If you haven't already replaced your Sawyer, the Platypus QuickDraw has an integrity test that lets you know if it's been compropmised. That combined with the caps on both sides have made it my go-to.

Store your fiber water filter in the house!
Boiling water is a terrible way to purify. It works, but takes so long between the boil time and the time it takes to cool. If that's your only option, it's better than nothing, but I would only resort to boiling to purify in a survival situation.
6:30 When I switched from a tent to a hammock kit, my first night on a real trip with my hammock, it took me several minutes to recall how I had practiced securing my hammock to the suspension. I had done it several times and practiced my knots over and over, but when you're fatigued after a long day on the trail, your brain can go to mush. Also, I have found that searching for a tree limb for your bear hang is often easiest before you eat. Find your tree limb and hang your line so that when you're done with your dinner and bedtime routine, all you have to do is walk over to it, clip your food bag to it, hoist it up and tie it off. Finding a tree limb in the dark when you're hungry can lead to "good enough" hangs that are not actually good enough, just because you're exhausted and you get lazy because you're ready to crash for the night.

I'm no expert, but Suunto, Silva, and Brunton are reputable. I've had this Brunton for a while and it wasn't too expensive, but I couldn't find a link for the exact one which is why I didn't include it. Sorry about that.

Given that a knife is the single most important tool you should bring backpacking, it's probably a good idea to make sure it's clean and sharp.
