In June 2013, a group of friends launched a high-altitude near space balloon a few miles from Tuba City, Arizona. The amazing footage of the Grand Canyon area was LOST, then found two years later by an Arizona hiker. Enjoy the video of our launch preparations, flight footage, and some data analysis of the flight.
Max altitude: 98,664 ft (30.1 km)
Time of flight: 1 hour, 38 minutes
Payload: GoPro Hero3, Sony Camcorder, Samsung Galaxy Note II phone. The GoPro and camcorder were recording video footage, while the phone was taking still images.

From Reddit: The whole project took myself and four friends a couple months of planning. We almost canceled the whole thing because helium cost 4x more than we were budgeting. As for the communications and attempted recovery (warning, about to get technical):
We used GPS on a smartphone to continuously log the phone's location on its memory card. The standard GPS receiver these days can track your phone well above 100,000 ft - there used to be a limitation of 60,000 ft but that was recently lifted. The harder issue was to figure out how the phone can communicate to us. We used an app (myTracks or something similar, I forgot) to have the phone text us its GPS location once it got signal as it was returning to Earth (about ~3000 ft altitude).
We planned our June 2013 launch at a specific time and place such that the phone was projected to land in an area with cell coverage. The problem was that the coverage map we were relying on (looking at you, AT&T) was not accurate, so the phone never got signal as it came back to Earth, and we never heard from it. We didn't know this was the problem at the time - we thought our trajectory model was far off and it landed in a signal dead zone (turns out the model was actually quite accurate). The phone landed ~50 miles away from the launch point, from what I recall. It's a really far distance considering there's hardly any roads over there!
TWO YEARS LATER, in a twist of ironic fate, a woman who works at AT&T was on a hike one day and spotted our phone in the barren desert. She brings it to an AT&T store, and they identify my friend's SIM card. We got the footage and data a few weeks later!

I like the way the video completely fails to mention the camera was missing and not found for 2 years or the mention of the story of how it was found.
The phone was not damaged. It just landed where there was no service. It was found by a hiker 2 years later. They should have included all of that.
Although I have seen many videos like this, it amazes me every single time.

Thank you for the epic view of the Grand Canyon Lichtenberg Figure! Your view shows the distinct charge separation left behind from what I believe was an overhead diocotron instability moving over this area and heavily involved in forming the canyon and surrounding areas in antiquity.
I love Arizona so much I love every inch of it and know it well . It was awesome to see it from that balloon.

One piece of advice. instead of frame interpolation for your time lapse, use frame dropping. The ghosting of overlaid frames is rather distracting.

+Toxxi Lox The Balloon as it rises higher and higher it grows really big because of the lack of pressure. It eventually gets so big it essentially disintegrates (pops)

+Toxxi Lox This balloon didn't make it into space. It went to the stratosphere. Most space debris burns up before it gets very far into the stratosphere.

+Pablo C. look up weather balloons this project essentially used a smaller version of one of those to take their camera up. As the balloon rises the atmospheric pressure drops but the gas inside the balloon is the same. This mechanism allows the balloon to expand because there is less pressure pushing in on it as the balloon rises up. Eventually the balloon reaches a point that it can't expand anymore so it pops. As far as the heat I believe you are referring to rentry friction and the pressure wave that supersonic objects incur when they enter our atmosphere from outer space. That's not what happen here it never left our atmosphere nor did this balloon even reach the Karman Line which is around 100 km above sea level. wasn't even near the edge of our inner space. But like the other guy said for most people it was space.

+Katsumi You can search for any video like this and you'll see that they used the "fish-eye" lens, or something like this... You can see that the horizon oscillate between flat, curved, and sometimes it get concave! (Just answering your question, i'm not adept of this theory.)

Do you need FAA clearance to send something above a certain altitude?
No apporval is required as long as you follow restrictions in place. Judging by the video, they broke at least one by using the phone more than likely as the GPS tracker...even though they claim it was for still images.
+thechosendude If you check the reddit link in the details, they do mention the phone is used as a GPS. But if it's just receiving the GPS signals (and then maybe uploading final coordinates later over a cellular network when it's got reception again) and not a transponder, would that cause any issues?
Max Johnson It falls under §22.925, which prohibits cell usage in airspace. It's actually governed by FCC, not FAA. There are many issues, continuously debated, about risk of air-to-surface cellular hazards. That said, it's still illegal. The GPS doesn't make it illegal, the usage of having cellular connection does. The UHF bands of cell phones broadcasts for miles, and is stronger in air with minimal interference.

That's one of the requirements of launching something like this: You either need to ensure the balloon will burst or provide some surefire way of cutting the payload away from the balloon. Launching a payload that will drift up there for days until the helium leaks away is not legal.
so how do they regulate these things, it seems easy to just release anything into the sky, i mean how would they trace the baloon back to you, this is interesting.

I know this is over a year old but, you cant see any satelites etc. because its way to low ^^ this ballon only got to the stratosphere (30.000 km) when satelites are flying in a hight about 36.000 km.
Do you want to watch 70 minutes of it slowly going up? I actually like the edited version, so we see the highlights. However, I'd like to see the whole thing too. Maybe there's a posting of the entire thing somewhere.

Way above that altitude and orbiting so fast that it's unlikely that a wide angle lens with no tracking capabilities can observe with it's low light sensitivity, during daylight and close apperture lens. Go to an area with low light pollution at dawn or dusk, you will see a few in clear skies, moving quite fast.
The reason would be because the balloon only made it 18.7 miles. Most satellites are at about 200 miles and NOAA weather and photo sats are closer to 300-600. Military, science and spy sats can be in the thousands of miles. And before you ask...we can see them from the earth at night because we are looking at a reflection of light.
I've heard my dad tell me this story in the car BEFORE I even saw this video. And when I did, it was more magical than I expected.

The flight was 1 hour 38 minutes , if the earth was spinning at 1,000 mph it should have landed well over a thousand miles away at the minimum ?? thats common sense , however it appears it landed only 40 or 50 miles away ??

Polaris actually proves that earth is stationary and not wobbling on a 66.6 deg axis tilt.
If earth was orbiting the sun, whilst traveling through space at 420,000 mph, then Polaris could not be fixed above the north pole (center of earth) during time-lapse video. Nor could navigation from the stars be possible as constellations would change as the distances between them change with time. Fact is the constellations have been the same for thousands of years.
