Can't believe I found this video. I took basic training out of A-3-1 back in 1959. I can remember running from the barracks all the way down to the M-1 rifle ranges. When we got close to the old air field, we would go around the back and what seemed like knee deep sand, then under the tunnel that ran across the highway. Would always stop running just before getting to a hill that was near the last range, then start running up the hill. It was just a small hill, but it seemed like Mount Everest.
I spent two months (April and May of 1966) in this barracks, first floor and to the left of the front with the Mess Hall to our left. Always spotless and shining in those days! Such a shame how vandalism was let loose on this post.
A-3-1 june-aug 1972. Spent my first weekend in the barracks watching a paint brush dry on the step railings. That tree out front was a scrub bush at the time. Sad to see someplace that used to shine in such disrepair. I've also seen where I did AIT and there were weeds growing up through the asphalt where we held formation and did PT. Nostalgia is a bitch, makes me feel old :) Thanks for the video!
Visiting places from our youth is always fascinating to share with others. Particularly when it’s relatively historic like those times from one’s military service days. Thanks for sharing your adventure. And thanks for your service in the Army at Fort Ord. 🇺🇸
I had my boots camp ( basic training at Fort Ord (A-3-1 ) 1966. For sure due to the meningitis problem, we were not allowed to have any contact with the other groups. When we getting a hair cut, we had to go with our group. I remember that was a monkey gar next to the mess hall. Every time we went to eat at the mess hall, we had to go thru. the money bar before we could enter the mess hall door to dine! What a memories!!!! At that time I was enlisted on using the name as Kwong You Louie. But now my name have been change to as Mickey Kwok. Beautiful video! Thank you so much, Alan!!!
I was at that same corner barracks in the summer of 1969 next to the PT field , but it was B-2-1 when i was there . Yeah , I remember the monkey bars well . That and the two low crawl trenches before it . We would do both before every meal . If I recall , it was also right next to the road that led to other training areas including the bivouac area about 14 miles away .
Flashback, remembering line into the mess hall, stairs to 2nd floor, no rooms, all open with double decked bunks, chasing down the candy truck on Sundays, running around the barracks with M1 above our heads, chanting the gun is fun the weapon is for???? Oct 1968.
Howzit Brad . This was my barracks in August until late November in 1969 . Was B-2-1 at that time . Yup this barracks . Across the street was the sandy P.T. area . Also ran into Robert B. somewhere behind the barracks . We were learning to disassemble our M-14 rifles when he and others saw us . Fo realz !
I did this very same thing in 1993, I believe. I visualized the troops running through here in the mornings singing cadence in 1969. I was here for basic '69, then with 7th Med 80, then Headquaters Arty '84 but all in the same general area and barracks. I cherish memories of my time here. We were in the old barracks up the hill from the Donut Hole and across the street from the bowling alley.
H-1-3 May-July 72 1st Platoon, 3rd squad. Lived on 2nd floor. Headquarters Co cleaned Battalion Headquarters in addition to our barracks. Got a wicked virus and spent 3 days in Silas B Hays Hospital over 4th July. Co. Commander was Captain Coonz. Training NCO Sgt Hood. Like you Alan, we had huge open bays with a whole platoon 30+ men in each bay. When the whistle blew we had about minute??? to be on our number in the street.
You should see it now. Probably 6 years after this video, a ton of the old barracks are gone now (near the top where the old hospital is located). The newer barracks are also gone (the ones alone 2nd Ave). They kept a few of the old barracks near the bottom (away from the old hospital) for the University. There were a bunch of the old wooden WWII barracks/buidlings near Imjin Pkwy that are now totally gone. The old wooden barracks/buildings between 2nd Ave and Hwy 1 are still there. A lot has changed even since you were there in 2012.
Brings back memories . I was with B-2-1 and our barracks was the very corner of the group that was nearest the p.t. and parade grounds . I can still remember the voices of the company commander , Cpt . Christensen , and our D.I. Sgt . Bennett . This was in September to October of 1969 .
why is it i am angry at the condition of fort ord, even .when it closed the ww2 barracks were used for offices and company areas cold war era barracks built in 50s on infantry hill made out of concrete were in good condition the vandalism pisses me off they should never have closed this beautiful place that i once called home.
I was also in A-5-1 9 years later in 1969. Never ran across anyone else from my company though and I stayed in 20 and a half years. A lot of them were draftees though
also i revisited ft ord sept 2014, im from akron ohio it was nice to go to px and it was still in operation for local retired veterans and presidio people
I was assigned at Fort Ord back in 1978 on Infantry Hill. Given the value of this land, it pisses me off to see it abandoned when the Army could have relocated the language school from Presidio to Ord. But no. They paid $$$$$$ buying private land just to expand Presidio. I wonder who got bribed to sign that deal?
Vandals Pisses me off too. I was here in 1971 when racism was so bad, and it's not any better. A black soldier murdered a white soldier in the snack shop in the old barrack section where I did AIT. I was Co. A-1-4 January to April 1971. The black man had attacked me, but I got away from him and left rather than risk possible trouble. A minute later he attacked and murdered a white soldier minding his own business. The black guy went in there to kill a white man, but I don't know why other than he was a racist that was going to kill the white man rather than fight his war.
Hey Alan .That was my barracks back in September of 1969 . At that time , it was B-2-1 commanded by a Capt . Christenson . The P.T. area was across 7th Avenue . Do you have more information or confirm the location of the P.T. area ? Thanks.
I was there for my boot in 1960, but in company A-5-1. I remember how the heaters would make one hell of a racket when they came on in the morning. However, we got used to the noise and were eventually able to sleep through it. Boot camp wasn't bad and the only real asshole I crossed paths with there was our company's First Sergeant---------- whose name I shall not mention.
Was it the barracks in this video ? I could swear the corner barracks was where I stayed for basic training . B-2-1 with a Capt . Christianson in command .
Tom Cartwright Tom My name is John boudreaux,1may 75 till 1july.B-6-3 then on to A34 in the front of post where I had my AIT. Tom Cartwright First I was assigned to A battery 2nd of the 75th. Only there a couple months, Hanau Fliegerhorst Kaserne. Then transferred to Mc Nair Kaserne, and stayed there for about 30 months then Back to the states for another 3 yrs in the Reserves Then ETS ed in ft Jackson S Carolina in 1981.... I was in a good unit at first, then to THE ZOO They called it. I drove a deuce and a half for a while, getting the food for 2 mess halls, and boy that was cold.......
John Boudreaux I was in A-1-2 1971 August then I to was in Germany after a short stay in Vietnam. I was a Huey crew chief at the old “Flying horse “in Germany. I hear it to has been shut down.
There is no way that they would allow this prime real estate to become anything beyond what dollar signs dictated. I laughed when some people said they could help the homeless with the residential areas at Fort Ord. It's easy to become cynical when big business and government is just as cynical.

Mine too.. B. Co 79th FSB. We were 9th Regt support
Remembering the low crawls we did outside of the dining room and going around the corner for the ladder bars before entering the mess hall .

I went to basic in 75 on 6th Ave. The barracks was wide open back then

They always say that people and union are the force, but when it came to Fort ORD, looks as if everyone looked the other way. Sad!
b-1-1, 1966.......

A-2-2 1972
Too bad a lot of these older buildings couldn't of been used as homeless shelters or housing for homeless vets.
Most of them are already torn down. There are four of them at this end, a long swarth torn down, and then a few of them used by the university.
