I think the REAL beef with Ebony & Alberta is that Ebony holds resentment for her mom because they allude to the fact that Alberta was pimping out Ebony as a child to get money so she could support her drug habit. Watch the movie again, Kennie. You missed some stuff lol
Also it wasn't "I haven't beat the kids in 3 weeks" it was about her alcohol use. I saw it as she was arrested because of her alcohol use and that's why she was able to still have the kids. She wouldn't have kept the kids if she had been known to abuse them like that and then still after seeing suspicious bruises.
@@Pikapichuu bingo!! 🎯 I was like did Kennie miss Alberta sniff at Ebony’s breath in that scene? It was a dead giveaway that she was accusing her of drinking, not beating on the kids

Possession films are always commentary on addiction and abuse. The spirits are proven to be irrelevant because the abuse and experiences/effects are the same. Religion is a drug and often a scapegoat for abusers. The parallels are always present and people miss it every time (except with “talk to me” which basically had to spell it out for the audience)
As a person who is more agnostic a film, show or any media that combined all could be an interesting take. Like say a film about a dysfunctional family with issues of addiction, mental health and abuse and being haunted by a malevolent spirit could make for an interesting story
The Exorcist doesn’t really fit this imo though? The little girl (Reagan) doesn’t fit this archetype, and the mother is atheist. I do think a lot of other possession films do fit though! Just wouldn’t say “All”
My very first apartment in New Orleans was VERY haunted. I knew this because my very first night, my dog was just staring at nothing full blown growling, hairs up and everything. All I did was sit down and tell the ghost/spirit/apparition that I didn’t want any problems, I just wanted to finish college and get into medical school. I NEVER had a problem after that, and I felt like some things it would do was for my own protection. Like the time I received a knock on my door right before someone that was coming to my place unannounced showed up. I never felt unsafe, I actually felt the most safe in there. I still think about that apartment and that ghost(s) from time to time.
Supposedly, demons or "bad" spirits will try to bait you by acting like it's trying to protect you. Figured I say something. Could be a Casper though.. lol
As a white woman I struggle constantly to understand my peers' need to insert themselves and center themselves in other people's business. You could say no, Glen, you don't need this
It's completely non-existent in the actual story.. interracial couples are represented a LOT. I kinda would have liked it to stay true to the actual story. Because It feels like they didn't have enough from the actual true story to make a full movie, so they added the interracial family as a filler.
@@hibrica interracial families are fine, but the movie is based on a real life family who is not interracial, so having a white woman as the mother/grandmother is just kind of weird...

Im sure its been answered already, but when your child goes into foster care you basically cannot have any type of unsupervised contact with them. My husband was in foster care, eventually adopted by his sister, and he wasn’t even allowed to talk to his mom on the phone unsupervised until he aged out of the system. But then again it might differ from state to state.
I think it depends on the state, the county, and the case itself, whether or not substances are involved, etc. I’ve heard things vary wildly, from “I see mom every weekend” to “mom has a restraining order” to me getting a call from a dad to make sure it was noted on his daughter’s pickup list that her mother was not allowed to pick her up alone. If she came with the grandparents, OK, but they had to be the ones to sign the kid out. If mom showed up by herself, I was to immediately call both him and the police. This was all in the same state. So I think it really can vary.
I think in most cases you are correct. I worked ias an investigator for a long while and I definitely had to oversee visitations. But the allegations or reasons for removal have a lot to do with it. Let’s say children are removed cuz a home is filthy and kids have those bad roach bites, but it’s a poverty issue (neglect), not abuse, a vetted family member can be the monitor for the visit as long as they report back to child services. If it’s SA, for example, you need someone who is in investigations or social work to oversee all visits. Just using those as examples.
@@melaniemagolan2241yea I’m sure it’s different case by case. I’m not too versed in it, and I didn’t feel like writing a novel XD but either way I don’t think parents are really allowed to see their children within a couple hours of them being taken in by CPS.
Currently, in Florida at least (regulations vary by state), all visitations need to be supervised unless the parent has worked their case plan, is doing well, and is close to reunification. This is one of the few times I haven't had angry things to say to the tv in regards to getting foster situations way wrong, lol.
i found it really funny that christian were complaining about this movie and saying you need to pray before watching it because i thought the movie was obnoxiously preachy

