  • The purveyors of a unique brand of 'blazing desert metal' return with 'Shehili' (released by earMUSIC on 3rd May 2019), which is perhaps the most accomplished and satisfying release of their fifteen-year career.
LIke the fierce Saharan wind that gave the album its name, the twelve tracks will blow you away with its combination of epic soundscapes, enchanting eastern melodies, North African beats and steeped in the folklore of their Tunisian homeland.
Reflecting the geographic diversity of a country bordered by desert plains to the South, the Atlas Mountains to the West and the Mediterranean Sea to the East, the Myrath's music is founded upon on a rich and diverse sonic landscape with instrumentation and compositions that are equally beguiling and powerful.
In this extended interview, Andy Rawll speaks to lead singer Zaher Zorgati and long-time producer Kevin Codfert about how the original line-up of the band formed in 2001 with the initial name of 'X-tazy' and then adopted their current name (meaning 'legacy') in 2007 with the release of their debut album 'Hope', with longstanding keyboard player Elyes Bouchoucha providing confident lead vocals.
Having been impressed by Zaher's Dio-like voice, and seeking a dedicated front-man to take their live performances to the next level, the son of Sousse (a coastal town 200km South of Tunis), the band's expanded line-up recorded the well-received 'Desert Call' in 2010.
Since then, the band has gone from strength-to-strength, finessing their unique 'blazing desert metal' sound and strengthening their songwriting to deliver the acclaimed 'Legacy' album in 2016.
'Shehili' not only surpasses that record in sonic ambition it also finally delivers an epic, windswept soundscape that befits the legacy, influences and capability of this talented band.

Thanks. They were a delight to speak to. Passionate about their music, but not at all arrogant. Zaher is a top-class vocalist and the new album is wonderful. Enjoy.

Their English, especially Zaher is impressively advanced. One could say he is proficient. Don’t be fooled by the accent, listen to his vocabulary and grammar His language is very nuanced and he manages to get his point across very well. And remember he is multilingual - he is proficient in Tunisian Arabic and French as well, so he deserves credit for his English level.

@@MaggieKleppe I know, I have a lot of respect for Myrath for the reason how they break the boundaries, innovating the music. I suppouse their succes is much more worth than this of a band that would be formed in Britain and play british rock, touring the world and recording albums in their hometown. Myrath had to break through to the foreign music scene, starting off in a country, where this kind of music has not so many perspectives as for example in Germany at the same time.
I am fluent in Polish, English and German, last two I've learnt on my own, so I know very well how much time it takes to learn a foreign language and how many obstacles there are on the way to reach the level of a native speaker. I am kinda glad that the guys speak English with their own accents, because it reminds the listeners that they are foreigners and activately put energy into learning the language, so that they could communicate with the fans around the globe. How easy it is to be a native speaker in English and performance on the English-dominated metal scene!

It's funny! I was there the night he moved from Introspection to Myrath. Actually the band from Sousse created the big surprise that night. I didn't personally like the way they (Myrath) stole the front singer. Good to hear Zaher mentioning Introspection who was the big reason for his success. Pirania was ok, his first band But Intro.. moved him to another dimension ;) Good luck man!
