    Welcome to my ted talk.
This was a fire episode and this dude was a great guest. Couple things I wanted to mention as an american. First, why are american culture standards slightly lower than say the EU for example? This is imy guess, in America we have these two giant petstores than essentially monopolize the market for pet keeping, which is mad weird because we are supposed to have laws or something against that lol. These two chains give generally horrible advice, and prior to the internet, people entering the hobby would just trust these stores which lead to a culture of bad care. This is changing now with online stores and mega corperations are learning you can make more money by catering to "bioactive" enclsorues/keeping. Also, the old people who were breeding some of the "specialty" animals, for the most part, had sus practices, think of like rows of racks of animals. So they propogated bad care. This is also changing as people learn about better husbandry/culture through social media. Also I will rep for younger keepers in the US, we now care about UVB and believe its a real thing lmao
Second, contrary to the guests experience with young people monetizing animals in Germany, I think in America its becoming the opposite. People my own age I talk to mostly care about keeping their animal as pets and providing the best possible care. Those interested in breeding are often focusing on small batch breeding, espeically less common speiceis as to not further dilute our market. It's mostly old people that are doing the large scale reptile farms/importing them. But yeah, Stefan's observation about Americans wanting to make money off anything is generally true and it can cause issues. American's can get lost in their grindset and only care about turning something into a business. Finn is also a 100% right that the plant craze during Covid messed up our market SO BAD. tbh I'd be pissed of too if I was like an 70ry old dude not knowing why a begonia that was $10 a month ago is now like >$100 lmao
Final thing, not just for america, but I've realized there is a fine line between gatekeeping inexperienced people coming into the hobby, and just not telerating people who enter for the wrong reasons or are not going to take it seriously ("where can I buy this?", "what animal is this? I want it so bad!" xd). Honest and well intentioned people should be supported when entering the hobby, cringe people and people with goals of only making money shouldn't be.

Thanks for your feedback and insightfull reply!
I love that term "grindset". Think its a great way to discribe it think. Not neccecerely (?) A bad thing but indeed great way to discribe something I feel is almost part of IS culture or at least is branded in that manner.
Like your open and positive attitude towards any new person coming into the hobby. Never pondered not replying to certain questions can already can be gatekeeping? Maybe a happy medium is needed.
Great. This is what this podcast is for. Get to think about these things. Thanks again and hope to find you one the next one! (Stefan)

I think his opinion on European zoos was a bit too harsh. I get where he is coming from, but not visiting also makes you miss out the development. Like here in the Netherlands, almost all zoos are developing with a very rapid speed. Especially Burgers zoo is an excellent example of this, really worth it with their ecodisplays.
Anyway, amazing episode, learned a lot!
