Can you show us ask how to switch hands which hands after you start off a braid explain like from over hand or under hand etc I braid under hand and have a hard transitioning from under to over to build speed
That’s exactly how I learned to braid!!!!!! The overhand fist method. I thought I was the only one!!! Every time someone has tried to show me how to do box braids or feed ins they thought my method was sooo weird. I couldn’t get the classic underhand for the life of me. So I sort of gave up! But now I’m determined to get it. I’m going in the garage to get my mannequin! Practice practice!
Wow...I'm the odd one then I learned underhand braiding...then 1 day many years later I got my fingers to go the other way 🤣 I started cornrowing like a mug after that 🤣🤣🤣...
I’m a self taught braider, i braid under hand, it’s the only way that feels comfortable for me, and the braids always look so neat & tucking is a breeze
When I was four my mom taught me overhanded and I braided overhand until I was 29 years old. I learned underhanded by a Senegalese person and it CHANGED my life. Although, I can braid very fast overhanded, I prefer underhanded because the braids are much neater and the stitching is very close and tight. No matter how much new growth there is, the braided portion NEVER looks old. Plus, my wrist and fingers doesn't hurt by braiding underhanded just takes a longer time. I start off overhanded then switch to underhanded. I can tell when someone braids overhanded, it looks sloppy and loose. I prefer my braids to look a certain way.
I’ve always been underhanded. I started doing hair at 5, started learning things like twist and braids at 6-9, started using fake hair at 10 and did my own hair at 12. I’m 13 and I’m JUST TODAY learning how to overhand braid and cornrow😭
I love underhand braids. Don't see that much anymore. Thank you. I am hoping your tutorial will help my great granddaughter to be able to do underhand braiding on me. Much appreciated.
I just tried the underhand method on my hair while you were explaining and succeeded! The overhanded fist was always my go to and the underhand method was always a STRUGGLE for me but now I got it!!!
I learned underhand and would love to know a quicker technique to get my speed up. I’ve braided my own hair and family members hair for years. I thought I absolutely hated braiding hair but something just hit me the other day and I have this urge to do it now.
See my overhand is completely different. I literally braid inward instead of outward. And I’ve been braiding like that since I taught myself as a child, including the overhand fist. And now that I want to start back braiding hair, it’s hard to get in the groove of braiding underhanded since I’m so used to overhanded braids, and especially since it’s faster, neater, and lasts longer than overhanded braids 🤦🏽♀️ I really gotta keep practicing at it. Thanks for the video.
Definitely the best video I've seen showing the actually difference between the overhand and underhand method. I'm so excited to start braiding using the underhand method now. Thank you thank you . You're a awesome teacher/ communicator.
Wow 😮, this is a whole new world to me , I recently had my hair braided for the first time ( menopause + recent heatwave hot weather + short fringe , I have always loved braids but have strong straight European hair , I needed to get my fringe away from my face and I’ve always loved the way braids look I love them ! I noticed that the lady braiding looked awkward ( to me anyway ) then when I started watching videos I discovered I braid completely backwards, so it’s me that looks awkward 😂, so imagine viewing your braiding method from underneath the braid , I pull a strand from the outside to the middle on alternate sides all the way down 🤷🏻♀️ I am left handed so I tend to work back to front anyway but of all the different techniques I’ve seen on videos , I still haven’t found anyone who braids like I do . I did my friends hair during lockdown , a few braids per day as it was my very first attempt and I broke my back years ago so need to rest regularly. Braiding is so time consuming but they look so beautiful when finished , thanks for the videos , really informative and well explained , I understood the methods despite having no real braiding experience whatsoever , Thankyou 😊
I am an overhand fist braider. Everyone always thinks that the way I braid is weird because they all braid underhand lol! I want to learn sooo bad but can’t get the hang of it.
@@shandrellrussell I’m about to be 32, I just learned how to knotless braid my own hair. You should definitely go back to braiding again you got this! I’m an overhand fist braider too. I feel like it makes me braid slower lol
Wow! I do all three when I braid. Never even thought about it until I watched this video. Great job on explaining and demonstrating. I've learned so much by watching your videos. Blessings to you and your family!
