here is a follow up to the part 1 video I made in October, (just posted it today though). I did some pruning now that it flushed out its spring growth.
I just got two sumac trees starts from my neighbor and thought it would be cool to use one as a bonsi. Your vidios were awsome, I can't wait to try it out
I do believe some of those old branches need to go to let the new growth come in nicely, and retrained with wire? those branches jutting up straight don't look bonsai-ish jmho. I'd prune back hard.imho
I don't personally follow any Golden rule on this. I'm always reluctant to cut old growth until I am absolutely sure its the way to go, only because it takes so long to get the "old growth" look. In this particular case, I wanted to leave a lot of options open since it's still in the beginning phases. I can always cut later, but I can never put it back.
Nice little tree coming along there.

Awesome, good luck with them! Mine died unfortunately. It fell out of its pot at some point over the winter and I think that did it.

That's the plan for Spring 2023
Keeping old growth vs new growth? Kepp in mind I'm starting to believe, clip and grow is a good method. What are your thoughts?

This is a great video. I didn’t like the first video because you didn’t explain anything, because the video was quiet
What kind of sumac is this? It doesn't look like Vinegar Sumac and Tiger's Eye.
Oakleaf sumac. "Rhus trilobata"
