It's a good idea to keep your firewood outside until you want to burn it. When the wood is cold bugs are asleep. When the wood warms up they wake up and start exploring your house.

    • @troyyarbrough

I can verify that. We ended up with dozens of some kind of small beetle looking critters crawling out of some of our firewood once.

Yes, but put a tarp over it. I lived 100% off-grid for 4 months in Florida. I separated all wood into 3 piles based on size. It rained all the time but I was able to start a cooking fire whenever I wanted because it stayed dry!

It's a great option to spare some cash. I used my old small charcoal grill and started a fire to make cowboy coffee and cook food. Sometimes I used charcoal.
I cheated though to light the wood by using charcoal fluid. ;)

Living off grid will really teach one the many advantages of a simple BASEMENT! A full concrete foundation with footings well below the frost line gives a non freezing enviroment for water pipes etc., at least in the basement. Almost a must for an off grid cabin, oddly enough. When I was installing off grid power system for others, a basement for the batteries was a given, lacking a basement, digging a hole in the ground to below the frost line and lining it with foam insulation at least assured the batteries a good home, same with any water storage tanks.

    • @sarahadkins6315

Out here you have to worry about radon in the mountain areas. So basement aren’t really used often in New Mexico. We do get super creative with pipe insulation

I added a Renogy Wanderer 30 amp no LCD solar controller to my lead acid system, and it's been excellent. No radio noise. The 100 watt system is always revealed by blinking colored LED lights. Use gel setting as its gentler than flooded, for my flooded battery. Everything is indoor and clean. The battery acid is diluted to 1/2 making a deep cycle 12.01 volt storage. This is perfect for a chest freezer on ECO, or lights, but a second 100 watt panel would help you with a fridge.

I follow a couple of boating channels and quite a few of the boats on them have about 1/2 your number of panels , and at least 4 to 6 batteries. This size of set up along with wind turbines, (on some) sustain 2 to 4 people on the open sea for weeks, with navigation, communication, and kitchens running. I just subscribed, so I haven't had much chance to research previous videos, so IDK if you have more batteries on the way or not. I've only watched 2 videos so far, but like what I see here. Thanks for the videos, you do a fine job !

Living in the Buffalo New York area we know a thing or two about snow and how to deal with it. I could easily handle a foot or two. What do they consider the winter months there? We usually get snow from November to April here. Sometimes even in May. It’s such a loooooong winter. We went to the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago and definitely felt the change in elevations. Have you gotten used to that?

To resolve your field mouse problems , Research YT for five gallon bucket traps. Bury buckets in areas then put fencing around bucket so you don't step in bucket. Spray Clear coat around bottom of metal shed mice and bugs cannot climb up because clear coat works like plexiglass. Also you can add liquid to bucket traps.

But, sadly those viewers are ever present. Everywhere. The tiniest thing, it always comes out, with some. Like, in the grand scheme of things, why is it so important, I wonder, each and every time.
Tough going out there for you both, for sure. You simply can't plan each and every detail for the what if's in life, no matter how you try. As you are only too aware Nate. Mother Nature is not something to be trifled with and she's showing herself in many ways worldwide right now. We have had a lot of rain here, flooding, loss of life, as you have in the US. After all of your years in the Element, you have got very inventive at different times and have always come through. Some way, some how. As frustrating and tough as it has been at times. I hope that this too shall pass. Quickly! 😊. Much love from my Sprinter nomad life, in a very wet, getting chilly, New Zealand 🙃 🙂 👋🧭 🚐 🌧
