Monster Hunter is super fun, I'm sure you'll fall in love with the franchise. Plus it's the opposite of what we are used with Bamco, a fully complete experience with an insane value*money (like the best in the industry probably) almost completly devoid of predatory practice. Enjoy the ride buddy
I remember playing monster hunter on the 3DS and having people come up asking if it’s a Dark Souls clone. So I’m super glad this series is getting love it deserves
This game is fkn godlike. It's great to see you pivot into it. Bonus points for running gunlance since there's a bit of growing pains early on with the skills needed to make it shine, but it's highly satisfying with multiple playstyles. The modding scene for this game is insane too. Peep nexusmods for some good sht. Wilds is finna consume lives when it drops. 😂
This game is truly amazing. It has thousands of hours of content. Even If you wanted to solely focus on this game until Wilds came out it would be difficult to get and see everything. You gotta try the charge blade. one of the coolest and most satisfying weapons to use if you manage to overcome the initial hurdle of understanding the mechanics.

Don't know if you ever got the answer to the lockon question, but most people (including me) use the other target lock option where you just tap L1 to recenter the target monster into your view and the rest is manual camera work by the player. You gotta go through your options and change the lock on style off the darksouls like constant tracking. Also change the setting to only lock on to big monsters. This should have been the default settings, but The MH team was trying to figure out how to get noobies into the game, but the default camera options suck.
Wait till Monster Hunter Wilds comes out. Man is that game gonna be amazing! I've got my leave ready to take a full 2 weeks from work just to play that game.
Rise and World are developed by two different dev teams, Rise is made by the Generation devs who specialize more in combat depth, while World is made by the mainline devs who went all in on immersion for World. Combat depth is still there in World, just not as much as Rise imo. Btw, charge blade is based.
