Im heading there in 2 weeks to work and live, excited!
I remember that flight back in 94, 95
Alas I know it well. 11 trips and a total of 26 weeks on Kwaj.
In the 60s Kwajalein was served by MATS and a World Airways charter from Oakland CA via Honolulu, a 2-day trip in a DC-6. On the main island is nothing but radars and staff and families. It's the western end of the Pacific missle range. I doubt anything could be added to make the island a tourist attraction.
yclept9 I took that World DC-6 charter many times as kid, at least the part between Honolulu and Kwajalein. 10 hours each way. The aircraft was configured as part passenger, part cargo. They passed out chewing gum to help your ears on takeoff and landing.
Yes back in those days jets could not land there. I don't recall if we flew in on a DC-6, but it must have been. Lived there 18 months. As boy scouts we took a field trip to the military end of the island, and were permitted to peer straight down into a Nike Zeus missile silo within what they called Mount Olympus. That missile loudly shook the entire island every two weeks for their repeated interception testing. Very exciting times.
This is Majuro Marshall, Islands airport it's be on the beautiful blue lagoon... looking beautiful place for landing!
Wouldn't mind visiting this island. Nice place to retire?
WOW! islands look beautiful
+FormEEh Ohyeah Agreed!! A must see for sure.
What program did you use to do that route on the map at the beginning of the video?
+UA31402 Hey, I built the route using Great Circle Mapper www.gcmap.com Awesome site to check mileage etc.
Hey can one still visit Bikini Atoll or is it still not safe because of radiation from the nuclear bomb testings in the 40s?
Bikini Atoll is safe to visit. We had lot's of tourists come to Majuro and booked them to visit Bikini Atoll with Marshall Islands Visitor Authority or the Bikini Atoll Local Government for diving.
Pls come visit our Islands Majuro Marshall islands !
How many miles did you accrue?
+Jeff d'Hedouville On this journey, 17,675; and am at 31000 this year. I have a few trips planned which will put me at around 60-65000 in the next little while.
Holy cow. I thought I had a lot a few years ago when I had 25,000 miles with US Airways. I cashed them in to fly out to LA. It will take a while before I have enough miles for a free flight.
My goal this year is 100K with United :P
+AvgeekYVR Do you ever go for the miles, and the vacation too?
On American I have 473,281 and 166,802 (points) on Southwest. Got to love business travel! I have used some in the past and I've been traveling fairly often since 1996. But I've met other travelers with a million miles, or more, that make me look like an agoraphobe!
Miles and hotel points are the only real rewards of business travel...but it beats the hell out of you after a while.
why would United airlines do this route?
Its an essential service to the islands. United has a base in Guam.
because United Airline is the only flight that going to Honolulu and Guam also Islands hoppers.
3 things. Military contracts (lucrative), Guam hub, and cargo (also lucrative). Plus, it's been operating since the late 60's by Continental, who United later merged with.
the best flying routes n there's no other thn fun island hopping on united airlines