Same, although the overhand does slow me down. I definitely do the first when I'm about a quarter left of my braid. I learned to braid underhand which is one of the reasons my grip was so bad. My best friend showed me how to grip overhand. It took awhile for it to click in my head though. So I start out overhand, then switch to underhand until finally overhand fist at the end 😀
I just recently started braiding my own hair, never braided before in my life LOL. After hours of tears and breakdowns I picked up on the over & under hand after self teaching and some videos. Took 4-5 hours.
I have been learning so much from you. Your videos have helped me so much. I don't usually comment, I just want to say keep up the good work and thank you.
I braid inward as well, QueenSP! I learned overhand just to tuck blunt ends but my speed is definitely in inward hands down. I need to learn Vandy’s overhand method so I can start getting nails again😭❤️
Oh Lord, thank you for the detailed video, I didn't know the names of the different techniques, I've learned braiding with the underhand method, but can't practice overhand to save my life lol, now that I have an easy step by step method I'm gonna give it a try because overhand is way faster 😀
Omg! You just taught me to underhand the correct way! I used to roll the hair around my fingers instead of pinching 😩😩 this is so much easier and it’ll help with my speed
This is the video I’ve been looking for!!!!! I can’t underhand braid to save my life 😩😩 I will be watching this on repeat until I get it! Now just got to figure out the stitch thing and maybe ideas for styles and parting.
Thank you so much for your videos I think because you’re showing us with only the pink hair on how to do the actual single parade. We can actually get the concept. I love this idea of hundreds of videos that I’ve watched after watching this. I feel like I could probably learn to braid one out of the three at least lol.

I had the opposite issue of not knowing how to braid overhand. I also braid in the opposite direction as most people. This is so interesting. Glad I could finally see the difference
Growing up I only learned to braid one way that was the overhand fist. I never learned to braid underhand. I just started doing my boyfriend box braids in his hair. For some reason when I use my technique the braids would stick out. So I decided to learn the underhand method. When I first found this video I tried and gave up on 5 min thought I could never do it. Then I came back another time because I was so eager to learn and learned This method in 10 minutes. This video has the best detailed way to learn. Thank you !!!
OMG this is a life saver! I generally do the under hand method all the way through the braid and find that my thumbs become numb after a while.. but recently I've been seeing the 2nd method ALOT and it seems to be faster and would probably relieve some pressure if I rotate them but could never find a video with the break down on how to do it!!!! Omg! Thank you so much for posting this video I never knew the name for underhanded method and I’ve been trying for years to figure it out 😫! I can’t thank you enough sis🙌🏾 as soon as I seen your video I got my braid hair and practiced right away!
The overhand method is good for when you're towards the end of the braid and you already done tucked all the natural hair and you can kind of speed through the rest
I was told my braids were all underhand and that's why the tops of my braids looked a little different than other people's. I didn't understand the difference between that and overhand until just now thank you!
I taught myself under hand but I'm trying to learn over hand! It's so difficult like you said to retrain my brain but I'm gonna keep practicing! 😊 thank you for the tutorial!
I’ve been practicing once I figured out how I initially learned to braid was the fist method. But after watching tons of videos it appears that all three braid styles are underhand braiding but using different hand positions. So underhand braiding is when we take the outer strands left and right and go under the middle strand. So left strand under the middle then right strand under the middle and repeat. Overhand braiding is when we take the outer strands left and right and go over the middle strand. I found the underhand braiding with different hand positions in cornrows for beginners by glamfam. No offense to this video. I think it’s awesome and has helped me tremendously. As with all your videos Vandy! 😊🥰😊I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks sis for this video my lil girl is learning how to braid and she is a over handed braider were I'm a ride or die underhanded braider so now she can see up close the different ways. It's always harder coming from the parent. Lol 😆
I think underhand braiding comes out neater and it lays flat vs overhand. I braid overhand and I’ve been trying for years to learn underhand but my hand coordination isn’t right
It does that's why I only overhand with cornrows or starting off a plait. Next time you plait don't start unless you wrist and palms are facing you, then use your two pointers to keep tuck the sides under if that make sense. If you flip your wrist, palms towards you and try to braid, you should be able to do it. The weave tangles too much with overhanded and if not careful, it's lumpy/not consistent.
