Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie (Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Wonka (Depp). Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers (Roy), he has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

As Charlie and his family's life improve, Wonka becomes despondent, causing his company and sales to decline. He eventually turns to him for advice, and he decides to help him reconcile with his estranged father, Wilbur. During the reunion, he notices newspaper clippings of his success which he collected, while he realizes the value of family as they finally reconcile. Afterwards, he allows him and his family to move into the factory together.
