Manufactured by Douglas Aircraft, Long Beach as A-26B-50.
Construction Number 27592. Manufacture date: April 09, 1945
MILITARY HISTORY
1945-50- Initially delivered to Hunter AAF, Savannah, Georgia then to storage at McClellan AAF, Sacramento, California.
1951 - To Douglas Aircraft, Long Beach to receive latest factory mods/upgrades.
- To Hill AFB, Ogden, Utah for further modification prior to being deployed to Korea. Invader 313 converted to a glass nose "C" model. Both .50 cal turrets were removed along with the aft gunners periscope/hardware and replaced with a SHORAN receiver-transmitter and navigator's station hardware.
- Ferried to Miho, Japan June '51 to join 452nd Bomb Wing 730th (Long Beach) Bomb Squadron "Rebels." Tech. Sgt. Bill Dawson and Byron "Curly Davis were assigned as 313's crew chiefs and then based at Pusan East, (K-9) South Korea.
- 313 became the personal aircraft of the Squadron Commander and named "Sweet Eloise II" after his wife. Later was named "Junio" (Spanish for its June arrival) by Squadron Commander Nevling who had replaced the squadron's original Commander.
- December 27, 1951- Invader 313 took a direct 40 mm hit to its fully loaded bombay badly injuring 1st Lt. Raymond Koch (USAF #AO2065993) seated at the navigator's station- table in the aft compartment. Fire, hydraulic failure, partial control (cable) failure forced the crew to divert to K-46, the nearest AFB. 313 was later ferried to Miho, Japan for repairs. Returned to K-9 with a new black paint job to make the ship less visible.
1952 - February 1952- Invader 313 took a 40mm flak hit to its glass nose which destroyed its Norden bombsight and shattered the co-pilots canopy as well.
- The 452nd Bomb Wing timed out in 1952 and was decommissioned in May. Invader 313 was reassigned to the 17th Bomb Wing, 95th Bomb Squadron "Kicking Mules." It became the Squadron spare aircraft but nobody wanted to fly "The Magnet" due to its notorious reputation for attracting flak and bullets according to 1st Lt. Fox who flew his 50th and final mission in 313.
1953 - July 27, 1953, 313 flew a SHORAN mission over North Korea on this the last official day of the Korean conflict. Invader 313 had accumulated app. 1900 combat hours in two years.

I spent a year as a mechanic on a squadron of these at K9 in Korea leaving on the day the truce was signed in 1953. The plane I was assigned to was 687 which was also the "C" version with the glass nose. Brings back many great memories. Thanks for the great video. After the tour in Korea, I was assigned to George AFB in Victorville CA (now closed) where we had these birds fitted for target towing for the Army out of Barstow CA. AF got a lot of good use out of these airplanes.

Amazing video of the Douglas A-26 Invader I built a little 1/72nd. scale plastic model kit of this cool medium bomber when I was a kid and I've never seen it flying and WOW he put her right on the numbers and did a great three point landing 🛬😉🤠🇺🇲
My Father (Lawrence J Klein) flew the A-26 quite extensively. Here is his history for that time frame of his life: March 1952: Finished tour with the 53rd Troop Carrier Squadron and transferred to the 452nd. Bomb Group (L) A B-26 (Douglas) Night Intruder outfit at K-9 Airfield (Pusan East) Korea. On or about May 1952 the 452nd was deactivated and we were reactivated as the 17th Bomb Group (L)
*Note: The “Douglas B-26 Invader” was re-designated “A-26” in 1956. Not to be confused with the Martin B-26 Marauder, used extensively in World War 2)
March - September 1952: Flew 55 Night Intruder Missions. Awarded a couple of Air Medals and a D.F.C. (Distinguished Flying Cross)
September - December 1952: Temporary duty to Miho AB Japan. Flew B-26 maintenance test flights.
You just can't beat the richness of the sounds coming from twin radials.
Maybe just me, but the sound these engines make in flight.... so soothing... I can just close my eyes, listen to it, & imagine it in flight...
The sound of those radial engines might be the very last sound heard by enemies of this country.
I had a summer job in a small BC town, and they were flying water bombers off a bypassed strip of old highway. I went to watch as an A-26 conversion had its tank filled with fire retardant from a small plant at the far end. When the hose was disconnected, the engines revved and the props became glassy discs and the plane bucked against its brakes; then, go! It roared past just feet away, the noise shaking me from knees to neck! The power of a plane built for war was so evident! It flew off the runway, over the river, and down the valley, where it banked right and neatly laid a puff of pink atop a small column of smoke on a mountainside. Then it headed for the Kamloops airport. It was nothing short of awesome.