As someone who grew up biracial around other biracials. I’ve never seen anyone’s white mom learn how to do black hair. It’s very rare. Watching her in that role was absolutely insane. My jaw was on the floor throughout the whole film. And the ending made me laugh at the screen I’m ngl it was so ridiculous. There were so many traumas left unaddressed for such a bold film opening…
my white mom sure didn’t learn 😭 i’ve seen some of the newer yt moms getting their babies’ hair together now so at least it will be less normalized for the littler kids, hopefully.
Right? I remember w. women posting tutorials on YT (usually bec. they adopted a Black child) but that was a new trend/new way of doing things I think. Most of them were elder Millenials.
I'm white (Polish) and hair is not that important in our culture. Just washing it and brushing it (sometimes throwing a few braids in) is the extent of what my mom did with us. But when I married an Iranian man and our kids had curly hair it was a no brainer that I needed some education on how to make them look the best they could. We went to a curly hair stylist when my daughter was 2 and got product/tools/routine guidance. That was in 2010 and it was not hard to find someone who had experience. I'm sorry your mom didn't take the time to learn about and care for your hair ❤
fun fact: as a biracial person my white DAD learned how to do my hair !! he learned how to braid it, comb it, style it, flat iron it properly, and do some pretty styles. he even helped my mom put box braids in my hair once ( my hair goes all the way down to my butt, so it took forever and we never did it again 😭) of course, my mom was a stay at home mom when i was young so shed do my hair during the week but you know, shout out to my dad for as a man, and as a WHITE man, learning how to do my biracial hair !!

As someone who faced parental abuse in a VERY similar way to the way this movie depicts, I will say this is something I find the movie did very well. Abusive parents aren't one-note. Most "bad" people in general still have "good" qualities to them and I like that the movie showed abusive parents are still very much human and not some ultra super villains. To me when they make abusive parents into super villains it invalidates the pain abused children went through. This was a person who was supposed to love me, protect me, support me, and they couldn't/didn't because of the way they themselves were brought up. They didn't just happen to pop out a few kids, go "oops I hate them" and start beating us. People are a lot more nuanced and it does survivors a disservice to pretend like this issue with black and white, no matter how much people hate humanizing bad people.
I watched The Deliverance with my mom and we both went into it having no idea what it was about. We're white and.. Alberta definitely came across as a caricature to us, to the point it was uncomfortable and distracting. When I found out the mom wasn't even white IRL.. SMH. ETA: I took away the same message from the ending, too, I literally thought to myself "did I just watch a Christian horror movie?"
omg I didn't realize until about 35 minutes in that when you described the house as having a "demon hole" you meant it LITERALLY and weren't just referring to the basement
There is a part where the not exorcist lady says "I don't need an exorcist because I have superfaith" or whatever and then her very next sentence is "Yea so the last family in that house i tried to help, woo! everybody died, heads chopped off it was cray but I gotchu dont worry." and then, fast forward to the end of the movie, she just loses to the demon IMMEDIATELY and is like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "ayyy my bad you got this right?"
Tha Apostle was the most ridiculous (& useless) character. I thought atleast the old families spirit would come & help with the exorcism. They did throw every other horror cliche in.
I also did not like The Visit. It not only had some pretty flimsy logic to make the plot happen, but even when it came out I was already so sick of the "the plot twist is they're mental patients and that's scary!" trope.
M Night constantly uses mentally ill and elderly people as his villains; it’s one of the main reasons I can’t stand him. He made a few good movies and then had a stroke or something, bc everything since has been so awful.
Honestly he could have just said the old couple was just an evil couple that liked scaring kids or something than using mental illness as a reason to be 'evil'😅
Having already seen this: I didn't realize how much was technically abuse and how much was literally abuse. It's crazy to see someone who didn't grow up with the "CPS is bad and dangerous don't trust them" looking at this. It seemed so normal and Kennie is like "Yeah this shit is abuse". Like my dad would pop at me all the time but he would give me gifts after so like I thought it was normal.

