stuff! I wish I watched this before buying my Zorki 4 (a really old one, made in 1959!) because I didnt know how to test it and now I have a faulty old Zorki that I just really want to use already. Hmm, what other kind of basic (and cheap!) film rangefinder camera would you recommend? :)
Mr Rob - will you create a review video about quality of the pictures of the Zorki 4K rangefinder camera - i will be getting very soon zorki 4k from ebay.
I've just seen that there is a wheel (with an X and MF) under the exposure selection wheel. What's that wheel ? Don't want to brake this nice camera :)
Thanks Rob.I have tried what you suggested however, no luck! Shall definitely buy another. This time I shall follow the ...Golden Rule! Always wind on before changing the shutter! ! P.s Many thanks.
Sometimes you can get then straightened out by simply advancing the film and shooting over and over.....I did that once...It wasn't a Zorki but a Kiev 4...I just kept advancing and shooting,,,on and on till it somehow was aligned again....I cant remember who told me to try that....But I did and it worked....I cant say that would work on the Zorki for sure because I honestly don't know if it would or not...But its worth a try...Also check out the Kiev survival site of you own vintage Kiev or other rangefinders ...they have a LOT of valuable info on the site...Also have info on several old models of medium format film cameras...Check it out...It is truly a great asset to vintage camera owners....If you type in "Kiev survival site" on your search bar you will find it....
does zorki 4k take better pictures than Fed 4 ? - i asked, because i had taken some photos,by using my Fed 4 rangefinder film camera and i was really pleased with the results of the pictures.
Thanks Rob for the video. It has given me ideas how to use my latest acquistion of a Zorki 6. The only thing I am unsure about is whether I can use a film roll straight out the pack as other sites and manuals state you have to cut the film thin for about 10cm. Any ideas? Also, how to rewind. Thanks Colin
Great video Rob. Only problem I have is.... on my 1st one i broke the golden rule! Forgot to wind on before changing the shutter speed. Now I'm left with a jammed shutter. Going to buy another, meanwhile, is there anything I can do to remedy the problem. R.S.V.P
Thanks for that. Such a great looking camera. I had a Zenith B with a Leningrad 4 light meter for years. Now have a Zorki 4K, Fed 3 and Fed 4 in my retro collection. I copy the negs on a vintage Pentax 50mm f4 Macro lens, so I can edit in Photoshop. Here's the Zorki 4K user manual: www.cameramanuals.org/russian_pdf/zorki_4k.pdf
I just got mine from eBay this morning, CLA’d £30. I already had a lens. I have a question though. There was a bit of paper with it saying “3 dots on release unit must be in line before winding” I don’t see any dots round the shutter release. Do I just make sure the release thing is turned back round fully clockwise? I have been making sure to wind on before setting the shutter speed like a good (60year old) boy btw lol.
Rob Nunn One thing holding me back from seriously considering a Zorki or FED is what you mentioned here, about having to change the shutter speed *After* pulling the lever. Are there any models where you can readjust whenever you please? Thanks
Thanks for this beginners guide! It was very useful. I do have a question though. I just got a zorki 4 straight from russia and it came with a industar 50mm f3.5 lens which is great. I thougght most range finders had frame lines within the finder itself. Now I see the zorki 4 does not have it. with which focal range does this finder match? And what do I do when I switch to a different focal range?
Steef they are set up for 50mm, when you use a lenses of a different length you need one of these below. I think you must be able to get cheaper but this was the first one I found to show you. I believe it gets quite complicated as you focus using the range finder and frame with the turret thingy, or visa versa. The frame lines are on the Bessa and a little company called Leica also uses them, but they also have a switch for 3 or 4 different lens sizes. They advise against changing the lens too often as there is a little lever that gets depressed when you put the lens on. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Turret-Finder-VARIO-Viewfinder-for-28-135mm-LEICA-Rangefinder-Lenses-/361967125212?hash=item5446ec02dc:g:CVgAAOSww3tY5OWu
So I was fucking around with my Zorki... I pressed down the shutter release button, and at the same time was winding the film leader and it looks like she didn't like it, because now i can't press the release down. I mean a little yes, but it won't fire... Any help? Great video btw
I have a question... what happens if I change the shutter speed before I turned that knob? I have a zorki 4 in my family and most likely someone played with it at some point. If you could answer I would be most grateful :) thank you for the video, really helpful, I want to start shooting with these old cameras and since I already have a zorki 4 I should start with that one.
Andrei Teodorof Glad you liked the video. If the shutter has been turned before being cocked, the camera may be OK, but often everything goes out of sync, or the shutter will jam. If lucky it will sort itself out by cycling the shutter wind / change speed / release shutter process.
