Not sexy but so important. Playing basic music in time is far more enjoyable for the listener than advanced stuff all over the place. Brilliant Adrian, makes me wish I still lived in North London!

I'm not a guitarist... but I'm learning ukulele. I want to be even on chord changes and picking so I have been deciding on a metronome. I like the sound of mechanical but love abilities of the digital. You have pointed out the pros and cons. Thank you.

I'm a seventy-year-old guitar newbie and bought a metronome just two days ago. Last night I tried changing chords on the beat. Not at all easy but it does force the septuagenarian arthritic fingers to try to behave a bit better. I've heard of being "in the groove," but has anyone ever said to you, "Rad, dude, you're on the click, man!" Maybe a new idiom is born. I'm wondering if you travel in a clique? Thanks for a great lesson!
My arthritis decided to act up on me and doing anything on the guitar is beyond painful when it does. I want a real one and I am leaning towards the old mechanical one used by pianists.

Learn to love the metronome...This is pure genius! And of course it makes sense. Or should we call it "Dr Woodward or how I learned to stop worrying and love the metronome..."
Really respect the video. I loved in the Pentatonic lick how he didn’t use a traditional fingering position. Typically that minor 3rd stretch on the bottom of the scale would use fingers one and four, and instead he used one and three. I’ve beaten myself up for under-utilizing my pinky and sticking to “traditional fingering,” and this gives me a little bit of solace when it comes to my ‘poor technique’ lmao.
When I first started playing guitar, my sense of timing was virtually non-existent. I found it incredibly difficult to play in time because I just felt like I was fumbling looking for the notes/chords to play. I greatly improved after my friend taught me some basic beats on the drum kit. Playing drums to a click track is super helpful too and I feel will carry over ot guitar.

Alternatively if you don't want to spend money on a metronome and you already have a drum machine. Most drum machines can be paired down to a single beat of a sound of your choosing, whether it be a snare sound or tom sound or any number of sounds the drum machine has. Just a thought.

I like how as he's explaining what you can do with the metronome as it's clicking along his explanation falls in time with the metronome.

Yes, that will work well. Used to do that myself with an old Alesis drum machine and run it through my studio speakers.
