Your easy going, friendly style reminds me of my grandfather.. he was an amazing cabinet builder by trade, but also anything else builder for fun.. he built our grandmother a whole new kitchen, made my sister and I captains beds, and a life size playhouse full of cabinets, furniture, windows and a Dutch door. I got mad respect for wood workers of all kinds. Your boxes are fab.. might need to see about getting someone to make me some. I love that they are lifted as well. Nice job. Just one tip, use galvanized brads. Only a couple dollars more and they will not rust out as fast. 18 ga. non-galvanized brads rust away completely in just few years. Keep up the good work.
Love your videos… appreciate the free plans also.just made 9 of the three picket boxes and they came out beautiful and can’t wait to get plants into them . ❤
Hey guys. I just finished building two small boxes and 1 large box. It was fun and they came out great. Really appreciate your video and the plans. Expecially I didn’t have too fig the materials lol. You did it all. Awesome.
Like your style. Your content, free plans, diagrams!, to the point content with just enough light-heartedness for fun and don't forget the nail counter. 👍 21, but I look forward to both. Keep up the good work
I have made this and I really like the slick design and free diagrams- I have used a pump up sprayer to add sealer to mine and have add a THICK 55gallon drum liner (trash bag) to the inside with the drilled holes through both this will keep the moisture in longer and will make the wood last longer- Again great video waiting on the promised 3 pcs trifecta planter group video!! keep up the great work!
We planted some tomatoe plants in the smaller boxes and I am adding a trash bag liner next year so the water can be absorbed in the soil. Water seal is a good touch so the cedar holds its color :) i like it
Cannot wait to get these started! Presents for my sister are also going to be included with these. Thank you very much, I've😃 really enjoyed the videos I've seen thus far. I'm so glad I stumbled on you today
This is perfect timing! I was just heading out to the garage to start work and pulled up your channel only to spot this new video. I have just enough pickets to do this so I’m going. To give it a shot! Thanks for being awesome and providing free plans.
Thank you so much! I made 2 already and will be making more! I made them taller and wider and was even able to do the 45 degree cuts. That's huge for me. Your explanation referenced "little triangles" and all of a sudden it made sense. Now maybe the vegetables will love the pretty home they'll have and grow for me.😅
Found this on accident a few weeks back. You made this look almost too easy but I decided to give it a try. Picked up 28 Pickets a week ago to make 4. Yesterday I had some time in the evening so I printed the cut list and cut all the pieces I would need, minus the trim. Took me between an hour and a half and two hours so not too bad. This morning my wife offered to put them together since I also had 2 other projects I was working on so I sent her a link to this video, set up a work space for her with some glue and a 18 gauge nail gun. Now my wife is one of the most intelligent people I've ever known, she was an Aircraft Mechanic in the Air Force after all but she very rarely does any wood working. I showed her how to load the nail gun when it ran out and let her go. I said you made this look almost too easy but it really was as easy as it looked. My wife had all 4 assembled in under 4 hours and all that was left for me to do was cut and attach the trim. So what's the verdict? The plans were perfect and the video was super simple to follow. Easy to put together? I thanked my wife for the help and she said, "All I did was put them together, you did the hard part." I don't agree who did the hard part but that should tell you how easy it was. How do they look? We intended to put two on each side of the driveway and they will look great there. The problem though is I put them on the deck after they were done and I really like them there. That means I'm making another trip to the big orange box store for another 28 pickets this week. Great job with this. I've definitely sub'd and will try a few more in the near future!
Just started making these. Holy cow they fly out the door. I'm probably not charging enough lol. Great video and thanks for the plans. Who's the Voss, you da Voss.
I made a couple of fence board planters a couple of years ago. Mine are about 2' x 4' x 30" and are constructed just like yours. These are three boards high for the box, and do hold a lot of dirt. This year the lower board on the long side started to move down on one end. I had to get some clamps to draw the board back into position and then glued and nailed some scrap board to the inside of the leg to support those long boards. Next time I build some, I'll add these additional supports from the get-go. Nice job on your video.
Big thanks! made one. Looking at the provided cut list, I originally wanted to make a shorter one but had difficulty determining which cuts to shorten. Found myself watching sections over and over again. Said screw it, build it to size. Looks fabulous.
I ran across your channel by accident...or was it destiny?? No matter, these plans are perfect!! Easy to follow and look beautiful in my backyard!!! 1,000 thank yous for providing me with the final pieces to my summer project!!!
Made a pair of these for my Mom for Mother's Day. They are beautiful! Quite sturdy as well. Very happy with how true they came out using cedar. I had to buy 1x4" and 1x2" cedar boards for the legs and top rails, respectively, because I don't have a table saw for ripping planks. I was a little heavy handed with the staples. Used twice as many as you per box. Thanks for the plans. Keep up the cool project videos!
