After I spoke this song was played, our minister was sitting directly in front of me. He had never heard the song before and I could see him listening to the words. By the last chorus he was saying the words to the song. When the funeral was over he came and talked to me about what I had said and what a wonderful song. I must have listened to it a 100 times before her funeral with the thought that if I heard it enough it wouldn’t hit me so hard. I was wrong…. 10 months later and it still hits me. What a song and what a performer…. Simply the best!

How can you not love this guy? Such a beautiful song. I’ve lost both of my parents - and my wife’s parents as well. This is such a gorgeous, touching song. I cry every time I listen to it… and I love it. Thank you, Ed!
I remember listening to this song for the first time.. fuck, I cried my eyes out thinking about my mom. I'm so afraid of the idea of her not here by my side. I feel like she's the only person who truly cares about me in this world.
I first listened to it on a train. The other people probably thought what’s wrong with her :D I tried to hard holding the tears back. Must have made the funniest faces

It's just heartwrenching to see Ed hold back tears as he's performing, he's normally such a playful and lighthearted person and always joking around even with some of his music videos 😢
Halsik Ed mentioned it in interviews that his maternal grandmother died and the song is sung from his mothers perspective, plus his fathers name is John, so he would sing father, not his dads first name. Ed's Irish paternal grandmother from his song 'Nancy Mulligan' is still alive and is 93 yrs old
I prey to God that whoever is reading this for you to know you are not alone You are loved and you are beautiful You are worth your every breath And you are worth it all Please remember that because your home ♥️
Is it weird that before I read this I just had a chat with my extremely corrupt grandmother who thinks she can do whatever she wants to me just cause she spent money on even though I didn't need it since I have my parents? Well hopefully I'll be able to enjoy that in the near future
The fact no guitar was used shows how vulnerable he was allowing himself to be. I just lost my grandmother and randomly found this performance, but damn does it resonate with me. It's a great feeling to cry and laugh at the same time. I, like Ed know our loved ones are in a better place. It doesn't change the hurt we have from them no longer being present, however, we take comfort in knowing we'll see them again and they are watching us above. Hallelujah indeed.
This came out right after my mom and I lost grandma and it is one of the songs that got us through. I'm sorry for your loss. They are both looking down from heaven at us every day!
I lost my mother a year ago yesterday. Every time I think of this song, I can't help but tear up. ❤️ Spread your wings as you go, and when God takes you back, we'll say Hallelujah, you're home ❤️ I miss you, mom.
May U, me too. Same exact day. I miss my mom terribly too. For you and me, it's not a coincidence that this beautiful and heartfelt song was posted on the day that it was. Hope you find comfort in it as I do. Blessings and love to you.
Lost my mom two weeks ago and just discovered this song today . I have playing it over and over . I don’t really show my emotions but “ every time I blink my eyes , tears are coming “ love you Ma and thank ED for this song …
[LYRICS] I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill I threw the day-old tea from the cup Packed up the photo album Matthew had made Memories of a life that's been loved Took the "Get Well Soon" cards and stuffed animals Poured the old ginger beer down the sink Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down." But, mum, there's a tear every time that I blink Oh, I'm in pieces. It's tearing me up but I know A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved So, I'll sing Hallelujah, You were an angel in the shape of my mum When I fell down you'd be there holding me up Spread your wings as you go And when God takes you back He'll say, "Hallelujah, you're home." I fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case John said he'd drive, then put his hand on my cheek And wiped a tear from the side of my face And I hope that I see the world as you did 'cause I know A life with love is a life that's been lived So, I'll sing Hallelujah, You were an angel in the shape of my mum When I fell down you'd be there holding me up Spread your wings as you go, when God takes you back He'll say, "Hallelujah, you're home." Hallelujah, You were an angel in the shape of my mum You got to see the person I have become Spread your wings and I know That when God took you back, he said, "Hallelujah, you're home."
My mother passed away last week. This is the first time hearing this song. I have replayed this at least 10 times! She raised 10 kids. She lost 3 of her kids in my lifetime. Her heart was broken. We miss her dearly. She is home, hallelujah!