Yea confusion is an aspect of abuse as well. Parents that curse their kids out, berate them and/or beat them then next second they are nice to you are repulsively horrid. They play with their children's emotions; they cause their kid to have very quickly altering emotions by hating their abuser one second then liking them the next and utterly distorting their image of what is happening to them and how they should view their abuser. It's very sad, and its saddening that your father perpetrated such on you.
14:17, Ebony was referencing her “drinking” problem, not abuse towards her kids. In the scene with everyone eating at the table, Alberta sniffs Ebony’s breath when she hits Dre in the mouth. And she says she hasn’t done it in a while. Lol. You misinterpreted that scene because you probably missed Glenn Close doing a quick whiff of her breath
Honestly after watching the movie, I was just very confused why people on tik tok were making it seem like this was a portal to demons😭 bc this movie gives “just have faith in God and you’ll be alright😀” but yeah, this was another movie that had great actors but not so great writing. And now that you mention it, some parts are deeply offensive 😬
Bruh so why did my mama tell me and my sister something similar when we were trying to talk to her about our childhood. Her exact response to we were hungry “ I bought y’all a happy meal every first of the month!” 👀
Andra Day started as a singer and made it big with the song "Rise up". She also played Billie Holiday in the Mini Series about Billie Holiday VS America
Honestly, I think the best family drama/horror combination is the Haunting of Hill House TV show. I think it's genuinely some of the best horror out there.
Yes!!! It's one of my favorite pieces of horror. Mike Flanagan does a great job connecting horror to the more mundane, but no less traumatizing aspects of life. Midnight Mass, Huanting of Bly Manor (this one made me cry) and most recently the Fall Of The House Of Usher. All very good, the Hill House is still my favorite.
See, this is why I love your videos. My mom and aunt told me to watch this and I really didn’t want to. Now I can watch your video and pretend I did. Thank you for your service! 😂
i was so confused about shante seeing a gyno in the hospital. It made me think maybe it wasn't just her having a period in band class, like maybe there was a cut scene where something happened that was deemed too dark for the final cut.
There is a movie coming out called ‘Don’t let go’ and I’m both excited for it and nervous. Cause it looks really good from the trailers but it would be so easy to ruin.
Yes the new Halle Berry film. I wanna see it but something is telling me she is gonna overact and butcher whatever southern accent theyre making her put on. We shall see!
Lee said "Every Black person knows an Alberta. She's part of the fabric of our community, but we've never seen her on screen before." I've followed TS Madison for so long and she is the reason Monique and Lee Daniels made up. She went to the premiere and talked about the film on a live, so I looked forward to a particular part/line. It just didn't hit the way she told it though. She expressed it in a far more lively way that made the actual delivery just not great. I also did not care for the "Christ saved us" ending. So basic. Andra Day is a hell of an actress though and Monique was great as usual.
That’s basically his rationale for the show Star as well. I can never quite figure out why he’s so obsessed with portraying the white women that are primarily in Black spaces. I also feel like they are on our screens often.

