    in the game, Jinx was originally considered crazy, akin to a league of legends "Joker". After watching this you have to wonder if Powder hasn't always struggled with depression/anxiety/mental illness, especially since everyone calls her a "jinx". In the episodes, whenever she has a sad moment, its always almost like she was fully breaking. When Vi told her to stay behind when they went to find Vander, the way she was crying was almost like a full on mental breakdown. And when Vi got up to leave at the end. Powder almost immediately disowned Vi as her sister. I like the way they are going about this story with Jinx, as a Jinx main in league, I loved the first 3 and cant wait to binge the new 3 episodes.

    • @Sueiza
      @Sueiza 2 года назад +67

      Given her past trauma from the death of her parents and the environment she was forced to grow up in, it's very likely that she always has struggled with mental illness. At the very least, a deep fear of abandonment and feelings of worthlessness. I wonder if there's some even bigger trauma we'll find out about that leads to Jinx's full break into madness or if the League team will pull back and ret-con Jinx into a more sympathetic and redeemable character.

    • @onsetaugust
      @onsetaugust 2 года назад +7

      The lore isn't in any way central to the game, so playing is in no way necessary. The game is a 5v5 MOBA competition - 2 teams face off on opposite sides of a symmetrical map, pushing "waves" of minions to destroy objectives, take map control, and eventually break into enemy base to destroy their home "nexus." Its a strategic game with lots of room for individual skill expression, but largely a team game like basketball or something.
      The lore isn't present in the gameplay at all. What Riot (the producer) has done, is created an insanely extensive world of lore and story around the 151 playable characters in League of Legends. None of that is necessary to enjoy the game, but it is still so incredibly rich. In fact, I wouldn't know anything about Vi or Jinx's (Powder's) backstory if it weren't for my wife who was into the characters for their lore. Even though I've spent 2,000 hours playing League to climb the ranked ladder.
      What Riot is doing is literally building an empire -world building that will rival the likes of Marvel, Star Wars, or DC. They've taken League of Legends as a competitive game and used that as a bouncepad to engineer an entire universe full of rich and complex characters, stories, adventures, politics and ideologies. Since then, they've expanded the world to include an Auto Battler game, a Digital Collectible Card game, a mobile MOBA, and are working on a Fighting game, and even an MMORPG. In the meantime, we get masterpieces like ARCANE, which draw from the lush backstories the character development writers have been cultivating for the past 12 years since the games inception. I can't wait for what they release next.

They have shown us time and time again that they are able to produce well directed cinematics with great visuals and animation. As well as shown us that they can create an interesting world and are capable of writing great stories and characters. Also they make great music too which is demonstrated in the series as well.

    Silco is such an amazing villain already, reminds me of a Killmonger with more personal depth, Vander and him are two sides of the same coin, one wanting to protect the already downtrodden and give them the most happiness they can have under the impoverished circumstances the people live in Zaun, and Silco willing to do whatever it takes to get them out there and suffer in short term to grant the people of Zaun the same living standards at the ones above.
    Whats even better is that he isn't even actively manipulating Powder, what he really saw was just himself in her, someone that was betrayed by their "sibling" (I assume it was more of a deep comradery between Vander and Silco) despite doing what they thought was best. You can totally see that the way he looks at Vander and just gently hugged Powder back to comfort her.
    Honestly as someone who played the game and assumed that the most I was gonna get was some fanservice and beautiful visuals, they really delivered as one of the, if not the best, Videogame adaptations that have been made, closely followed by Castlevania

      Yes the conversations feels so much more natural as it should be. It allows us as the viewer to figure it out for ourselves by picking things up in the dialogue, especially coming from someone who has never played the games before. it’s always felt odd to me when characters go on tangents explaining information that’s already known to them And others since it’s their world And in situations that don’t really call for it. Which is why a lot of writers will have the main character be someone who is also un familiar with the world so that we can learn through them.