Andrei Teodorof Just try winding the camera on, then firing the shutter. If it sounds ok, then wind it on, change the shutter speed, and try again. If it stills sounds ok, then try doing the same at different shutter speeds. If the 1/500th sounds a lot faster than the 1/125th, you should be good to go to try some film. Good luck!
In your opinion which is the better camera .. a Zorki 4 or a Kiev 4 ?....I have a Zorki 4 and and a Kiev 4 and a Kiev 4am... .The meter is not operational on the Kiev 4am but I found a Great WEBSITE recently telling step by step how to repair it yourself....If anyone wants info on how to do a LOT of repairs this website is the best thing since the wheel...Its called the Kiev Survival Site...They not only tell how to repair the meter...but also tell how to replace the shutter curtain ribbon ...most of them break eventually...and a lot of other repairs....OK...sorry to go off subject but I feel everyone that owns a vintage Kiev camera should check out this site...I'm looking forward to hear anyone's opinions on which camera is best between the Zorki 4 and Kiev 4 ....I like some things better with the Zorki...and some things better with the Kiev... I guess honestly it would be hard to pick one I like best between the two...But if I had to let one go and could keep only one I'd probably keep the Zorki...but as I said they both have good and bad points ...... Its honestly not an easy decision....I love all of my old film cameras.....I have to sell some soon and I'm not looking forward to that....Thank you for a GREAT video !!! ....And not only Rob Nunn but anyone that reads this I'd like to know your thoughts on Zorki 4 vs Kiev 4 !! Thanks again !!!
+Buck Sellers That's a difficult question to answer, as I don't have a Kiev, but I guess it's more about which one you enjoy shooting with, and get the best results. I like the Zorki, but I'm biased.
+Rob Nunn ... I enjoy all if them.... I love the "feel" of the Zorki....but the Kiev has a much quieter hence not as much vibration from the shutter...They both take great pictures....You can get great lens for both cameras...both are designed for 50mm but as I'm sure you know you can shoot longer lens with a rangefinder attachment...or viewfinder I guess I should say...I've asked a lot of folks this question....everyone has a different answer...So I guess you are right Rob....Whatever you enjoy....I enjoy shooting film....period....I really don't know why....some folks say its cheaper...that's bull hockey...Its not cheap shooting film....but I still enjoy film over digital by a long shot.... Have you had much experience with the Russian medium format cameras?....I tried the Kiev 88....It wasn't for me ......I think next maybe I'll try a Kiev 60.... The Kiev 88 was a pain in the ass....took GREAT pics but you worked for EVERY one of them....and then some....The Kiev 88 was probably the worst camera I ever used...not because of its ability for sure because you can really get some great shots with it...But it was definitely the most aggravating camera I EVER used for sure!! ...Most people agree that have tried one....Anyways....thanks again Rob for the great videos...Very helpful !!
+Андрей Юсупов ..Actually lots of people think its a great camera..including myself..... The only folks that don't think its a great camera are the ones that don't know how to use it... I guess you would be in that group....lol...
No that's definitely not funny...Not funny at all ! ...Please forgive me...All jokes aside...There are a lot of people that like to shoot film...On the other hand there are a lot of people that think its crazy to shoot film in the digital age....I enjoy shooting film...Seriously I cant tell you why...I just do...There is nothing wrong with not shooting film either....To each their own......I was simply making a stupid joke...No offense intended...
Gary Robinson I see it also has the strap lugs. There is so much choice out there, I never thought buying a cheap camera would be so difficult. Is there many idiosyncrasies with the Zorki 6 I should be aware of please? I really like the look of a 4K, and I know this sounds daft, but I'm on high levels of medication affecting my memory and I'm more than liable to mess the sequences involved.
I have a 1976 Zorki 4k. If you look at the serial number the first 2 numbers correspond to the year of manufacture. It's on the lens too.
This applies to Soviet cameras in general.
The best thing about the Zorki 4k is it can be used as a deadly weapon during the apocolypse and it will still continue to work as a camera.
unless you change the shutter speed before winding the film, in which case a portal to hell opens and tears a hole in the fabric of reality.
You hit on the reality that I live in, the more newer a product the more obsolute it is!!! I dig my mechanical Zorki 4K!!!
Hello. I'm from Romania and I have an old Zorki. Thank you for this tutorial .
Wow thank you. Just got my camera and had no idea how to use it but you have made everything so much clearer. Much appreciated!
I just bought a Zorki to apply for a film photography course and was terrified about not being able to figure it out. This was an hour very well spent! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and delivering it in such a clear way.
edma22 My pleasure. Enjoy your new camera!
I might get one and stick a red dot on it.
Thank you. Loading film at 28:29
Just bought one from Ebay for $40 US. In working condition. So Im told. Thanks for this great video. I learned allot from it.
Many Thanks.