Olenka Biki I agree with you completely. Best singer since Elvis but a lot more talented because he sings, writes his own songs, and has himself for a band with a loop pedal. Elvis would be impressed with the kid if he was alive today.
The Campbell Channel the message behind this is so upsetting as wel😭 He wrote it because his grandmother passed away😭 I always sing this to remember my grandad😢

Ed, your mum is smiling at you now. Her love shines brightly through your beautiful life, your words in your songs and through your gifted voice that gives new life and hope. When you do those things, your mum is not dead. She's alive in you. Well done, good and faithful servant. God bless you, Robert
@@-.a9942 Thank you for your helpful note. I actually knew that fact about his grandmother's death. Interestingly I also learned that Ed calls both his grandmother and his mother "mum". At first I thought it was his mother because of his use of "mum", but later watched another video where he shared it was in fact his grandmother who died which explains why I used his word, "mum". One of Ed's best songs, I think. Blessings.

"You where an angle in the shape of my father when I fell down you'd be there holding me up Spreading your wings as you go and when God taked you back we'll say Hallelijah You're home" - Ed Sheeran
Dear Mr Sheeran, your mum must have been amazing to have raised a sin like you. I lost my DAD he was my superhero! I had to wipe a tear from his face whilst I held his hand as he passed. Love is the reward we get for having beautiful "MUMS AND DADS"
"You are an angel in the shape of my mom". I'm 70, a foreign war veteran, one of seven boys (no sister), husband and father of two wonderful adult children. I still thank my mother - every day - and hope she hears it from her throne on high.
I just need to call my mom and say I love her. I usually skipped this song in Divide. Not because it's bad, but because I cannot fight tears when I hear it, it just tears me apart! Now I listen to it and don't even fight with my emotions, this song is AMAZING! Ed is gorgeous as usual and the global success award was 100% deserved!
Rina Fedorovich true my grandma passed away after a long fight of cancer in may last year and when this song has been released, i knew that i would always connect it with her 💔
My mom and granny are alive (thank God!), but my mom works abroad and she is far away, I miss her. And this song reminds me that I need to show my love to her because one day I will regret about not doing it. Sorry for your granny, she is obviously your guarding angel now.
I am very happy that he did this song for an event like this. It shows to all the people that maybe only know shape of you that his music was never mainly about fast pop songs. I am very looking forward to the upcoming album (Subtract (?)). From what I have heard Ed saying about it, it will be amazing~
No, I really mean the upcoming album. The one after "divide". Probably called "subtract". Ed said that it will be a lo fi album, no pop. Which is amazing in m opinion. He writes for the album since he started to write for his first album "plus". Every year he writes one song for his 4th album (and maybe last album before his hiatus). He said that he wants to stop touring and making records full time when he is a father. And that could happen soon. I think very high of Ed. He just knows when to settle and also when to set an "end" to things, before the world (media) does. He will be a very good dad.
Nikki • Notes I didn’t think you realized his Divide album was out is all. I wasn’t trying to say you didn’t know anything about Ed. Glad to know you enjoy his music, too.
This song will always hold a special place in my heart. Got a phone call from my dad that grandma passed away peacefully. She was such a loving person and she always had a smile on her face. Love ya grandma, gonna sing this song and think about that smile every time I do so!
God damn how lucky you are. My grandma's such a corrupt person so I can't say the same thing for her. But my other grandmother was a real good person. Passed away last year.
I’m so happy he sang it at an awards show!! It’s always been one of my favorites from ➗so it makes me so happy that other people that don’t really listen to the album get to hear it!
I just lost my mom two weeks ago and this song resonates with every cell of my being. I am so grateful for these beautiful words that are helping me and thousands of people who lost their loved ones to go through this pain with love in the hearts...Thank you Ed.
I think this is the first time I've seen him perform on stage without his guitar. He's said he doesn't know what to do with his hands when he doesn't have his guitar, but he did a great job. Fantastic performance!
I said I wasn't going to cry today, being the first anniversary since I lost my wife on 7/16/2017, but damn it Ed, you sure know how to bring it out of me.
I lost my mom not even a month ago and found this song the last couple weeks of her life and have played it every week since. This song is truly beautiful and has helped me through these last couple of months. It always makes me cry but it’s a good cry because now my mom is “home”
I've tried many time to sing this song and i manage to go through the first verse, but once i hit the chorus, i jus break down and can't finish it.. not sure how Ed did this entire song without breaking down! he is absolutely AMAZING!!! Gave us a song that is helping people get closure in a beautiful way! LOVE you Ed and thank you for his amazing gift.
Ed Sheeran is really talented but if you know Beethoven you would know Beethoven is on a whole different level 😂 I'm sorry but pop music just cannot compare to classical music
Damazen I love ed's music but Beethoven is just something else entirely. Actually, comparing them doesn't really work as their music is vastly different from each other.
I have honestly never heard a single song from him until now. My sister sent this link to me ahead of Thanksgiving. We started the fight for mom's life last year at this time and lost her in March. The song literally reads like every step we went through, but I have given it up to faith. Hallelujah. You're home. Here's to that day when we are all back together.
When he performed that song here in Zurich, many people actually brought flowers to the concert and held them up high. It was a beautiful moment and I'm so happy I took a polaroid of it (Yes, I actually took a polaroid photo at a concert)
I had this played when my beautiful mum was laid to rest. Makes me cry every time I listen to it. The words really hit home she is no longer here. Miss her so much it physically hurts😢
Supermarket Flowers is about Ed's maternal grandmother and sung from his mothers perspective. Ed's song 'Afire Love' from his 2nd album Multiply X is about his grandfather William Sheeran and played at his funeral. The song 'Nancy Mulligan' on the Divide ÷ deluxe album is about Ed's Irish paternal grandparents William and Nancy.
KayBee18 yes it is the 'angel in the shape of my mum' is referring to Ed's mothers mother, which is his grandmother who died. Ed has even said so himself
LN well it is, even Ed has said so.. song is about his maternal grandmother Shirley who died. John is Ed's father ie his mothers husband, and Matthew is his older brother John said he’d drive, then put his hand on my cheek Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
The love he had for his nan and the sadness of his mum from the passing of her own mum and him being able to acknowledge, process and then make it easy for us to understand is mad, what a talent and loving man