@@Crunch_dGH I can't speak for everywhere, but all I see today are choppers, modified crop dusters on floats (Air Tractors) and a scattering of Dash-8s and other current planes. Any surviving warbirds are probably in museums by now.
I had the privilege of flying as a passenger in a corporate version of the A-26 out of BUR back in the mid 50’s N1S The A-26 is still my favorite twin, love those R2800 engines
I was a firefighter for the Forest Service back in the day. We were on a fire up in the high country outside of Sisters , Oregon. I was with a squad of six on a high line ridge and one of these beauties came up the valley dropping fire retardant BELOW US! Totally wild. We were only a couple hundred feet away as it roared past us....what a blast!

If you ever heard the engine sound from single-engine A6F or P47 at the air shows you know how LOUD those P&W R-2800 18 cylinders are.
A-26 uses two of them!
One pilot said on a RUclips video “ I have a P-47 on each wing!”
Used in P-47s, F-6-Fs, F4Us, B-26 Marauders and later Martin and Convair twin engine airliners. Last application was in helicopters.

My late father was a pilot of this wonderful plane in the Korean War and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism. So was my Dad !! His had been redesignated the B-26 Invader by then. He flew from Guam into Korea…

Dad flew Night Invader missions in Korea during that conflict. He mentioned to another pilot once how weird it was to have the North Koreans shooting down at them from the hillsides at night as they were flying nape of the earth.
Planes of Fame Air Museum has a A26 that is a Korean War veteran. It was later used as a fire bomber and as a river sander in Alaska. They loaded the tank with a mixture of coal and sand and used it to control the ice breakup in the spring on the rivers. The coal would attract the heat to melt the ice. Sadly the aircraft in storage and not currently flying.

I used to watch them in Abbotsford when Conair operated them as tankers! They and the DC6s were wonderful to watch each spring when they trained for the summer. I wish I could go back to that time, I though they would always be around!
I love the A-36. A beautiful beast that lived decently long than many aircraft. Many variants but two names stand out: The A26 and B26. This is the B-26 variant as it has a glass nose rather than either 50 cals or 37mm cannons. One was proposed to even house a 75mm cannon but wasn't kept and relied on primarily 50 cals. Either 8 or 6 on the nose
That is one beautiful A/C. When they say you fly the A-26 down to a landing they aren't kidding. In the vid you can see the difference in it's landing profile. None of the gliding/floating there.
I some a couple being utilized as water bombers in the 1970"s in Thunderbay Ontario. They were an orange and white color
Most A/B 26's were flown until the wings fell off, usually over Vietnam.

Rich sound and great video. one of my favorite "METAL" soundtracks. i commented on a P47 video that the only sound better than P47 was A26.
P51, Spitfire, Hurricane and P38 also music to my ears. But to feel the pouding in your chest as this flys by.

Sounds like Nazis 'quaking', to me 😏!!! I live in a area, that has a strong, WWll history. On July 4th, a B-17G named "Yankee Lady", used to fly in. Then a WWll, fly in festival, every Labor Day. For the most part, it's the same planes every year!!! One B-17G, Flying Fortress named "NineONine", a B-24J, Liberator named "Witchcraft", sometimes a B-25, and other smaller warbirds like P-51's!!! You can actually fly in these, providing the $450, 30 minute flight, fare. This is at NAVAL AIR STATION WILDWOOD, in Cape May County, NJ!!! Not to mention, the Atlantic City air show "Thunder Over The Boardwalk", in late August 👍!!! Not to forget, Memorial Day's The "Millville Thunderbolts"(P-47's), at Millville, NJ.

Very cool footage. I used to see these all the time in the early 90’s flying out of Red Deer, Alberta owned by Air Spray Ltd. You’d see at least 6 of them taking off one after the other, sometimes more, just like they would have in World War Two. It was an amazing sight and sound which really made you able to imagine what it would have been like at the end of a runway at an airbase in South-East Asia in 1944. I think they owned a total of 20 or so in their fleet which I loved to watch before they sadly retired them in 1997 I believe it was. They replaced them with some CL-215 for a little while and now they’re working with an L188 Electra and a few other small aircraft. Wish I could go back in time for a day to watch them again. I’ll have to do some research some time to figure out where their airframes are at now.

I've always been curious, how do you actually get to the other side of the runway where you take these videos? Can you just park over there and then walk up the little hill? It seems like much better views than the FHCAM side.
Yeah, just as simple as that. Go like you're going to Historic Flight Foundation and park at the bottom of that little hill to the right of the Paine Field access road.