      Yes, can we say something about Silco's voice actor here at the end? I love the way that he is mustache-twirling at "hello little girl" and then is totally disarmed by Powder and the sibling 'betrayal' connection. His reading of "It's okay...we'll show them...we'll show them all" is so honest and vulnerable, you actually feel his humanity for the first time AND you can imagine how he could form a real relationship with Powder.

That being said, all I can say is wow. Gorgeous animation, the facial expressions they pull off with these characters are so real, and the voice acting is absolutely friggin' top tier. I don't know who the young actress is for Powder, but my god she acted her heart out in that final sequence. To say I'm hooked, would be a massive understatement. What an out-of-nowhere gem this show is very quickly becoming.

    The 3 episodes a week strategy is probably Riot's decision, not Netflix's. Riot is also having a major event across all of their games, and releasing weekly patches with in-game loot and content to coincide with each act, which is probably why the episodes are being released like this.

    I come back to your reaction often. I think, in media, we've become so desensitized to losing strong male heroes in the service of stories (Vander). We hate it. But we almost expect it. Anticipate it. But the way Vi funnels her grief onto Powder, the projection of that, and then the way she slaps her sister. I wasn't ready. And it's interesting to see two other grown men react in such a similar way.
    We can go on and on about the writing now that we've all seen the show's entirety. It's remarkable.
    But this chapter's end is some of the most emotionally crushing -everything- I've ever seen on screen. The impact of that slap took me back in my seat. And the look, and sounds, of Powder slowly shattering under her dawning realization of culpability - combined with Vi's aggressive assertion and blame and grief are just absolutely heart wrenching. There was honesty in the way the writing chose to portray the fallout of this.
    There was honesty in your reaction, too.

  • @atb2674

    I think the reason the final scenes hit so hard every time no matter what, is because on a primal psychological level humans will always have a reaction to this. Similar to if you play a whimpering puppy around ur dog it’s gonna start stressing. The fact the voice actor for powder was like actually 12 around the age of her character, and the performance she put was so real, I cannot physically stop from tears coming up. What an amazing piece of television to make a visceral experience for any viewer. Like if u know no English and watched this you’d still be hurt when Vi punches a crying Powder.

    I think the show does a amazing job in portraying how Powders mind work. In episode 1 during the brawl in the alley and when the bomb goes off in episode 3 everything slows down. The music becomes serene and she almost seems calm. Almost like the chaotic and disruptive helps her cope. It is by no means a healthy response, but I think it explains a lot about her.

    Vi, Jinx (aka Powder), Jayce, Viktor, Heimerdinger (cute professor), Singed, Ekko (little man) are in the actual game. There are theories that Vander is also a character in the game, but in a different form… the rest of the characters are made up. Riot absolutely knocked it out of the park adding Avengers amount of characters into a show.

  • @Trichromanic
    @Trichromanic 2 года назад +2

    Regarding what Jayce and Viktor were working on, they were just trying to prove the theory that science can create a device that can harness and control magical energy. They weren't trying to create any specific kind of effect with the device, only prove that it could keep the magical energy from running rampant and exploding, channeling it in a controlled way. Theory proven, so now the next step is developing devices that can create specific effects using the technique.

    This show is definitely a better drama if you don't already know the characters, because knowing who in the cast is an established character leads to knowing who is going to 'make it' by the end. Knowing who is who already, I see the new characters and I just know that they have to die or otherwise be gone by the end of the story.
    For what Jayce and Viktor made, it was based on the teleport spell that saved Jayce in the past. It doesn't really foretell what the magical effect it's creating is as they're freefloating, but it teleported one coin/cog from one side to another in a second and it's pretty easy to just brush that off in the moment.

    • @Sueiza
      @Sueiza 2 года назад

      You know the fate of the main cast, but anyone we're introduced to doesn't necessarily have to die or stay gone forever. This show is an amazing opportunity to 're-introduce' some of these new characters in the lore's present day.
