  • Hello.
Today, we are in Ünye, the pearl of Ordu province in our Central Black Sea series.
    Have fun watching…
Fatsa in the east; Terme, İkizce and Çaybaşı to the west; It is adjacent to Akkuş and Kumru districts in the south. The Black Sea draws the northern border. It is 63 km from Altınordu, the central district of Ordu, and 87 km from the center of Samsun. It is the largest district of Ordu after Altınordu, the city center.
The typical Black Sea climate prevails in the district.
The economy of the district is mainly based on agriculture. Indeed, hazelnut agriculture is the lifeblood of the district's economy. Families dealing with hazelnut farming, businesses dealing with hazelnut trade and hazelnut cracking facilities constitute the lifeblood of the economy. Hazelnut orchards cover most of the district campus. Products other than hazelnuts are products that do not occupy a large place in economic life and that families generally grow for their own needs.
Apart from agriculture, the biggest industrial establishment of the district is the Ünye Cement Factory. Unye port could not reach the expected vitality. However, thanks to the Ünye Shipyard established in it, the ship has assumed a more active role in repair and construction works. Artisan enterprises are the most important source of livelihood after agriculture. Indeed, it is observed that the tradesmen also shape the political life of the city.
Hazelnut, which is the lifeblood of the economy, also determines the social life. It is observed that the district center is empty and people go to the villages in the end of July and August, which is the harvest time of hazelnut. Before the harvest season, Ünye experiences its most vibrant period. The dynamism of social life draws attention with the effect of the Unye Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and the Vocational School opened in recent years.
Architecture in Ünye can be divided into old and new. The new one has features seen all over the country. Sites, cooperative houses, excessive concreting. Still, it's considered a relatively neat placement. It is seen that the urbanization has spread to the coastline and the borders of the district have reached 27 km. The apartments rising along the long coastline, on the other hand, exhibit a distorted urbanization. Old Ünye is established in an area that extends from the place known as Yalı today to Çakırtepe. The old Ünye houses still exist in this campus. The old Ünye architecture carries traces of the Ottoman on the one hand and the Greek culture on the other. While Greek architecture is dominant in the Yalı campus, Ottoman architecture is observed in Kadılar Yokuşu.
The known history of Ünye dates back to the Hittite period. The settlement and its surroundings within the borders of Rome remained under the rule of Danishmends and Anatolian Seljuks. However, no historical remains have been identified within the boundaries of the district regarding these periods. Later, while it was within the borders of the Trabzon Empire, the Trabzon emperor II. Ünye Castle was built by Ioannis. The Ottomans captured Ünye in 1461, while the Hacıemiroğulları Principality was in the hands of it.
The old town of Ünye, located at the foot of a hill on the Black Sea coast, was formerly known for the manufacture of sailing ships. 20-25 ships were manufactured each year. The town was also one of the important ports on the Black Sea coast. Shipbuilding brought with it an important wealth in the town. Depending on this wealth, mansions were built in Ünye. With the advent of steamboats, sailing ship manufacturing declined. The town of Unye was also an important trade center when sailing ships were manufactured. With these ships, goods were transported to distant places such as Crimea, Istanbul, Bulgaria and Romania. On the other hand, the town of Ünye was one of the piers visited by the ferries traveling between Istanbul and Trabzon-Rize.
At the beginning of the 20th century, 5,290 Muslims, 3,074 Greeks and 797 Armenians lived in the town of Unye. About 43 percent of the town's population consisted of Christians.
The Orthodox Greek community in Ünye was affiliated to the Archbishopric of Niksar. The Catholic Armenian community was affiliated to the "Trabzon Armenian Catholicism", and the Gregorian Armenians to the Trabzon Armenian Delegation.
At this date, Circassians and Georgians, who were recorded separately as Greeks and Armenians, were counted among the Muslim population. For example, in the Trabzon province yearbook dated 1870, the Circassian population of the Ünye district was recorded as 250 households and 573 adult males.
Five languages were spoken in Ünye: Turkish, Pontic Greek, Armenian, Circassian and Georgian. The common language was Turkish. The Muslim people of the town of Unye commonly wore khakisrs, coats and trousers. The Greeks also wore similar clothes. Georgians and Circassians wore their national clothes.