So was all this what you expected. It's different when you listen to the music you love. Never expect it anyway.
I just find amazing that ed decided to play such a personal song instead of shape of you or one of his singles, thats why i admire him bc he doesn't care of what people would think, he does it for love and for the music.
My gosh, this kid Ed comes out with a hit after hit...
coltdogster, I'm pretty she knows that. She was referring to the singles (I wish this was a single).
coltdogster, Garbage?? I think the fuck not.
coltdogster, When tf Ed's music became garbage, you piece of garbage?! 🖕
coltdogster....or maybe an "overrated garbage" for you but not for 15M other homo sapiens.

The ultimate act of respect for an artist is silence. Listen to the crowd. This is a masterclass in being a star.
There was no respect, all i heard was stupid girls screaming out during the song.
also cause its the brits not a concert, most people in there are celebrities not crazy teenage girls lol
My mother’s mother died last night. This song helped me come to terms as she lay on her deathbed when we came home from the hospital.
I'm so sorry. may you have comfort in your memories and may she rest in eternal peace
I'm sorry to hear this. My heartfelt condolences to your family. God bless you.
Time can heal...RIP for your mom
She will be eternally your angel

I'm really happy that he sang this song instead of his really popular songs like perfect. He's really come a long way and I'm very proud of him. Keep it up ed, ur #1.
Thanks for this wonderful song. We played it at my grandma's funeral... I always think of her when I listen to it now.
Cindy Panda im so sorry for your loss, but that is so sweet 💗

Ed, you have come so far, and the fact that you got through this song without breaking down completely just proves what a strong man you are.
I love you so much and will always support you.
Big hugs, Sheerios, love you guys!
God bless Ed! So beautiful. ❤❤❤
The tears are running down my cheeks. It's been four years now since I lost my Mom and this encompasses all of my feelings. Ed, you have such a gift...don't ever stop, you touch my heart.