Even though religious elements usually do play a part in horror films with the whole demonic possession storyline the way it was done in this movie felt so weird and very 'call on jesus', especially the part where she randomly breaks out into speaking tongues and the scene where she just starts screaming jesuuuuuuuuus 😭
For me this was definitely a Christian horror movie rather than a horror movie about possession that happens to have Christian elements like you can clearly see there was more importance put on about getting saved and delivered rather than the actual horror element
watched this with my bestie and daughter (all of are Asian). the way we went "woooooow" when she made that "fry that shit up with some soy sauce" 😑. i think those pink scrubs were her mommas. I remember her mom wearing them during the "whats wrong with my kids?!" scene. Also, the actress is singer Andra Day that sings "Rise Up". We call ot the 'Got Talent' song 😂.
Glenn Close's character wore the scrubs earlier in the movie and eluded to going to work. I'm assuming the mom took the scrubs from her character after she died?
This happened in my hometown of Gary, Indiana. I was with a friend (she was driving) and I vaguely remember seeing that house before it was torn down. It gave off bad energy.
I wouldn't give Lee Daniels too much credit on Precious because that's based on a book called Push by sapphire, and the book is pretty much like the movie to be honest Eve's Bayou is one of my favorite black dramas.
When you started describing the movie, my first thought was this could have easily been a black perspective on an almost babadook-esque movie. I feel it could work because I've known many Christians who lacked real accountability for their actions with the excuse of the devil, demons, gods will, etc. It would also make the poorly implemented "facing her own demons" concept a lot more because she is the demon. She is the cause of her pain misery and what her children are going through. Also, a good black focused movie that i really like and without fail always makes me teary-eyed when i watch it is "the secret life of bees."
0:30 I was ganna say your look matches the dark movie vibes! Stunning! Gorgeous! I’m excited for dark makeup this season. I’ve been all light and sunshine since winter lol
I think the part where Ebony says it hasn't happened in awhile is in reference to her drinking problem. Did not finish this movie so I'm glad you did 😂 Anyway, you should do a review on The Reading.
From reading the comments, it seems like she missed a few things. While it definitely makes the story make a bit more sense I think the analysis would still be the same regardless if that makes sense.
Highly recommend the movie "Polite Society" by Nida Manzoor. It's so fun and made by a British-Pakistani woman about a British-Pakistani sister duo. If you like the trailer, I think you'll like the movie.
I'm the only person I know in my social circle who has even heard of this film and watched it. It's a shame too because I think it brought something unique to cinema.
PLEASE REVIEW "BAPS". It's a silly Black comedy from the 90s with Halle Berry. Kid me remembers it as hilarious, but I don't know how it holds up. I've been wanting to ask you for it forever. Good or bad, it'll be a great palate cleanser from this grim s**t 😅😅😅

6:46 you should really see _Precious._ Monique really delivers that role as the mother. It's a good movie as it casts a light on what really happens in our society along with those government programs that are meant to help individuals get on their feet.
Monique won an Oscar for her role in Precious cuz nobody believed our Nikki Parker could play that monster of a mother Precious had. Not worth the trauma to watch
So not important bc the movie was a ride, but she doesn’t buy the scrubs, we see her mom wear them a few times, so I think we were to connect that she went home and got her moms scrubs to sneak in, same pink color and everything

I really enjoyed Nope, Lovecraft Country and They Cloned Tyrone, and I am enjoying how Black sci-fi is slowly building itself a genre.
Ooh yes! I agree with all of those choices. They Cloned Tyrone is a MUST SEE. I'd suggest Def By Temptation as well. This is a CLASSIC Black horror story. ❤

Ok but the "it hasn't happened in a few weeks" is soooo realistic. My abusive former partner used to be like "but I haven't yelled at you or wrecklessly driven the car in a month!!" Abusive people "can't remember" but they love to backtrack and say whatever they did hasn't happened in "a long time" when it shouldn't even be happening one time.
6:49 You're not missing much by not watching Precious. It's hella triggering and traumatizing and it's not necessary to see it for entertainment purposes if you haven't seen it by now.
Honestly! I got through the first 10 minutes and was like, I'm good. I watched the last 10 just to find out what happened in the end, and i still shudder thinking about it
I went to see it on a date. We lasted 5 minutes and went to go see new moon instead.

