Fishing From The Shore In Greece, Something Different...
On a recent holiday to Kos, in Greece we decided to do a little fishing and filming, for anything we could catch... It would have been rude not too... right...?
Here's something a little different from the norm, so hope you enjoy it! Apologies for the sound, was difficult with the wind and the waves!

Hey ,nice vid man. Some infos for the fish since you asked , their names in Greek language are
1st one is called Manali, size you cauge is the average.
2nd one is called Refuge cause is a foreing fish in our waters and came from suez canal, size you caught is the average, poisonous on the top and bottom fins (very lucky you didnt got stinged) gives quite strong pain but it goes away after 20-30 mins.
3rd one is called Salpa, size you caught is the top size that can grow , maybe 4-5 cm more
    Cheers

Great video Steve! I love ultra lite catch and release fishing for small fish, lots of fun. Always a bit easier to release though if you pinch your barbs! I fish the beaches of Maui, Hawaii with ultra lite tackle and its a blast! Be well and fish on! Nothing like fishing in your bathing suit! Mark in Oregon

Great vid mate, I fished magaluf last year using the same method and had the same issue with clever fish taking the bread off the hook. I went back to the hotel and got some mussels, they worked a treat and I ended up with some nice sea bream (only small) great fun in the sun

My son and I are going to KOS again this year August 2018. Exactly the same place you are in this video, Kefalos. Taking a tele-travel rod and small box of tackle like yourself, however I have decide to go a little further up to your right to the harbour. Really looking forward to it. I can't wait to see my lads face when he experiences his first catch

that kind of fishing is better two to three hours before sunset or just after sunrise , use smaller hook ( the straight ones) and you have to read the beach to choose the right place ... there are some videos on youtube how to choose the right spot when fishing on the sandy beach ... for the bait it's ok , you can use the dough as well (ad some freshwater to the bread to make a dough) but you have to mix bread and some dirt or sand plus fresh or canned sardines to attract fish before starting fishing.( half a hour before) to attract the bigger ones..

Jep, that's right ;) Well... for bait fishing(from shore, never used a boat) I mainly used size 1 to 0/2 hooks, just 50cm leader(~20'). On a regular bottom fishing rig, just a big weight, a pearl over the swirrel. Nothing special but sometimes I let the bait float a little over the ground!
    Hope I helped :)

We are on our last day of our hols in Paros and Antiparos. And I've learnt quite a lot in the 2 weeks me and my son have been fishing here. Namely the ten hooks on one line the locals used. Perhaps a bit barbaric as the barbed hooks get stuck everywhere in the fish but the locals are eating the fish not putting them back as we were. So we had a go. You can get these ten hook rigs in most fishing shops. One shop in Naousa and another in Parikia. I crushed all the barbs so I wasn't ripping the fish to pieces and it worked. We were pulling them safely and removing the hooks with ease and putting the fish back. All good fun. We also had a bit of success with one hook but need to be very patient. The fish just seemed to know. Bread is the best. Every bit I threw in they were on... But not my hook....very frustrating somedays. Nothing else worked, though we were told by a local if we go deeper they love shrimp and calamari but we never got the chance. Anyway I hope this helps a few of you. Have fun.

We need more programs like this ,that are aimed at the holiday angler, the trouble now is that every fishing show on telly seems to show the presenter heading out to sea on a boat that costs more for a days fishing than we've paid for our holiday and there things that we've seen over, and over again on telly but don't actually teach us anything .To show what I mean ,take Spain for example ,did you know that you do need a licence for sea fishing even on the cliffs way out of the towns and a licence for the Canaries is not valid for the main land or if you want a licence for some parts of Spain you need to take out insurance as well as well,as wait for it be required to take a hunting exam ( no I'm not joking please take two minutes to check it out ) or the fines can be truly horrific, or the stupid amounts of money holiday companies now charge just for a small rod tube .So please if there are any telly people who see this can we please have more programmes likes this that actually teach the holiday angler on a budget ,with just what is in his suitcase some actual fishing advice.

Just returned from 2 weeks in Kos fishing with light telescopic rod and small and light gear ETC caught all the same species as yourself minus the mullet used bread paste first few times then ventured into Kos town and found A very helpful chap that ran A tackle shop just off the main seafront in Kos harbour were we bought some small ragworm and maggots as he suggested felt weird fishing with maggots in the sea but caught A few small fish the best bait by far was the ragworm though.!
The second fish you caught I had the pleasure of being stung by the top spines and yeah I can confirm that it does hurt a lot and after speaking to a diver they day previous and him saying that there are some toxic fish there I was quite worried but the pain subsided after a few hours thank god.
I would recommend fishing on the bottom with a double paternoster rig nothing special did find that the fish did sometimes bite through my 7lb line though so maybe up the size line next time.