I made 2 of your 3 picket planter box... I use Solidworks and I will try to create a 18 x 18 x 36 planter using your ideas. I need to supplement my income while having fun creating these planters... thank you for the motivation. I was asked if i could make a bird house for some mid sized parrots... hmmmm
Glad this video is getting people into their shops and creating :) bird houses are fun, theres one on my shelf I made. You can make goooood money building indoor birdhouses for peoples pet birds. Saw one on Etsy for over $1000. Geesh

I was going to do somethign crafty with the bottles (which were all goven to me from my friend) but havnt yet. We'll have to make a cool lamp or something soon!

I like it. I think I would recommend to your customers to line the interior of the box with something to protect the Cedar (white Cedar isn't all that resistant to rot) I'm going to build your design but will use some more advanced methods. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Chris, I have a few boxes from three years ago, no liner, and are still going strong :) but the liner will help the dirt absorb the water rather than it pouring out the cracks because the dirt has hardened :)
Thank you for the free plans. My long top trim pieces wound up being an inch longer than what is called for in the cut list, so I would recommend building the box first before cutting those particular pieces.
So close! Ive sold a few of the boxes with the cedar post, but those babies are cashy if you go with cedar instead of a treated 4x4. I have a friend that bought a few so she might be getting a freebie if I make another for RUclips ;)
Thank you very much for the plans. I added ax type handles to one side and wheels made from scrap, on the other end. I wish I could figure out how to add a pic.
Great video! You're making a 48" planter box, so why cut your boards to 44"? Is that to allow width for the leg boards and top piece so that the end result is 48"? Thanks! Love your videos!
That was the size my customer ordered, so I left the sizing the same :) its a 46" box, but yes, the legs, sides and top give you the total 46" length :)
This is great! Gonna try to make some once I can find cedar pickets in my area again. Found your channel through a FB Reel of your 3 picket planter, love your style man, keep it up!
Thanks for this video. I modified the size a little bit (2.5 feet x 1.5 feet) and they turned out great. Followed your instructions to the letter and it turned out perfect.
Great video and explanation- one question- your plans call for 4 pieces of 5 1/2 x45 inches, but your video showed them being cut at 44 inches- which one should be used?
Ooooooo nice catch! As long as all four of them are cut the same length, it wont be an issue. Only thing it might affect is the last board you rip down to put in the center :)
I pre cut everything according to the plans and had to trim the two supports for the bottom boards and the long, top trim pieces came out a tad short but good enough for my patio. Came back to watch the video again and that's where I noticed the discrepancy for the long side boards. No worries though, I really like how simple these plans are and how good the finished product looks. Of course the smell of cedar is always a plus.
Thanks buddy! The cordless is still a favorite, but, I was pumping out a lot of boxes and bought an air nailer. The cordless was also giving my arm a workout. Lol
Found the cuts to be a little off, 1 3/4 on the rips doesn’t allow for much landing of the sides and idk if I missed it but the top frame you might wanna indicate if the measurements are to the short or long point but nonetheless thank you for the build
Hey Aaron, I see you use the shop vac but what about a dust collector? I am tired of all cleanup but I also don’t want to burn up a shop vac. I’m a newbie to your channel.
Ive investigated a few dust collection systems. I still have yet to find the perfect one that is wall mountable. All my equiptment is against one wall so running the tubes wouldnt be a problem. I just havnt bit the bullet yet. Shop vac has been doing just fine though, it does get a little warm when i run it for 15+ minutes at a time :)
Hey Aaron, thanks for posting this! I’m officially down the rabbit hole, table saw, circular saw, pocket hole jig, router, not mad tho! Questions…using cheap cedar from HD, where should I start with sealing/paint esp for the legs/parts that touch the grass? And how bad are interior brad nails to use outdoors? My first iterations that I sold use them :/. Also just a tip, Matt P did this cool 45° rotation hack to make a pointy tip on end of beams. That being said 21!
Woohoo! Welcome to the never ending purchase of tools :)you could seal the bottom like 1 inch to protect against discoloration from water touching the feet. Ive made these boxes for two years and have had no issues with the brad nails not being galvanized. I did see Matt's cool 7° planter box, I did not catch this nifty 45 degree trick though! Might have to jump on his channel. Glad you liked the video buddy! :)
Weve had ours outside for two years (three winters) now, they will sun fade to grey if you dont spray them with UV protection, but they are still going strong
Love the videos. But one update needed. At 2.15 in the video, you cut your long sides at 44". The screen shot and the download shows 45". I cut mine 45" and it leaves the last board with the corners cut off at the top of the picket.
Follow the plans, and start by cutting the 45" side, then the two 12-3/4" pieces. You should have a little 2" cut off section of waste with the dog ears :)
Nice vid. When it starts, it looks like the first part of the vid does not play. So looking at the cutting guide, I'm not sure if these are 8 ft. pickets or 6 ft.? Considering making it, but don't want to make a mistake buying the material.
I absolutely love this. I had a good time making these. Would you ever consider doing something on a really small scale? Like for suculats that you could sell for like $10?