The plot summary of Precious was traumatic. I have never had the guts to watch it.
Wasn't there one that was about dementia? I think it was called the last exorcist or something like that
The Exorcist doesn’t really fit this imo though?

As a white woman I struggle constantly to understand my peers' need to insert themselves and center themselves in other people's business. You could say no, Glen, you don't need this
Why? Interracial families aren't a myth and if a movie wants to represent that why shouldn't they?
It's completely non-existent in the actual story.. interracial couples are represented a LOT. I kinda would have liked it to stay true to the actual story. Because It feels like they didn't have enough from the actual true story to make a full movie, so they added the interracial family as a filler.
@@hibrica interracial families are fine, but the movie is based on a real life family who is not interracial, so having a white woman as the mother/grandmother is just kind of weird...
@@valeriarossini543 yes I see, I forgot about that. But someone above said that maybe they didn’t have enough content from the actual events so they improvised ( which is not a big deal imo). I am actually the opposite, lol. I thought today was sat until I read this comment 😂

The way it took this long doesnt bode well for Lee Daniels!

I'm sorry your mom didn't take the time to learn about and care for your hair ❤
fun fact: as a biracial person my white DAD learned how to do my hair !! he learned how to braid it, comb it, style it, flat iron it properly, and do some pretty styles. he even helped my mom put box braids in my hair once ( my hair goes all the way down to my butt, so it took forever and we never did it again 😭)
of course, my mom was a stay at home mom when i was young so shed do my hair during the week but you know, shout out to my dad for as a man, and as a WHITE man, learning how to do my biracial hair !!
if you date outside of ur race and you don’t learn the hair culture of that race, you are ignorant and don’t need to procreate. That’s just my take on it
White mom wasn’t really needed but seeing Glen close play that character was entertaining
Glenn Close is talented yet when Kennie said Lee Daniels probably misquoted, I STRONGLY doubt it. 😏
Agreed. She reminds me of a home health aid I had. Who also oddly enough is super religious now.

People are a lot more nuanced and it does survivors a disservice to pretend like this issue with black and white, no matter how much people hate humanizing bad people.
hair and makeup is giving what this movie didn't ❤🔥
☝🏽
While better than The Deliverance, The Visit made me want to throw my laptop and shake an angry fist at M. Night. Again.
I really can’t stand Lee Daniels …
Giving gifts after sounds like textbook "honeymoon phase" style behaviors

All those are great! Midnight mass is a great religious horror too
Yes!!! It's one of my favorite pieces of horror. Mike Flanagan does a great job connecting horror to the more mundane, but no less traumatizing aspects of life. Midnight Mass, Huanting of Bly Manor (this one made me cry) and most recently the Fall Of The House Of Usher. All very good, the Hill House is still my favorite.

i was so confused about shante seeing a gyno in the hospital. It made me think maybe it wasn't just her having a period in band class, like maybe there was a cut scene where something happened that was deemed too dark for the final cut.

Lee Daniels is what you get when you try to be Tyler Perry so hard that you even fail at Tyler Perry movie
Stereotype ""expectations"
I feel like Lee goes out of his way to pander to white people. It’s annoying.

I wouldn't give Lee Daniels too much credit on Precious because that's based on a book called Push by sapphire, and the book is pretty much like the movie to be honest
Eve's Bayou is one of my favorite black dramas.
That lip color is KILLER on you! Glad you already knew 💕
I figured Alberta was antagonistic towards Cynthia from CPS, because she was once in her daughters shoes and probably had CPS visits of her own

I think the part where Ebony says it hasn't happened in awhile is in reference to her drinking problem. Did not finish this movie so I'm glad you did 😂
Anyway, you should do a review on The Reading.
You are correct. It was about drinking because Glenn Close sniffed her breath 🙌🏽
From reading the comments, it seems like she missed a few things. While it definitely makes the story make a bit more sense I think the analysis would still be the same regardless if that makes sense.