hello, the first fish we call them in Egypt patata fish or sweet potato fish in English ,it's a red sea migrant that moved to the mideterenean sea when the suez canal was dug in 1798 , you catch them on dough, and you must watch for the float tiny drops in order to catch it, because this is how it feeds, it lives within the rocks and is a day fish only, the second one i think of the same kind, those fish have pretty colors and they vary in colors between the first and the second colorings

The thing is that there where much fishery in the aegeis sea arounf greece. So the fish population is in some places drastically smallert and the fishes are not easy to catch. But if you want to catch smaller tuna, barraccuda, bonitos and simillar species the best way is to use jigs witch you cast far out and jig them very fast back. Good too are little baitfish or occtopus fot bait. Heavy gear and bottom rigs. Good for Dentex!

I know these kind of fish very well, but i don,t go fishing for them, i choose better kind of fish. Where i come from the first one is called "trikhoun" its some kind of mackerel i think, u can catch it with dough, better with worms in big sizes, but the best i have tried is with chicken parts. The second one we call it "mwasta" its a species of what u pple call black porgy, n thank god it didn't hit u with it's upper fin coz it would have caused u lot of pain, u can easily catch this kind using dough or sea weed. Third one may get way bigger n has more meat on it, usually caught using worms. The last one lives in sea, n u can find it in rivers too, sometimes u can find it where boats gather because it likes the smell of oil, it gets really big, u can catch one using a lure, or cooked smelly dough.

Any harbor, beach or bit of rocky coast is a potential fishing spot. (I have been living in Greece most of my life, so this is irst hand info).

Sarpa salpa is the generic and specific name of this fish that is also called salema porgy. They can be hallucinogenic if they have eaten a certain alga. The hallucinogen is thought to be concentrated in the head but the flesh may also contain the chemical. Some have postulated that the Romans, deliberately ate the fish for the effects but modern accounts describe the experience of ingesting affected fish as frightening. The level of toxicity may change according to season and I know many Greek people eat these fish to no avail. They are readily available in fish markets there.

Forget about using bread as hook bait. I have fished in the Greek Islands on holiday for years. Find some structure, harbour, rocks, jetty, anything like that and use sweetcorn or pieces of shrimp, sweetcorn size. So long as there is at least 3 feet of water, there will be plenty of fish. I use a 10 foot collapsible rod with a fixed spool reel loaded with 4 pound line and wide gape barbless 10s to 14s with a 3 pound hooklength, with a 2 to 3 bb waggler, feathers are jut as good as floats. My son in law and I generally get abput 20 in a couple of hours.Be very careful of the fish called "Germans" all their spines (all over their body) are toxic. A sting will be painful for 30 minutes but should wear off. These fish are apparently delicious when cooked but I have not tried them.

From The Waters Edge TV Yeah I know mate. It's great you went there and had your fun. My comment wasn't intended to you , but to those who say "meh fishing in greece sucks, fish are bigger where I fish". Greece is a good country to go fishing to if you have a local to tell you the good spots, or a friend with a boat. It's also a great place to do dive-fishing (which is usually how greeks fish large fish in shallow waters) or boat fishing. There is a variety of fish, from small to quite large.

+Efstathios Zavvos ''Greece is a good country to go fishing to if you have a local to tell you the good spots''
Everywhere is a good place for fishing if you know where to fish. The point is that in good fishing places you don't need to.

No, I disagree. There are not many places in the world in which you can exercise any type of fishing within 20-30 miles of your reference point, let alone places easily accessible to Europeans.

This looks really boring, if this was me, I would have gone home within an hour. I'm used to catching bigger fish, in the 1-30 lb range. I barely ever catch anything, but when I do, it's usually a fairly big. I live in florida, so I catch things like redfish, ladyfish and speckled trout. But the most common thing to catch, would probably be stingrays, which are boring to catch when they're small, but bigger ones run, and take line. I use pinfish, and elwy for bait which I catch using a 5 ft cast net. I miss fishing for carp in england, it so easy, you can catch a fish every 5 minutes on a good day. Over here you'll catch a fish once a week on a good month.

Nice one Joshua Couling to me 99.9% of fishing is fun, it's not always about catching big fish, although that is normally the aim. This was just a short session whilst on holiday, nothing serious.

just joking, i guess you were alone.... next time try line and hooks only as system on your rod (no lead at all, it's important too), with piece of squid and mixture of flour and dehydrated cheese (for example, italian product is called "Milo"), mix it with flour and water and try the combo. Adriatic/Aegeian/Mediterranean Sea is clear and fish can see the line (lead as well), so, try with 0,18 - 0,20 - 0,22 max max!! sorry for tarzan english mate, but this will do the trick for the fish you caught there, trust me. I was born on Adriatic coast, it's the same fish and same approach for fishing, more or less. :)

Wow just seeing this out of the box ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