Thanks Chris, I have a few boxes from three years ago, no liner, and are still going strong :) but the liner will help the dirt absorb the water rather than it pouring out the cracks because the dirt has hardened :)
Thank you for the free plans. My long top trim pieces wound up being an inch longer than what is called for in the cut list, so I would recommend building the box first before cutting those particular pieces.
Yeahhhh, mine came out to 46-5/8" too. I need to get that switched
Aaron, I guessed 157, great video!! 21
So close! Ive sold a few of the boxes with the cedar post, but those babies are cashy if you go with cedar instead of a treated 4x4. I have a friend that bought a few so she might be getting a freebie if I make another for RUclips ;)
You really are a talented and incredibly smart carpenter. Keep on cutting!
Thanks Dennis :)
Thank you very much for the plans. I added ax type handles to one side and wheels made from scrap, on the other end. I wish I could figure out how to add a pic.
Yeahh, I wish it was an option on the ol RUclipss :/ sounds cool buddy!
I just sold 2 of the 16” square boxes and was looking for bigger options!
Good job! This box and the smaller box have the same 16" side so they can be sold as a set too :)
I just got done doing this project! Also, done the three picket planters yesterday. Thanks for the free plans!
Great job buddy :)
196 Nails
Miles off, One day i may get Lucky and be able to say Nailed it!!
Not a bad guess! You could always fire in a few extra to get to 196 ;)
This is great! Gonna try to make some once I can find cedar pickets in my area again. Found your channel through a FB Reel of your 3 picket planter, love your style man, keep it up!
Thanks buddy! Glad to have you in my youtube community
😅
I made the smaller boxes this week and now you have me motivated to make this one. Off to the lumber store. Thank you for the awesome content.
Thanks Todd :) glad this motivates people to get in their shops and making some projects :)
Thanks for this video. I modified the size a little bit (2.5 feet x 1.5 feet) and they turned out great. Followed your instructions to the letter and it turned out perfect.
Nice! Great work :)
Nice clean plans
Thanks :)
Very approachable. (Okay, throw away comment to help with the algorithm.)
Yeahh! Thanks for giving the algorithm a little lovin :)
Once again you have made a great video and planter, wondering what happened to the cordless nail gun?
Thanks buddy! The cordless is still a favorite, but, I was pumping out a lot of boxes and bought an air nailer. The cordless was also giving my arm a workout. Lol
Another great video, thank you for the plans
Thanks :)
Found the cuts to be a little off, 1 3/4 on the rips doesn’t allow for much landing of the sides and idk if I missed it but the top frame you might wanna indicate if the measurements are to the short or long point but nonetheless thank you for the build
Thanks buddy
Great job bro/ 21
Thanks buddy!! :)
I really appreciate your videos. Thank You for sharing these different projects and tips.😎🤠🤓
Thanks buddy! :)
I just listed these on Marketplace last night and already have 3 orders! Love it!
Heck yeah buddy!
@@WhosTheVoss make that 4 orders!
Thanks Aaron! I don’t have enough room for a wall mount. That’s a pipe dream for me, 😀
So this maybe a crazy question. Could you use a 23 gauge pin nail instead of a brad nail to nail the boxes together? Will it hold like the brad nails?
Ive never experimented with pin nails, they do intrigue me though :)
watched the video ,it was great however Liked it but go no plans. how do I get them
Click on "more" under the video and go to the discription, the plans are about half way down :)
Love your videos, man. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks buddy :)
How long would these planters realistically last outdoors?
They are 6' pickets :)
That’s an amazing video! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks :)
Are you using galvanized or stainless steel brad nails? If using galvanized nails, any issues with rust streaks over time? Great video!
Im using a simple steel brad nail, mine have been outside for two years (this is their second winter) and I haven't had any issues with rust streaks
Thanks for the video, been making smaller planter boxes. How much does this big one sell for.. if I may ask?
I sell my planters at $10 per picket it takes to build. This guy I sold for $90, it was my third requested box :)
I absolutely love this. I had a good time making these. Would you ever consider doing something on a really small scale? Like for suculats that you could sell for like $10?
THAT would be adorable. I made a 3" x 3" planter box for my 3 picket planter box, but it was for show purposes only, no plant :/
Thanks for the videos man they've been great.
Thanks buddy :)
I am not only DIY challenged but RUclips challenged. I can't find where or how to download the plans for any of your videos. Any help would be appreciated. Great videos, well worth trying.

When you are in the video (im on my mobile), click the "more" under the title to see the description, and click "more" again to see the full description to find them :)
Thank you for sharing this videos.
I have a question for this particular planter.
If the planter is 33 inches height, would you use the same thickness on the legs?
Check out my raised garden bed video, its this exact box, but has 32" legs and a bottom shelf :)
What type of nail gun are you using in this project. Thanks for sharing.
18 gauge brad nail, 1" nails :)
Excellent video, made the small planter's will try this big one next...gets me out of my wife's hair
There ya go! :) haha
