Offa's Dyke

  • To the west of your ancient lands lies a deep, gorge-like valley. In many places high, rock cliffs line both sides of the valley. A wide and fairly deep river flows through it also. Oh no, this was not enough for Offa. He was the King of Mercia and ordered his men and women to build a dyke to "defend" the western limits of his lands. I venture my opinion on his reasons in this Wye Valley walk.
Make your own minds up but to me this ancient earthwork seems, on the face of it, utterly pointless. Nevertheless, it is a delight to walk along.

Did a Bristol walk this weekend just gone. That was very much on-grid.