Didn't have a clue what i was doing.

Wealth of information here. It has answered so many of my questions. Thanks for all your effort!
Top video! It convinced me to buy a Zorki 4k & now that it has arrived It'll be my Bible. Thanks!

+paul greenwood Hey, welcome back to the club!
Mine is the Zorki 4 with industar 50mm f/2.8 i use a (nock off) black rapid style strap Hoya UV filter an inexpensive vented lens hood.
Excellent video and explanation thank you very much sir! The only thing i wonder is how to set timer properly. I tried to do it without winding and now timer lever looks down, I fear that I gave a damage.
Nice video, I was thinking of buying a Zorki 4, now I definitely will. Thanks.
Very cool. I will keep an eye open for one of those.
Dan Dabson They're great cameras.
Excellent video very informative
ive got a zorki 6 i love it. i can change the shutter speed anytime. i got it from fedka. it wasnt cheap but it had a cla so works perfectly.
Nice enthusiastic guide - It's a bit easier to put the film leader in first then pull the film cassette over to left ;-)
Excellent and helpful video and it made me decide to buy one of these cameras.
Glad to help!
Darren Bentley Blj
Doesnt shoot 4K!? Screw it, I’m switching to sony
PaowinPandas C'mon dude, this cam is actually called '4K'... For sure it shoots in 4K. Pretty much state of the art in 1972 ;)
Well it does shoot in 4K, if you put in the right film, the framerate is shit though.
LMAO! The comments here are why I love reading comments sections. :D
You win internet post of the day.
Very well explained and some sample images, what more can you ask for! now where did I put mine.
mamiyapress Quick, find it and get shooting! Seriously though, glad you liked the video, thanks.

Its lucky I got a manual when I ordered mine
Great video. Just curious, no ASA settings?
No need, as there is no built in light meter.
Thanks! One of the best guides I've ever seen :D

+colyn barrett Tricky, but try gently turning the shutter speed dial and winding and firing the shutter - it may free up.

this is good. i picked one up in a charity shop for £4 😀
I just got mine from eBay this morning, CLA’d £30.

One thing holding me back from seriously considering a Zorki or FED is what you mentioned here, about having to change the shutter speed *After* pulling the lever. Are there any models where you can readjust whenever you please? Thanks
Thanks a lot for your advice! I also bought my first film camera (minolta SRT 201) thanks to you. Cheers from the US!
StEVO Type R No problem, glad to be a help!
ive got a zorki 6 you can change the shutter speed anytime. its also easier to load film and a bit smaller i love it.

Perfect, thank you.
Rob Nunn thank you for answering so fast, and how will i know if everything is ok? As i said i have very little experience with this type of cameras.
Good luck!
Thank you for your quick responses, I really appreciate that, I tried everything you said and it appears to be ok. Again thank you!
As the other soviet cameras, the shutter speed control is complicated
What happens if you change the shutter speed before advancing the shutter? Does this damage the camera forever? Can it be reset?
How do you know when your at start of film. to set dual to zero on wind lever .normaly can see were film is throu window on rear .on other cameras
Super!
well it was 50 pound + 30 pound shipping. That said, I just purchased one for 111 pound.
Nice 👍🏻
How can I clean the lens, I have fungus inside lens
There are no lugs on this camera. I have modified my case with scissors and Velcro.
I will leave you to imagine how I did it.
How can use tripod for zorki 4
thanks, nice to have this piece of advice ! Cock the shutter = safe and happy camera :)
I have 3 Zorki 4....none of them completely work 100%......not broken them intentionally........?!
Ok Sorry. Yours must be different to mine.
It's impossible to knock your film counter on one of these. A cack handed review.
neil piper mine is loose as well. So it is possible, don't be an ass.
@@derkeksinator17 fu too jimmy
LOL, You wound on so much film you'll end up getting 4 images from a roll of 36.
I have Zorki 4k and I don't use it. It is fanny you find it is a great camera.
+Андрей Юсупов ..Actually lots of people think its a great camera..including myself..... The only folks that don't think its a great camera are the ones that don't know how to use it... I guess you would be in that group....lol...
+Андрей Юсупов ...Do you think that's fanny ?... lmao
Buck Sellers thanks for your opinion. some time i will think of shooting with this camera.
DIGITAL SUCKS !! Film is more fun, and cheaper...
ive got a zorki 6 i love it. i can change the shutter speed anytime. i got it from fedka. it wasnt cheap but it had a cla so works perfectly.
Nice!
