Building a bridge would destroy the precious, rare marine life like corals and dugongs that live in the strait. Also, the previous land bridge is an important monument in the history & culture of both countries and the majority want it to be preserved as it is. As for the Sri Lankans, they don't want a bridge afaik. Some greedy Indian politicians & businessmen from the state of Tamil Nadu want the bridge that's all. It isn't due to political reasons, but ecological & religious reasons that the proposal was shelved. Building a bridge would destroy the precious, rare marine life like corals and dugongs that live in the strait. Also, the previous land bridge is an important monument in the history & culture of both countries and the majority want it to be preserved as it is.
As for the Sri Lankans, they don't want a bridge afaik. Some greedy Indian politicians & businessmen from the state of Tamil Nadu want the bridge that's all. Most Indians don't care about it as well (I'm an Indian).

Whether Chennai exists after 1000s of years isn't something that concerns us, but we have done more damage to nature in the last 150 years than the previous 100,000 years combined. That's enough. We can do well without the bridge in our lifetime and for the next 3-4 generations as well.