Beautiful Tribute 🕊️
(The song is actually about Ed's grandmother and is written from the point of view of his mum. )

Ed told...
“She was one of the nicest women you’d ever meet and she was my mom’s mom. It was written for my mom’s point of view; it was choosing loads of specific things and then just finishing it as a song.”
“My grandmother was very ill during the time I was making the record and passed away at the end of me making the record so we wrote this song as a tribute and just left it on.

I’m so sorry for your loss, my mom passed away this past summer. I understand your pain
Ingrid Fig Same. I actually skip this song when I listen to the album bc it makes me feel so sad and I cry every time
omg same!
I felt the same.
Me too.😪
I first listened to it on a train. The other people probably thought what’s wrong with her :D I tried to hard holding the tears back. Must have made the funniest faces
LYRICS
I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill
I threw the day old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink
Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
I fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face
I hope that I see the world as you did cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person that I have become
Spread your wing
And I know that when God took you back he said Hallelujah
You're home

Love you Ed😍
Ed sheerN
his voice terribly shakened
It's just heartwrenching to see Ed hold back tears as he's performing, he's normally such a playful and lighthearted person and always joking around even with some of his music videos 😢
Thank you Ed for being who you are. Please never change!!!
21stellaluna he already has lol
Alex how has he changed?.. I have not seen..
Alex Rodacan How has he changed, I would really like to know.
Supermarket Flowers is about Ed's maternal grandmother and sung from his mothers perspective.John is Ed's father and Matthew is Ed's older brother
Veronica M So her grandma die?
Ed's grandmother died and this song was played at her funeral
Why u think this is from Ed's mother perspective? Did Ed mention that in interview?
Halsik Ed mentioned it in interviews that his maternal grandmother died and the song is sung from his mothers perspective, plus his fathers name is John, so he would sing father, not his dads first name.
Ed's Irish paternal grandmother from his song 'Nancy Mulligan' is still alive and is 93 yrs old
Halsik Yes, on the Breakfast Club interview
I prey to God that whoever is reading this for you to know you are not alone
You are loved and you are beautiful
You are worth your every breath
And you are worth it all
Please remember that because your home ♥️
Thanks this was adorable. You're too good
Mycaina Paul Thank you for this.❤️
Okay, wholesome, but it's pray not prey. Prey is whole other word. Saying that you prey to God basically means you're hunting him down.
Is it weird that before I read this I just had a chat with my extremely corrupt grandmother who thinks she can do whatever she wants to me just cause she spent money on even though I didn't need it since I have my parents? Well hopefully I'll be able to enjoy that in the near future
🙏🙏🙏
He is a legend xx
I lost my mother a year ago yesterday. Every time I think of this song, I can't help but tear up.

go ahead and say that im wrong but for me ypur comments dont mean anything because I just love him so much
Wow, best comment ever.
Olenka Biki I agree with you completely. Best singer since Elvis but a lot more talented because he sings, writes his own songs, and has himself for a band with a loop pedal. Elvis would be impressed with the kid if he was alive today.

