- Rare Sixties Girl Group Sound Patti Gilson Don't You Tell A Lie 1964 B side to Pulling Petals ( From A Daisy ) Golden World Records - GW7. Written by Freddie Gorman & Bob Hamilton. Produced by Rob Reeco. Out of Detroit, Michigan, this was recorded in the same studio session, on the same day as The Reflections recorded ( Just Like ) Romeo & Juliet. That song has the same writers and producer as this 45. Whilst she was there Patti provided the background hand claps for ( Just Like ) Romeo & Juliet, so The Reflections did the hand claps for her recording. I'm guessing it was on the A side though cos I can't hear any on this lol. Patti was just 17 at the time and this is her only solo single. Prior to this, I think she was in the girl group trio "The Elites" ( not the Edna Wright Elites of "Sir Galahad" fame ) this Elites only had one single "You Mean So Much To Me" in 1962. The very first and last picture on the video is of them. Group members were Pam Rushman, Patti Gilson and Ann Tobias. Patti's the one in the middle. I hope I've got it right and it is her lol. I read they travelled and performed with The Reflections, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder and others. This reminds me of early Motown, not surprising really with them being so close by. It has a slight Mary Wells / The Supremes sound and I find her voice a tad Tammi Terrell-ish in parts. I like the words and the backing "Aaar Aaar Aaarr" "Oh Oh Oooh" I'm sure I heard this somewhere years ago. Maybe one of my sisters had the vinyl or it may have been on an old tape. With good marketing I think this could of been a hit. But, like most of the tunes I post, it was destined to be the flip. "Still Bigging Up The B Sides Baby" in 2020 😊 x
Wow wow whee it's the one for me!!! It's fabulous I love this , I thought I new most of the golden world output , but it's new to me , your right queen bee , very Mary/Diana, I once read that some of the Motown musicians moonlighted to G W studios, maybe that's why it sounds as it does , course I wouldn't swear to that !!! Well baby youve surpassed yourself with this , Thankyou, ohh ohh ohh ohh. Ohh Ohhhhhhh
LOL Keeley, I love your comment and I knew you'd like this. It's the one I mentioned to you last week. You're totally right. Some of the Motown artists were moonlighting as backing singers for them. Berry Gordy was well peed off about the whole thing at the time. He ended up buying Edwin Starr off of them in 1966 for 2 million dollars. Pat Lewis and Sue Perrin were also very good singers from this label. Glad it's new to you baby. Sha La La La Laaaa Baby It's You lol xx
I'm Patti Gilson living in Florida. The answer is YES ...Motown writers also wrote for GW.
This is my mother in law singing! She is so flipping talented and this is beyond cool!
How lovely. Yes, Patti is a great singer. This song should be more well known. Thanks for commenting.
Love this one new to me and very catchy! Many thanks Clare x

How are you ?
I hope you are well and healthy 💝
@@CarlosPinedo210955 I'm good thanks. Stay well x
The producer was Rob Reeco, which was an AKA for Bob Hamilton, the song's writer. He was Ric-Tic Records' excellent producer Al Hamilton (AKA Al Kent). The related label, Wingate Records, had their brother Ronnie Savoy (AKA (Eugene)Ronnie Hamilton. Most of the people working on this record were ex-Motown employees, or current ones, who were regularly moonlighting for Ed Wingate's Golden World/RicTic/Wingate Records. My own record label recorded Freddie Gorman in 1980-82.
Thank you for all the extra information.
The above should read that Rob Reeco (Bob Hamilton) was Al Kent's(Al Hamilton's) brother.
Thanks Robb!
This is true. Rob Reeco was Bob Hamilton. He wrote both of my songs for Golden World.
Nice tune, thanks a lot Clare!
Cheers Hans. I hope to be posting the A side soon too.
Definitely has that Motown vibe...new to me and I like it..as always, thks and be well..
Cheers Ken. I'm glad you like it and I'm really happy it's the first time you've heard it, 56 years after it was recorded. That's what I love about RUclips. Take care.
I'm loving this.... funny to hear this song reminds me of a certain person love her voice 😁🎶jam in out
LOL thank you Dee Dee 😁 💕🎵

Polish. That's what I think this disc needs. It has many positives going for it. Strong lead vocal who takes the lead. Backup that assists her but does not take over. Also they repeat the theme the hook line which helps the listener remember what the title is. Great? I has possibilities, it just needs a little polish on it. Do we get to hear the on something else? Maybe we did and we just don't know it. Thanks for sharing it was a nice trip down the lane with the girls.
This is a great song, really like that backing.
Thanks Dave. I really love the backing too.
Another one in the "shoulda been a hit" category.
Thank you. Yes, it definitely should of been a hit record. Cheers for commenting.
Nice girl group tune Clare...pic of The Elites is correct.. Back is Pam Rushman, centre left is Patti Gilson as you said then Dianne Norrod... A little correction though... Patti did join in the background clapping for The Reflections tune however they did not do the clapping on her track...Patti says it was that long a go.. Golden World taken over by Motown that she only remembers 3 young black ladies doing the back ground vocals... I presume it could possibley have been The Andantes? Anyway hope everything is well with you xxx
Thank you for the info about the hand claps and Patti's memories of it. I'd read who the other two members of the group were. I just wasn't sure if it was the same Patti Gilson or not. To be honest I thought she would be black. I've been told the A side is as good, if not better. I will be surprised if I prefer it to this though. I'm hoping to have it very soon to upload. I'm afraid I lost my mum on August 24th, so I'm not at my best at the mo, but I'm okay thanks. Hope you are well and getting through this sh*tty year we're all having xx
@@clareons so sorry to hear that xxx I will send a private e-mail message to you shortly xx
patti is my grandma
This is Patti. Another big correction. Dianne Norrwold was not a group member. I don't know how her name was included. In the picture is Left Pam Rushman, center Patti Gilson and on the right is Ann Tobias.
@@patriciatirpak3070 Thank you for the correction xx
Although I like this one a lot, I like the other side, "Pulling Petals From A Daisy" a lot more. I wonder why it hasn't been uploaded onto The Internet in all these years?
I'm gonna try and get a soundfile of the A side soon. I've never heard it before, if I like it I will post it on here.
@@clareons If you like 1964-65 Motown, you will like it!
I've just posted the A side Pulling Petals ( From A Daisy )
✨✨😍
Thank you 😊
Actually, The Elites had two releases:
Hi-Lite
106 You Mean So Much To Me / Tell Him Again
108 Have You Got A Love / Trouble In Mind
Thanks. I'll add their second single to my description.
Thanks for uploading this, but the bass is turned up so high that we can't even hear the great Funk Brothers' instrumentation (we really can't hear the music). It's a shame. Your upload of "Don't You Tell A Lie" was fine. Why can't this one have similar settings?
The bass on both sides of the golden World record and Golden World's master tape was fine. Whoever recorded this put their base setting up as high as it goes.