The first method is closest to what I learned as a kid, except that I tend to hook the middle strand with my middle or ring finger instead of pinching with my thumb and index. I'm guessing this is what I learned because I was only taught overhand braids-as in the type of braid, not the overhand method. It's also impossible to pinch thick chunks of hair, which is what I'm almost always working with. Since my hair is straight, the looser tension isn't an issue. However, my hair is also very long and as you said, this method leads to tangles with long strands. It drives me nuts. That's why I'm here, to learn a more effective method for when I get down to the lower half of my braid and can start pinching the strands. I've always found the underhand method mesmerizing to watch. So thank you for this tutorial... I know I'm not the target audience, but it's incredibly helpful regardless!

I’m an overhand fist and it is hard to break the habit but Lawd it cramps my fingers. I watched your video and can underhand and got it pretty much first try and it went way quicker but for the life of me I cannot get overhand!
I’ve always been underhand and struggle so bad with over hand on ends. I start out over hand at the root and switch to under after like 4 rotation down 😅
I learned how to braid wen I was 9 I don't think nobody could have taught me how to braid cause I wouldn't be able to learn by watching I had to do it myself..I taught myself to braid..I braid over & under..now I have to learn the video RUclips thing.you did great explaining
I am team underhand, but I'm also a lefty. I can't get overhand to save my life!!! I want to learn it for increased speed. This video is Bible right now! Practice, practice, practice! We talking about PRACTICE!
Not to be that person but I’m definitely an overhand braided YET all these methods are technically underhand. 🥶 I only say that bc I really be hoping I’m finding overhand videos bc it’s more rare for braiders to braid that way. I think a lot of folks use the terms interchangeably but like overhand braiders braid inside (so like goddess braids or inverted braids) bc the hands/fingers/hair are overlapping inside or on top of each other. But all the methods you showed are underhand bc the hands /fingers/hair are going underneath each other.
I’ve started braiding again and the hardest part to me is the parting . I think my lines are straight but once the style is done. It’s all messed up. But I’m underhanded

Thank you vandy your video has been so helpful to me and my business, still learning the overhand as I was taught with underarm many years ago but you are doing a great job teaching us. Thank you💞💞💞 from Nigeria
I can’t seem to get the 2nd method. I use the 1st and 2nd method all the time. Thanks for this tutorial I am going to watch it over and over until I get it
Your videos are so amazingly helpful! I’m so happy I subscribed to your channel! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge ❤️
How do you go from over to under in one braid? And also how do you feed-in in underhand braid?😍
I’m an overhand fist and it is hard to break the habit but Lawd it cramps my fingers. I watched your video and can underhand and got it pretty much first try and it went way quicker but for the life of me I cannot get overhand!
Thank u so much for this omg
I’ve always been an underhanded braider the over hand is the most difficult method ever 😫😂
I learnt braiding with the underhand. I believe a lot of Africans braid underhand.
Team underhand it's very easy and good when braiding super short hair.
Underhand is the simplest method for me. I have the natural ability for braids and twists. I started braiding as early as 7-8 years old
Thanks for this! What kind of hair is this & the color?
I’ve always been underhand and struggle so bad with over hand on ends. I start out over hand at the root and switch to under after like 4 rotation down 😅
I learned how to braid wen I was 9 I don't think nobody could have taught me how to braid cause I wouldn't be able to learn by watching I had to do it myself..I taught myself to braid..I braid over & under..now I have to learn the video RUclips thing.you did great explaining
Muchas gracias y muchas bendiciones 🙏🙏🙏 por enceñar a los demás eres especial. Saludos desde GRECIA.🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋💋🇩🇴🇬🇷
This exactly why I didn’t understand other videos cause I wanna braid overhanded wowww !! I understand now ! Can you do cornrows like this too ?
Are you a Sagittarius lol we learn the same
My hands really just do what they want i notice that i start my braids under hand and then if i have to add hair my hand start braiding over hand
I can only make one side look decent. I don't know what I am doing wrong 😕I'm going to learn if it kills me!
Thanks!
I’ve started braiding again and the hardest part to me is the parting . I think my lines are straight but once the style is done. It’s all messed up. But I’m underhanded
Hmm.......I literally use all 3 every time I do hair lol
Same it’s so natural for me
I have this hair I love love it...
I used to overhand braid but someone taught me to under braid. Now I have unlearned the overhand lol
Overhand and underhand methods work best for me