Ed, your mum is smiling at you now. Her love shines brightly through your beautiful life, your words in your songs and through your gifted voice that gives new life and hope. When you do those things, your mum is not dead. She's alive in you. Well done, good and faithful servant. God bless you, Robert
His grandmother is the one who died. He wrote this song from his mother perspective. Your comment is beautiful though.
Blessings.
Ed is the best artist I have ever heard I'm 60 this year so I've heard a lot. I'll never get to see him but I want him to know his music has had so much meaning for me. Dear Mr Sheeran, your mum must have been amazing to have raised a sin like you.
I lost my DAD he was my superhero! I had to wipe a tear from his face whilst I held his hand as he passed. Love is the reward we get for having beautiful "MUMS AND DADS"
God bless you .
"You are an angel in the shape of my mom". I'm 70, a foreign war veteran, one of seven boys (no sister), husband and father of two wonderful adult children. I still thank my mother - every day - and hope she hears it from her throne on high.
The 4.4k people that disliked this video had tears in their eyes so they couldn't see the difference between the two. Great song, love you ed!
Electrik Wow,you made me cry even more.😭
I just need to call my mom and say I love her. I usually skipped this song in Divide. Not because it's bad, but because I cannot fight tears when I hear it, it just tears me apart! Now I listen to it and don't even fight with my emotions, this song is AMAZING! Ed is gorgeous as usual and the global success award was 100% deserved!
Rina Fedorovich true my grandma passed away after a long fight of cancer in may last year and when this song has been released, i knew that i would always connect it with her 💔
Rina Fedorovich its OK to cry every now and then in life!! 😉 I sometimes skip it, sometimes Not, depends on the mood!! Its so beautiful!! 😋❤️
My mom and granny are alive (thank God!), but my mom works abroad and she is far away, I miss her. And this song reminds me that I need to show my love to her because one day I will regret about not doing it. Sorry for your granny, she is obviously your guarding angel now.
This makes me cry every time... my favorite song on divide💖
Rylee Mehler Sorry for your loss
Rylee Mehler, mine is Dive, but I like all of them
I swear Ed writes the most beautiful songs
I am very happy that he did this song for an event like this. It shows to all the people that maybe only know shape of you that his music was never mainly about fast pop songs. I am very looking forward to the upcoming album (Subtract (?)). From what I have heard Ed saying about it, it will be amazing~
Nikki • Notes It’s actually already out and amazing! Try Spotify or his RUclips channel 😊
Mckensie Chancellor nah divide is out. What are you on about
No, I really mean the upcoming album.
Daniel O Hartaigh I was referring to Divide bc I thought the original post (pre edit) was referring to Divide.
Hema Malik That's exactly what I thought !!! And without his quitar...it's like a part of him is missing.

I said I wasn't going to cry today, being the first anniversary since I lost my wife on 7/16/2017, but damn it Ed, you sure know how to bring it out of me.
Thorinox stay strong brother
I lost my mom not even a month ago and found this song the last couple weeks of her life and have played it every week since. This song is truly beautiful and has helped me through these last couple of months. It always makes me cry but it’s a good cry because now my mom is “home”
May your Mom Rest in Peace.

Absolutely love this song, love the choral backing as well. Very subtle but beautiful. Powerful lyrics, beautiful melody.
this man. this man has a fucking talent. remember u r living and seen his art so close. he will be like a beethoven one day
Damazen already surpassed beethoven
..
Really
🙏❤🙏
For me personally, this is his best performance I've ever seen... I can't count how many times I’ve replayed this song.
I am 70 years old and his music and his music tugs at my heart. Thanks, Ed.

Jeezus your post just made me choke up.
May her soul rest in peace 🙏
I saw him live on last monday, he mentioned he was going to sing this for the BRITS in memory of his grandmother
Peter Cruz I know he's so thoughtful and a lovely person!... Definitely beta the beiber😂😂😂
Veronica M I don’t think this song is sung from his mom’s perspectives!
It’s not from his mom’s perspective. “You were an angel in the shape of my mom”
KayBee18 yes it is the 'angel in the shape of my mum' is referring to Ed's mothers mother, which is his grandmother who died. Ed has even said so himself
LN well it is, even Ed has said so.. song is about his maternal grandmother Shirley who died. John is Ed's father ie his mothers husband, and Matthew is his older brother
John said he’d drive, then put his hand on my cheek
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Ed has got a very specific voice. I think people don't give him enough credit for it.
